A Letter From Our Leadership 

It’s remarkable what a community can do. Together. With our mission to 

ensure Jewish survival and enhance the quality of Jewish life, we provide 

help to thousands in need each year, and we are the lifeline for the hungry, 

the homeless, the displaced and the lonely. Together, we are a call to action, 

mobilizing our resources to make a difference. Together, we are the network 

that connects people to people. Together, we are a vital link to Israel, our 

tradition, our past and our future. Together, we are Federation. 

In a year marked by economic uncertainty and continuing global instability, 

the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle demonstrated our community’s 

exceptional organizational strength, resources and impact. 

Together, our total philanthropic achievement, of almost $12 million touched 

thousands of lives, here at home, in Israel and in Jewish communities around 

the world. Together, on four separate missions, we sent almost 100 Seattleites 

to Israel, plus many more students and young adults received scholarships to 

study in Israel, go on birthright israel, or attend Alexander Muss High School 

in Israel. Together, we continue to maximize our resources, to enhance our 

educational network, to expand vital social services, and initiate new programs 

in our community. 

Reviewing the past year of achievement in this report, we recognize and 

applaud those individuals who have given from the heart for the betterment 

of our community’s future, those who have raised their hands for countless 

tasks and generous acts of volunteerism, those who have voted with their 

feet to participate in our Missions, events and programs, and those who have 

demonstrated the vision and courage to lead. 

Year in, year out, we give ourselves the challenge of reaching higher, giving 

more, learning more, expecting more of ourselves, and by extension, demanding 

more of our organizations. Together, we must choose our priorities. Together, we 

can hold onto what is important to us. Together, we stand with Israel. Together, 

we can make a difference. Together, we can live generously and do a world of 

good.

Greatest Needs Fund 

In North America, the annual Federation Community Campaigns are the most accomplished, 

most respected fundraising vehicles in the world. Every year, the $850+ million national 

campaign literally turns the lights on for the world’s 13 million Jews, providing the basic 

infrastructure for members of our community to get help and to give it. The Jewish Federation 

of Greater Seattle is proud that our local community gave more than $6 million to our Greatest 

Needs Fund, the centerpiece of our local annual Community Campaign. 

Seattle’s Greatest Needs Fund is part of a continent-wide success story that represents hundreds 

of thousands of philanthropists and millions of dollars that bring dignity, integrity and improved 

quality of life to the elderly, the disabled and other vulnerable Jews and non-Jews wherever they 

live, whatever they need. 

Each gift represents the commitment of our entire community to secure the future of the Jewish 

people through leadership, advocacy and education by engaging young families, providing a 

deeper connection to Israel and creating a visionary alliance between young and old. 

Each gift to the Greatest Needs Fund means more than 40 Jewish organizations and projects— 

such as Jewish Family Service, the Caroline Kline Galland Center and the Stroum Jewish 

Community Center—can devote more time, energy and funds towards what they do best— 

providing valuable services to our community—and less time, energy and resources to raising 

much-needed funds.

Campaign 

In this record-breaking year, 

we raised $8.6 million. We 

also worked hard to better 

understand the philanthropic 

goals of our generous donors 

and work in closer partnership 

with agencies to address 

real community needs. 

Of the $8.6 million raised in this year’s annual Community Campaign, 

$6.2 million was raised for our Greatest Needs Fund and was allocated 

among four pillars—Human Need, Jewish Education, Jewish Identity and 

Community Building, and World Jewry—comprising more than 33 local, 

national and international benefi ciaries, including those that have no 

other means of support. 

The remaining $2.4 million raised was designated by donors to specifi c 

agencies and special projects. For example, Seattle-area Jews responded 

with compassion for the victims of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia, 

raising more than $100,000 to help those in need. 

Examples of allocations to the four pillars: 

1. Human Need: Jewish Family Service received an additional 

$10,000 to implement its Senior Services strategic plan. 

2. Jewish Education: Hillel at the UW received an increase of more 

than $8,000 for its programming for 21-30-year-olds at its new campus 

facility. 

3. Jewish Identity and Community Building: The Stroum Jewish 

Community Center was allocated a second year of additional funding in 

the amount of $15,000 to support its North Seattle operations. 

4. World Jewry: The Khabarovsk Chesed Center in Eastern Siberia 

received new funding of more than $21,000—on top of the Federation’s 

continued allocation of $28,500—to feed the hungry in the former 

Soviet Union.

Israel and Overseas 

Israel 

Israeli-born Dan Gared, now a Kiryat Malachi 

high school senior, is the youngest member of 

an Ethiopian family that emigrated to Israel 

in the 80’s. For the past two years, Dan has 

been an active member of the Kiryat Malachi 

youth council, helping to clean the city, 

bringing the Jewish holidays to the disabled 

and learning leadership skills. This summer 

Dan was a counselor at the Stroum JCC. Our 

partnership with Kiryat Malachi and the Hof 

Ashkelon region of Israel means teens like Dan 

have the chance to be role models for younger 

generations, teach U.S. youngsters about Israel 

and grow up to be true leaders for Israel. Our 

funds from the annual Community Campaign 

make all this happen; you too can be a part 

of ensuring that Israel’s future leadership gets 

the education and training it needs to fulfi ll its 

dreams. 

Dan Gared 

Former Soviet Union 

Polina, 78, lives alone in a dreary, Stalin–era 

apartment in Khabarovsk. Isolated and childless, 

she carries herself with dignity, hiding the shame 

of years of deprivation. Evacuated with her family 

from their Ukraine home when she was 15, at the 

outbreak of World War II, she made bombs in a 

factory in Khabarovsk while her father worked in 

an armaments center. After the war, she became 

a teacher. After 50 years of dedicated service, 

Polina has retired, but her pension isn’t enough to 

feed her. Your gift ensures older adults like Polina 

are able to live their lives with dignity and a 

connection to the Jewish community by providing 

monthly food baskets, friendly visitors and medical 

assistance to Russia’s neediest Jewish elderly.

Jewish Education Council 

The Community High School of Jewish Studies 

“Hebrew High” offered three trimesters of classes at the Stroum Jewish 

Community Center. 190 students learned about Judaism through text study, 

art, fi lm, history and more. 22 students took a 10-day trip to Israel that 

focused on community service. 

Jewish Education Services This year eight teachers earned 

Jewish teaching certifi cates through the JEC’s Midrasha (teacher training) 

program. The JEC sponsored three major community-wide teacher learning 

events—two Back-to-School Specials, and ‘Heart of the Matter. Debbie 

Friedman’s concert, attended by 1,000 at Temple de Hirsch Sinai, honored 

Carol Starin’s retirement after 14 years as director of the JEC. We nominated 

Seattle’s fi rst two Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award winners—Beth Fine and 

Sharon Morrison. 

Limmud NW 2005 marked the fi rst year-round cycle of Limmud, with 

the expansion of our summer program. Offerings included special classes that 

bridged the moral values divide, and a fi rst-time writing class encouraged 

students to write their “Jewish Journey.” 

Israel Program Support 345 participants are enrolled in Milk & 

Honey, a matching savings program for trips to Israel. In addition since 2000, 

more than 150 students have redeemed their $500 Community Investment 

Portfolios, with 61 redeemed this year. Funds apply toward educational Israel 

trips. 

Camp Scholarships We awarded nearly $50,000 in camp 

scholarships (including $2,800 from the Stan Rosen Teen Campership Fund), 

enabling Jewish community campers to attend Jewish overnight camps 

throughout the country. 

Study Buddy This tutoring program of the Federation and B’nai B’rith 

Evergreen Region has more than 150 active tutors in Seattle-area public 

schools. Study Buddy’s ‘Laughter and Literacy’ event brought in more than 

1,000 books for Seattle schools in need.

Young Leadership Division

by a new board of directors and 

a new YLD Director, Aaron 

Schwamberg—2005 was a year of 

change and growth. 

This year, a re-evaluation of YLD’s mission and programming culminated 

in a broad email-based survey and two focus groups, results of which will be 

used to grow the YLD presence and strengthen its role in the community. 

While that strategic work was underway, YLD gathered in multiple ways at 

a variety of venues to network and socialize, raise funds for the community, 

and continue developing tomorrow’s community leaders. 

Highlights of YLD’s 2005 activities include: 

• Two highly successful community-building events—600 young adults 

aged 25-45 years attended LatkePalooza in December, and 300 

attended SchmoozaPalooza in July at Safeco Field; 

• A 2004 pre-election educational event to better understand Jewish 

issues political and concerns; 

• A special thank-you event for Ben Gurion Society members (YLD’ers 

who give $1,000 or more to the annual Community Campaign) with 

the founder of He’Brew, “The Chosen Beer”; and 

• A re-vamped Main Event fundraiser, featuring a silent auction, casino 

games and prizes, all in a casual atmosphere.

Women’s Philanthropy 

The Women’s Division, a 

dynamic part of our organization, 

enjoyed another successful year, 

including raising one-third of the 

Community Campaign funds from 

approximately 1,200 donors. 

From Connections, our main fundraising event, and our annual meeting to 

specialized groups such as the Business & Professional Women’s Division and 

Lion of Judah, Women’s Division can celebrate wonderful accomplishments, 

both fi nancial and in terms of community building and outreach. 

Chair Patty Lazarus led a motivated, committed and energetic team of 

women including Tina Novick, Past Chair; Alise Tarica, Campaign Chair; 

Susie Eastern, Campaign Vice-Chair; Shelley Bensussen, Lion of Judah 

Division Chair; Barbara Sulman and Leslie Rosen, International Lion of 

Judah Conference Recruitment Co-chairs; Julie Ellenhorn and Lisa Brashem, 

Connections Co-chairs; Naomi Newman, Leadership Development Chair; 

Tami Rogers, Women’s Division Annual Meeting Chair; Amy Agoado, 

B&P Chair, and Amy Adler, B&P Campaign Chair. 

Highlights of the year include: 

• Lion of Judah: 13 women became new Lions this year. Margaret Larson 

made a moving presentation at the Lion Lunch held at the new Hillel 

building. In addition, for the fi rst time Lion parlor parties were held 

with 100 percent of attendees committing to the Lion of Judah giving 

level ($5,000). 

• Connections: Academy-Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin—a Jewish 

woman, mother, wife, actress and supporter of United Jewish Communities 

and helping Jews in need —entertained and inspired a diverse group of 440 

women in attendance , both long-time and new donors. 

• Business & Professional Women: With presentations ranging from 

women as small-business owners and entrepreneurs to the role of women 

in the media, including speakers such as KUOW’s Marcie Sillman, this 

group successfully reached out to professional women in our community. 

• Women’s Division Annual Meeting: We honored Alice Siegal with the 

2004 Sara Kaplan Award for Outstanding Community Service at a high 

tea at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel.

Building Community 

Bashert, the LGBT Initiative, is designed to further the mission of 

the Federation by reaching out to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender 

Jews in Greater Seattle in order to build a stronger, more inclusive 

Jewish community. This initiative creates opportunities for Jews to come 

together, celebrate and explore their Jewish identities in a welcoming 

environment. Bashert was launched in April 2005 with a panel 

discussion, “Contracts and Covenants: Religious and Legal Perspectives.” 

birthright israel provides the gift of a free fi rst-time, peer-group, 

educational trip to Israel for Jewish young adults ages 18 to 26 who have 

never before been to Israel. More than 32,000 young adults from all over 

the world have been to Israel on a birthright israel trip. This year, more 

than 200 young adults from or living in Seattle took part. 

Blue Knot Technology Initiative was launched in 

September 2004 and hosted six outreach and education events for more 

than 200 Jewish technology professionals in the greater Seattle area. 

Cardozo Society is an honor society for Jewish attorneys who 

make a minimum gift of $1,500 to the annual Community Campaign. 

The Society sponsors programs that integrate legal and Jewish concerns 

to demonstrate the unique contributions the legal profession can make to 

improve the Jewish community. 

Israel Solidarity Walk The second annual Walk, held this 

year at Gas Works Park, brought together hundreds of people who braved 

the gray skies and marched in support of Israel. People from throughout 

Seattle’s Jewish community gathered, and together relayed one clear and 

important message: We stand with Israel. 

Maimonides Society is an honor society for Jewish physicians 

and dentists who make a minimum gift of $1,500 to the annual 

Community Campaign. The Society also sponsors programs which 

integrate medical and Jewish concerns to demonstrate the unique 

contributions the medical profession can make to improve the Jewish 

community. 

Professional Advisory Roundtable This year, the 

Federation hosted six educational events for planned giving professionals, 

including our fi rst ever collaborative event with The Seattle Foundation.

Israel Advocacy and 

Government Affairs 

Israel Advocacy Authors David Olesker and Hirsch Goodman 

shared their perspectives on the disengagement from Gaza, and Consul 

General David Akov brought the community up to date on Israel in 

general. Government Affairs An Aging Issues Forum was held 

at the Stroum JCC in September 2004, where more than 100 older adults 

learned about the legislative issues affecting them and heard from the thengubernatorial-candidates 

on potential solutions. Our work with the 2005 state 

legislative session was extremely successful. We secured funding for our key 

agencies and helped pass important human-rights legislation. By advocating 

for our benefi ciary agencies, we ensure important state and federal funding is 

continued or increased and push for human-rights issues that benefi t us all. 

This work also helps protect the millions of state and federal dollars that fl ow 

to our agencies each year. Homeland Security funds became available through 

the state for our communal institutions and we’ve been notifi ed that we’ve 

won a grant of $100,000 for four of our agencies.

employment programs for contracting agencies such as JFS 

• $1 million in additional funding for naturalization programs such as the 

one at JFS 

• Elimination of the “bed tax” that was a drain on the Caroline Kline

• Passage of a new law barring life insurance companies from denying 

coverage to people who travel to Israel

Campaign Phone-a-thon. Raquel called Simon to make his annual pledge...and the rest is history! 

Judaism plays an important role in our lives. It is our connection to Judaism and its rich history that brought 

us together. Our love of family, friends and the Jewish community in Seattle and around the world inspires us to 

support the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle. 

We are proud to be a part of the Seattle Jewish community and intend to continue giving of our time and 

tzedakah to the Jewish Federation. 

For us, the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle has become more than a fundraising and leadership
