Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Musculoskeletal
Ultrasound in Rheumatology
Sunday 22 nd – Tuesday 24 th May 2011
Queens Hotel, Leeds, UK

18 th EULAR Ultrasound Course: Information
Scientific Committee:
Dr Richard Wakefield (Leeds, UK)
Dr Jane Freeston (Leeds, UK)
Convenor:
Dr Richard Wakefield (Leeds, UK)
Venue: The Queens Hotel, Leeds, UK
Course opening: Sunday 22 nd May 2011 at 12:00 hrs
Course closing: Tuesday 24 th May 2011 at 17:30 hrs
Participants: 105 – 110 participants
Structure: The course will be run simultaneously at three levels – Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. Each
course will consist of plenary lectures with demonstrations and hands-on scanning in small groups with
experienced tutors.
Faculty: The faculty will consist of experienced international tutors from the fields of rheumatology, radiology and
medical physics.
The courses:
The Basic course will focus on gaining an understanding of how an ultrasound machine works, how to acquire a
good image, the use of standardised examination techniques and the appreciation of the normal ultrasound
appearance of tissues. It will also include some basic pathology. There will be no prerequisites for those
delegates attending the Basic Course.
Specific learning objectives for the Basic Course:
1. To know the basic principles of physics underlying use of ultrasound.
2. To acknowledge the indications and limitations (including pitfalls) of performing an ultrasound assessment.
3. To demonstrate the basic controls of the ultrasound machine.
4. To perform an ultrasound assessment of each major anatomical area using a structured system of
examination.
5. To correctly identify normal anatomy using ultrasound.
6. To correctly identify basic pathological findings (e.g. synovitis, effusions, bone erosions, bursitis, tendon
disease).

The Intermediate courses will focus on a wider spectrum of rheumatological pathology. It is recommended that
all applicants with have attended a Basic Course beforehand (either EULAR or National Course) and will have
performed at least 100 scans.
Specific learning objectives for the Intermediate Course:
1. To recall the standard scan technique for each anatomical region (according to EULAR guidelines:
Backhaus M et al. ARD;200160:641-9)
2. To demonstrate and describe the principal joint related pathologies seen in each anatomical region.
3. To know the principles of Doppler physics.
4. To acknowledge the indications and limitations (including pitfalls) of performing an ultrasound assessment
with particular reference to Doppler studies.
5. To identify and score the major inflammatory joint pathologies.
6. To perform ultrasound guided joint / tissue injections.
7. To understand the role of ultrasound in clinical and research practice.
8. To correctly identify pathological findings (as in Basic Course plus tendons, nerves, ligaments, muscle,
cartilage, cysts, crystals).
The Advanced course will focus on more complex or uncommon pathologies, newer technological developments
and research related aspects of ultrasonography. It will include paediatrics, vasculitis and sports related issues.
It is recommended that participants will be experienced sonographers who will have at least attended an
Intermediate course (either EULAR or National) and performed at least 300 scans.
Specific learning objectives for the Advanced Course:
1. To understand the role of ultrasound in paediatrics.
2. To learn the role of musculoskeletal ultrasound in vasculitis and autoimmune diseases (e.g. Sjorgren’s
syndrome).
3. To know the most up to date literature on the applications of ultrasound in rheumatology.
4. To acquire hands-on experience with the new technological developments of 3D ultrasound, virtual
navigator and elastography.
5. To discuss complex management issues and the place of ultrasound issues with the experts.
Course assessment:
Delegates will have an opportunity for formative assessment during the practical workshops. We will also attempt
to collect feedback from tutors on each delegate in order to deliver an individualised and confidential report at the
end of the course e.g. areas did well, areas to improve on. In addition, an informal MCQ and EMQ style
assessment will be performed.

Course certification:
Currently we are not in a position to legally certify the professional competence of a delegate. However, informal
feedback will be given to each delegate and a certificate of attendance supplied. CPD credits will be applied for
from UEMS and the Royal College of Physicians (UK).
Course evaluation:
The course will be evaluated with respect to educational content, course management and venue.
