Diya Foundation provides vocational training and sheltered employment to differently abled adults in Bangalore. Scaling Greater Heights ‘Diya’s Sheltered Workshop enhances training and employment opportunities for the differently abled’ Our People Diya’s workshop expanded operations and shifted to a larger premise in September 2009. The gift of a Maruti Van for transportation helped increase the total number of trainees to 30. A well-designed curriculum to impart different skills enhanced all round progress. The trainees painted terracotta diyas, made paper bags and lampshades, decorated greeting cards, and packed chocolates in boxes. Outdoor activities included picnics, games and painting competitions. At Diya, our trainees are on a journey to discover their abilities and involve in activities that bring joy, confidence and fulfillment into their lives. Our Products New lip smacking chocolate flavors, designer candles and diyas, colorful greeting cards, eco-friendly paper products and exquisite packaging options rolled out of our workshop last year. These were in great demand by corporate houses and individuals as they celebrated festivals, birthdays, and weddings. Bulk orders ensured employment opportunities for our trainees. Our Patrons Funds for the Workshop were raised through Diya’s staff, sponsors and participants at the World 10-K, a Christmas musical by the Cecilian Choir, donations from Opus restaurants and individual supporters. Investments were made in facilities and programs that helped enhance the training of 30 mentally challenged adults. At the Workshop, our trainees learn new skills, grow in an environment of love, care, and acceptance, and earn monthly stipends. AS THEY SCALE GREATER HEIGHTS, SO DOES DIYA.
Manjula: On a New Journey Twenty six year old Manjula was born with Down’s Syndrome and spent most of her childhood confined at home. However, ten years ago, destiny determined to terminate the stagnation in her life. Manjula became one of the first few differently abled trainees to join Diya Foundation’s Vocational Training program. Life at Diya introduced her to a new world of opportunities – a world where she made new friends, discovered and developed inherent skills, and learnt a trade. Manjula’s training program began in the Paper Product Unit. Under diligent supervision and care by Diya’s staff, she learnt to recycle newspaper, Last year, Diya excitedly welcomed Mrs. Mary Thomas, a Counsellor and Social Worker, into its family. Mary, who considers social work not as a mere “job” but as an “integral part of one’s life,” was actively involved with the welfare and rehabilitation of differently abled people for 25 years. During this period, she also initiated a rehabilitation program for Spinal Cord injured persons in Bangalore. At Diya, Mary Thomas has been actively involved in spending quality time with our mentally challenged trainees. They love to receive words of encouragement from her and run to her for help when hurt or in trouble. She monitors their progress in work, recreational activities and needs for a balanced and healthy diet. Mary instills make pens, bags, bowls and other products. She has always been a keen and enthusiastic learner. Today, Manjula works with minimal supervision and often helps in training others like her at Diya. She accompanies Diya’s staff on outdoor trips to display and market products made at the workshop. When customers buy her products, it fills her with a sense of pride and fulfilment. Moreover, a monthly stipend offers her financial security. At Diya, Manjula is thrilled that life has opened a new vista for her. The new journey she has embarked on helps her discover herself and scale Mary Thomas: Counsellor of Hope hope and confidence into their lives. She visits their homes to counsel and guide family members. Her untiring efforts have ensured that the trainees become beneficiaries of the greater heights – a journey that also fuels Diya Foundation to greater heights. Government’s Social Security Schemes and medical welfare programs. Both staff and trainees at Diya have benefited immensely from her expertise in guidance and counseling. Her dream is to see Diya establish itself in a permanent premise, become self sufficient through its vocational activities, and thereby impact a larger number of differently abled people. With her effective agenda for change and progress and an unwavering spirit of service, Mary Thomas is a valuable asset to Diya. She has become a powerful catalyst in the transformational journey of Diya towards greater heights.
