Good Grief
When someone we know and care
• Be a good listener. When suffering
about has lost a loved one, we may
spills over into words, you can do the
feel a bit clumsy with what to say or
one thing a bereaved person needs the
do. We may feel there is little we can
most, you can listen. Is she emotional?
do. Yet, there are things you can do.
Accept that. Does he cry? Accept
Simple things. There are words and
that. Is she angry with God? God
acts, which are truly helpful.
will manage without your defense.
Accept whatever feelings are expressed.
You may feel less than qualified to help,
Do not change the subject. Be as
or you may feel uncomfortable and
Amy L. Kitsembel, M.Ed.,
awkward. These feelings are normal,
Bereavement Coordinator
however do not let then keep you away.
Rest assured your caring is the most needed
quality to help. In fact, simple communication of the
feeling of caring is probably the most important and
helpful thing anyone can do. The following suggestions
will guide you in communicating that care.
•
understanding as you can be.
Keep in touch. Be available. Call,
write, visit, invite for coffee or dinner.
Later, when close family may be less
available, anyone’s visit and phone call
can be helpful.
• Get in touch. Call. Even if much time has passed,
it’s never too late to express your care and concern.
Remember together, laugh together, cry together.
Share your love.
• Your brief embrace, holding of the hand, a few
words of affection and feeling may be all that is
needed during your first visit or funeral visit.
• Avoid ‘clichés’ such as “ He is out of pain” “ you’re
lucky it was a brief illness”- these are not helpful. A
simple “I am sorry for your loss,” “I love you”, or
“not sure what to say- just know we are thinking of
you” are appropriate.
• Accept silence. If the mourner doesn’t feel like
talking, do not force conversation. Let the mourner
lead. Silence is better that aimless chatter. Allow the
‘working through’ of grief. Let people process grief
in their own time. You cannot determine the length
of another’s mourning.
“Too often we underestimate the power of
a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening
ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest
act of caring, all of which have the
potential to turn a life around.”
How a Fortune Cookie Can Heal Holiday Grief
Did you ever think a fortune cookie could offer a profound message that
offers comfort, happiness, and peace in a life that is stressed by grief?
Sometimes holiday festivities and commercialization reminds us of what
we are “missing” rather than the blessings we have. This holiday grief program
will offer a savory twist that can only be interpreted as inspiration and good fortune.
Come join us to discover “something good” in the unpredictability of receiving
gifts through random acts of kindness. We encourage you to bring a friend to
help you find your fortune. Rejuvenate an uncertain season of sadness with
a sense of hope and optimism.
