What:
It’s obviously a lot easier to score well-paid festival gigs when people already know
your name, but for the relatively unknown artists, finding that first festival gig is close to
impossible. Or is it? Fortunately, the world is swarming with festivals and we have the
experts in the house to give you insight into how programmers and festival buyers pick their
A&R in A New World
What:
A&R used to be simple stuff. You’d get a CD demo (an obsolete medium), plug the artist
to your friends at the papers (remember them?), convince radio PDs to insert the song
(yes, they used to be able to do that) and ship the product to, um, record stores. So what’s
replaced all that in the A&R job description? This session examines how A&R is evolving
to operate within new music platforms - both on the discovery side and the delivery side.
In this day when less artists are being signed to major labels, it’s now more important than
ever to develop an artist brand and connection with the fans and industry via direct means
(before a label comes on board). The basics have not changed; however, it requires more
noise and momentum to trigger the interest of a label these days…find out what it takes to
discover and develop talent and market opportunity in today’s climate.
Moderator:
ARTISTS
Adrian Wilson & Beside Lights Pop Rock
Adrian Wilson & Beside Lights released their debut EP “A New
Direction” in 2010, quickly garnering acclaim for their razor sharp
hooks and brooding, insistent melodies. The stage inevitably
beckoned and as each show saw more and more emerging potential,
word of Adrian Wilson’s performances spread, and the big picture
became a little clearer. It was and is still the world beyond the horizon.
New people. New ears. Which leads us back to here and now...a place
and time where Adrian’s world has crossed paths with your own. A new
person, with new ears.
The first single from the EP “Hold On’ was due for release in February
‘11, remixed by legendary Producer Warne Livesey (Midnight Oil, The The, Matthew Good)
at his Command Centre Studio in Vancouver. The band is currently playing selected dates
before recording a new EP scheduled for release later this year.
Alanna Cherote Alt/Pop
Alanna Cherote comes from one of those large musical families
that are rare to find these days. She is the eldest of five children
and grew up surrounded by music. By the age of fourteen, Alanna
started writing her own songs and recorded her first solo EP at
sixteen.
A few years later, Lamar Lowder (co-founder of Australian industrial
band JERK) hooked up with Alanna in Sydney for some writing and
recording sessions. With Lowder’s hard-rock background and
Alanna’s softer songwriting style, the clash of musical tastes melded
together resulting in the pop song “Shakin’ Sweat” which was nominated at the MusicOz
Awards for Best Song of the Year in 2007.
In 2008 Alanna penned her EP, “Universal Need” on MGM in Australia. She independently
funded her own tour, performing in England, Holland, Germany, France, Spain, and Africa. At
each tour stop she won over new fans and received rave reviews.
2011 sees the release of her debut full-length album. PAPER FLOWER features 14 songs
influenced by contemporary artists such as Sheryl Crow, Bon Iver, Feist and Brandy Carlisle.
Co-produced with Chris Vallejo (Empire of the Sun/Katie Noonan), three Canadian songs
appear on this project including “All in Good Time” by Ron Sexsmith. The album will be
released through Sparks/EMI in Canada and in Australia/New Zealand on Other Tongues.
The intensely melodic collection of songs has attracted critical
acclaim with the Herald Sun raving that ‘Birds Of Tokyo haven’t
merely arrived. They’ve smashed the door down’. The band’s
Eli Wolfe Folk blues acoustic
After eight months, over 20,000 kms and touring across every
Australian state and territory in a van he painted with his own brightly
coloured artwork, Eli Wolfe looks forward to a very musical 2011. The
creative artist and troubadour recently wrapped up his impressive
‘Community Australia Tour’ with a showcase at the prestigious One
Movement for Music Festival in Perth.
Before heading off to share his unique sound abroad, the Matonendorsed
artist performed at The Rocks Australia Day - Festival of
the Voice on Sydney Harbour. He also featured at The Australian
Blues Music Festival in Goulburn, NSW and the Nannup Music
Festival in Western Australia.
Following his CMW showcase, Eli Wolfe will embark on an extended Canadian and European
tour. On the back of all these shows, Eli is now independently releasing his brand new, selftitled
debut album. With his poetic lyrics, 6 and 12-string guitars, and warm and colourful
sonic textures, Eli Wolfe creates a refreshing and original sound.
Eli says playing music and promoting his album has been about getting to know the country,
“You get to see the diversity of the people and the common thread that runs through us all…
It’s about connecting with people living on this great dynamic land, living strong.”
Hungry Kids of Hungary Indie Pop/Rock
Hungry Kids of Hungary have been unavoidable in the
strong string of radio hits like ‘Scattered Diamonds’, ‘Set It
Jack Carty Singer/ Songwriter/ Folk
Jack Carty is a rare find; an inspired artist possessing a way with
words and melody, Jack was sculpted by a unique upbringing
and a natural flair and dedication for his craft. After spending his
formative years tucked away in the secluded Bellinger Valley,
Jack moved to Sydney, releasing the ‘Wine & Consequence’
E.P to widespread critical acclaim around Australia, resulting in
the record spending two weeks in the iTunes singer/songwriter
Top 10 chart.
Extensive touring throughout Australia and the USA ensued,
along with the award for singer-songwriter of the year at
MusicOz 2010. Jack collaborated with Grammy Award winning
songwriter Dan Wilson and New York based indie producer extraordinaire Kramer Shimmy
on his debut album; the result is ‘One Thousand Origami Birds.’ A cohesive and timeless
effort based around tales of travel, struggle, hope, simplicity and love. It is at once intensely
personal and universal. Including the simple wandering of the albums opening title track, the
optimistic alt country swagger of ‘Valentina’, the hyper-drama of duet ‘Grey Sky’ and the quiet
prayer of the first single ‘Hope’ - this is a record as confident as it is pensive, as optimistic as it
is melancholy and as honest as it gets.
The Jezabels Indie Pop
Few bands have made more of the past 12 months than
Sydney quartet The Jezabels. Since releasing their second
EP, She’s So Hard, in November 2009, the four-piece have
toured the country supporting Tegan & Sara, Katie Noonan
and Josh Pyke, and as headliners in their own right (selling
out shows nationally in the process).
The third and final release in a trilogy of EPs that began
with 2009’s The Man Is Dead, its five songs represent the
band’s most confident outing to date – moody, mysterious and epic, yet buzzing with the
quartet’s ever-present knack for an irresistible pop hook. For the first time in The Jezabels’
career, they allowed the music to grow and evolve in the studio. “We had to put a lot of faith
in ourselves working together,” says Shannon.
An October’10 tour of America and Canada was followed by a headlining trek across Australia,
culminating with appearances on festivals such as Wave Rock Weekender, Peats Ridge and
the Falls Festivals. It’s a long way from The Jezabels’ humble beginnings in a Sydney University
band competition in 2007.
Kim Churchill Roots/Rock
Twenty year old guitarist, surfer and singer-songwriter Kim Churchill
picked up the guitar at the age of four, then trained classically for
ten years. At 16, he started to find his own musical feet under the
influences of Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Marley
and more recently Jack White. There’s no doubt this guy can play
guitar, but his music also pays tribute to the great songwriters that
have influenced him. Kim hit the road in a campervan straight after
finishing high school two years ago and hasn’t had a fixed address
for more than a week since. He’s now considered to be one of
Australia’s most exciting young guitarists.
From starting out in 2009 virtually unknown, Kim has now blown
apart some of Australia’s biggest festivals (Byron Bluesfest,
Woodford Folk Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival and many more),as
well as taking his show to Japan, Canada and the USA. He’s appeared on national primetime
TV, he won National Youth Folk Artist of the Year 2009, and now with agents in each corner
of the globe, he is booked for a host of international shows in 2011, including SxSW, plus tours
Mayfield Grunge/Rock/Punk
Mayfield are a three piece band from Australia. The band
began on a deserted beach in 2004 and simmered
beneath the surface for three years of writing, learning
and preparing. The philosophy and corner stone of
Mayfield is part grunge rejectionism, part hippie ideal,
part project mayhem but wholly its own.
In 2007 the band sold everything they owned apart their
instruments, flew to Europe, and toured for 5 months
supporting their self-titled EP. They began building the Mayfield family across the UK, France,
Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Austria.
In 2008 Mayfield recorded in LA and toured the US for 6 months, followed by a tour of Europe
for four months. In 2010 Mayfleld toured Europe for 256 days supporting German cult band
“Emil Bulls”, the Rick Rubin produced “Bakkushan” and Julien-K.
In 2009 Mayfield had 3 songs synced in the Miramax film starring Clive Owen “The Boys Are
Back”. So far in 2011 Warner Brothers asked to use Mayfield songs in an upcoming film starring
Zac Effron “The Lucky One” based on the Nicholas Sparks novel.
Currently in Nashville recording their new album with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In
Chains, Foo Fighters, Deftones, Stone Sour, Rush), Mayfield are back on the road in Europe
from April/May 2011.
Stone Parade Rock
What started out as a jam in a pool side cabana, turned into months
of sleeping on floors in LA and has now resulted in Stone Parade’s
second full length album Stratosphere.
Riding on the wave of their success with the Nokia Be Heard
Competition and more recently, the International Song Writing
Competition, the boys from the Northern Beaches of Sydney,
Australia have toured extensively over the past 5 years including
supporting the likes of Maroon 5, Hoobastank, 3 Doors Down and
INXS. Their latest offering was mixed by renowned US world class
producer Mark Needham, whos past works include The Killers and
My Chemical Romance.
Needham was high in his praise of the band “Stone Parade is one of the most talented bands
we have worked with this year. All of us here are BIG fans of these guys.” The band has made
three successful trips to Los Angeles where they recorded their initial demos at Interscope
Records and performed a sold out show at the famous Viper Room.
The On Fires
Who knew that a chance meeting of two teenagers at a swimming
camp on Australia’s Gold Coast would lead to an international touring
band? Described as “the bastard lovechild of the B52s and the Sex
Pistols” references to other bands have included Flaming Lips,
Blondie, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, The Clash, Green Day,
Stereophonics, Siouxsie and The Banshees, even Elvis Costello.
Every year The On Fires’ reach grows wider, from Australia to
Ukraine, Poland to the USA, Slovakia to the Solomon Islands. College,
community and commercial radio stations play tracks from the band’s most recent release
Betrayer. Fox Sports, Quiksilver Surfing, VH1’s Tough Love and MTV’s NitroCircus, Taking The
Stage are also airing tracks. With nine international tours under their belt, the band attributes
their raucous, vibrant and slightly unhinged style of performing to their first hardcore punk
audience in Kiev. The On Fires exploded into a blur of red hair, sweat and mayhem.
Sponsored in 2011 by the live music website uRockHard.com, Canadian Music Week kicks off
6 weeks of touring in North America, followed by tours through China (including that nation’s
biggest festival, Zebra) and Central Europe before returning to the USA and Australia for
dates in the second half of the year.
The Resignators Ska/Punk
Melbourne’s suburban ska all-stars The Resignators, never
knew back in 2005 that their infectious sound and trend
defying style would take them around the world. As one
of Australia’s hardest working independent bands, The
Resignators have seen it all, playing over 450 shows both
nationally and internationally. This road hardened sextet
know how to get any room of people on their feet and
skanking to their Ska infused beats.
2009 brought new hope for the band with an invite to join the cream of Australian artists,
representing the nation at South by South West, in Austin, Texas. This amazing opportunity
happened to coincide with The band releasing ‘Offbeat time’ (Stomp), a combination of
both the Resignators debut album and EP for North American audiences though Montreal
based Stomp records. These two enormous milestones for the band meant one thing; An
epic tour through Canada and USA. Armed with nothing but a ‘she’ll be right mate’ attitude
and a ‘punch in the face’ live show, the Resignators set out to Vancouver. They bought a van
and drove it across the Canadian ice and snow, down to Texas and then back up to Montreal,
playing over forty shows across the two nations.
Wagons Americana / Country / Rock
Led by charismatic showman Henry Wagons and described as a
‘local treasure’, WAGONS offer an unlikely mix of stompin’ grand
rock, border-crossing dark country, irresistible crooning and classic
pop. They draw upon an uncommon range of influences given the
current musical climate, including Vegas era Elvis, Roy Orbison,
Adam Green, Johnny Cash, Clockwork Orange synthesisers, 70s
trumpets and Cormac MacCarthy.
Their live show is a performance like no other, treading a line
between a Vegas 70s showroom extravaganza and a bunch of
fresh- faced undertakers letting loose at a rained sodden rock festival. Their latest album,
The Rise and Fall of Goodtown, the band’s fourth, has seen them win best group and best
album in the 2009 Age EG Awards as well as in the Mess and Noise Readers Poll along with
a string of feature album, best live act and record of the year accolades. Henry Wagons
was also recently named as one of the ‘Top 100 Most Influential Melbournians’ by The Age
Melbourne Magazine.
Having spent the last few years supporting and touring with the likes of Justin Townes Earle,
The Violent Femmes, Calexico, Bill Callahan, Will Oldham, Okkervil River, John Hiatt and Jolie
Holland, it is safe to say that Wagons are a road-hardened, formidable live band.
