That year they were invited to perform together at Grahamstown National Arts Festival, South Africa’s biggest cultural festival which proved to be an experience that would influence their musical development and career. Among their most memorable performances were concerts in some of the city’s churches with their special acoustic qualities. Dlamini remembers an inspirational encounter at the festival with renowned South African ethnomusicologist Andrew Tracey who continues the work of his father Hugh Tracey, the founder of the International Library of African Music, an extensive collection of African music recordings and instruments from the 1940s to the present, situated at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. Back in Swaziland, after the amazing experience of performing at Grahamstown, the singers felt the need to break out of the small Swazi arts scene, so the invitation from Maputo provided a welcome opportunity to explore new musical territory. Once here, they soon hooked up with a bunch of like-minded musicians and not long after that Spirits Indigenous was born. Read more BACK TO INDEX 4
