The Friar Angelico Cross
Th e Artist. Th e cross was painted by Friar Angelico, also known as
Fray Angelico de Fiesole. He was born in Mugello, Italy, a small town
north of Florence, in 1395.
His given name was Guido
di Pietro. He joined the
Dominican Order, took the
religious name Fra Giovanni,
and resided at the
Convent of San Dominico
in Fiesole. He was a
man of deep prayer and he
expressed his deep faith
in his art. He is regarded
as one of the greatest Italian
painters of the Early
Renaissance. His most famous
works are Th e Annunciation,
Th e Coronation
of Mary, Th e Desposition
from the Cross, Th e Mocking
of Christ, and Th e Adoration
of the Magi. A fellow
monk who admired his
artisanship nicknamed him
Fra Angelico, the Angelic
Friar. He died in Rome on February 18, 1455, and soon afterward became
known as Th e Angelic Painter.
Present Location. Th e Friar Angelico Cross is located in the Treasury
of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Toledo, Spain. Th e Treasury is located in the
back of the cathedral, a secure room for the most valuable sacred vessels,
vestments, statues, paintings, and other artwork.
Description. Th e Friar Angelico Cross is a painted cross on wood with
images on both sides. One side depicts Christ alive, while the other depicts
Christ dead. Th e cross “was presented to the cathedral after the
Spanish civil war (1936-1939) by the then head of the Italian government”
(Gonzalez, D. L. A., Toledo Cathedral: Art and History, Toledo,
Spain: Artes Grafi cas, 64). Th e predominant color is gold. Th e four ends
have rounded lobes with an image within each.
Jesus, the Central Figure. Th e focal point is the center image of the
crucifi ed Jesus. Th ere is a black Latin Cross underneath his body. His head
is surrounded by a golden halo bordered by a thin black line and inlaid with
a partial red cross. A black crown of thorns surrounds his head, his hair
is long and fl owing onto his shoulders, and his eyes are open and gazing
upward. His upper torso and legs are upright, not sagging, and without
wounds. His arms are outstretched almost horizontally and blood is fl owing
from the nail marks. His feet are overlapping, pinned with a single nail,
with streams of blood. Above his
head there is a red sign with four
gold letters, “INRI,” the Latin initials
for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum,
Jesus of Nazareth, King
of the Jews, the inscription Pilate
had affi xed to the cross (Jn 19:19).
Th e Four Figures. Th ere is an
image at each end of the cross
both front and back. On the front
the top image is a mother pelican
feeding her chicks, a symbol for
Christ feeding the members of the
Church; the bottom is St. Dominic,
arms upraised; the left is the
Blessed Virgin Mary in blue; and
the right is the Beloved Disciple
in red. On the back the top fi gure
is St. John the Evangelist with his
right hand raised and his left hand
holding an open book, the symbol
for his literary contributions to
the New Testament: the gospel of
John; his letters (1,2,3 John), and
the Book of Revelation. Th e top
page is inscribed with the letter
Alpha, the fi rst letter of the Greek
alphabet, a reference to Jesus who
is the Alpha and the Omega (Rev
1:8; 21:6; 22:13). Th e bottom fi gure
is St. Dominic clothed with
a brown habit. Th e left fi gure is
a saint with a tattered cloak,his
right hand holding the cord of a
red hat. Th e right fi gure is a bishop
with miter and crozier, dressed
in a violet cope and holding a large
red book in his left hand.

Message of the Second Vatican Council to Youth

The following excerpt is from a message to youth issued in 1965 as the
Second Vatican Council was wrapping up its four years of deliberations.

still rings true today.
The Church looks to you with confi dence and with love. Rich with a long
past ever living in her, and marching on toward human perfection in
time and the ultimate destinies of history and of life, the Church is the
real youth of the world. She possesses what constitutes the strength
and the charm of youth, that is to say, the ability to rejoice with what
is beginning, to give oneself unreservedly, to renew oneself and to
set out again for new conquests. Look upon the Church and you will fi nd
in her the face of Christ, the genuine, humble and wise Hero, the Prophet
of truth and love, the Companion and Friend of youth. It is in the name of
Christ that we salute you, that we exhort and bless you. (7 December 1965)
Baptism Preparation Class
Parents wishing to have their child baptized are asked to register as
members of our parish and must attend the Baptism Preparation Session.
Parents must also provide a copy of their child’s birth certifi cate
prior to the Baptism celebration.
The next Baptism Preparation Session is Tuesday, November 6 at
7:00 p.m. in the Holy Cross Chapel. Please call the parish offi ce at 763-
421-2471 to register for the session or to make an appointment to meet
with Fr. Nathan individually if you are not able to attend the scheduled
class date.

Faith Formation Schedule Note

First Reconciliation Event Time Change
Parents of students wishing to participate in the Sacrament of First Reconciliation
are asked to note that the First Reconciliation Retreat will be
at 6:30 p.m. on November 5 and November 8. At least one parent and
the child are asked to attend this 60-75 minute session in the Church on
ONE of these evenings. If you have any questions or concerns, please

Learning Our Faith Is Fun!
Second grade Faith Formation catechist Michelle Johnson demonstrated
that learning our faith can be fun! Mrs. Johnson devised a “Chutes and
Ladders” game with masking tape on the classroom fl oor and asked her
students and those of another Wednesday second grade class questions
about choosing from right or wrong…with appropriate consequences
for moving up or down the game board with either the right or wrong
answer!

All You Holy Men and Women, Pray for Us Amy Chabot
Last week, I invited you to refl ect on the lives of your favorite saints in
preparation for the feast of All Saints. This week, I would like to highlight
one of my favorite Blesseds: Blessed Elizabeth of the
Trinity. Elizabeth of the Trinity was a Carmelite nun
in Dijon, France around the same time as Therese of
Lisieux. She was known for her devotion to the indwelling
of the Trinity. In fact she composed a beautiful
prayer to the Trinity which begins with these
words: “O my God, Trinity whom I adore, help me
to become utterly forgetful of myself so that I may
establish myself in you, as changeless and calm as
though my soul were already in eternity. Let nothing disturb my peace
nor draw me forth from you, O my unchanging God, but at every moment
may I penetrate more deeply into the depths of your mystery. Give
peace to my soul; make it your heaven, your cherished dwelling-place
and the place of your repose. Let me never leave you there alone, but
keep me there, wholly attentive, wholly alert in my faith, wholly adoring
and fully given up to your creative action.” Blessed Elizabeth’s feast day
is November 8.
Prayer Shawl Ministry Meets Friday
This ministry is one which extends God’s love to others through meditation
and prayer while knitting or crocheting.
We will meet Friday, November 2 at noon in the Archbishop Romero
Room. We warmly invite new members!

You Can Help WHO Feed Starving Children
Join the WHO (We Help Others) group the fi rst Wednesday of the
month as we spend the morning packing food to help prevent children
from starving throughout the world. Meet us
November 7 at 9:15 a.m. at Feed My Starving
Children, 401 93rd Avenue NW in Coon Rapids.

We are a Catholic, family, fraternal, service organization. If you are a
Catholic male and 18 years of age you and your family are

All Are Invited to Stepping Stone’s Open House at
Its New Facility

Stepping Stone Emergency Housing (shelter) has enjoyed a unique and
signifi cant relationship with St. Stephen's since its board's inception in
2005. Fr. Mike has generously selected Stepping Stone as an almsgiving
recipient; most of the original and current board members are parishioners;
many others, including our kitchen volunteers as well as members
of the WHO group, Stephen Ministers and individual donors have been
instrumental in the success of reaching out to individuals experiencing
homelessness in Anoka County.
As a "thank you," Stepping Stone would like to invite you to its “new
home." Because of you, and others like you, Stepping Stone has been
able to move to a new facility and
will be able to accommodate 60
residents instead of the 16 residents
they could shelter in the old
facility. This tremendous growth
was most certainly a community
eff ort bringing all kinds of folks together
to work for one united and common goal - to love one another,
as we have been loved.
Please plan to attend the Open House on Sunday, November 11, from
2:00-5:00 p.m. at 3300 4th Avenue, Cronin Building #14 on the campus
of the Anoka Metro Regional Treatment Center. For more information

Fostering Small Group Community
D-groups are gender specific small groups of four to six High School students who
meet every few weeks to talk about issues that matter to them in a faith
context. We currently have 49 youth actively involved in eight different groups.
Our High School Faith Formation program uses 45 catechists, those
who volunteer to teach, to help our high school students deepen their
faith and knowledge in preparation for Confirmation.
St. Stephen’s Softball Team is a
part of a Christian League. This is
an opportunity for High School
students to have fun with their
friends while meeting others from
surrounding Churches.
Mission Trips are a vital component of our ministry with High
School students. This past summer, 25 youth served in Joplin,
MO, and 13 youth served the parish on the Red Lake Indian
Reservation by leading vacation bible school. Next summer,
we are planning two more mission trips to help the youth take
their faith to the next level...putting it
into practice!

The High School CORE Team
Our High School CORE Team of about 25 students volunteer on one of three peer
ministry teams to minister to the youth of the parish.
Teams are:
Monthly Opportunities—Every month, we offer programming for
High School students in The Refuge, our parish youth room.
November 14 —The Study: a bible study from 7–8:00 p.m.
Current Topic: The life of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew
November 28 —Open Refuge: 6:30–9:00 p.m.; games,
faith sharing, hanging out and learning from each other
High School Team—Plan High School Events
Middle School Team—Plan Middle School Events
Evan Out Team—The Evangelization Team
November 30 —Last Friday After Party: 9:00 p.m. –
12:00 midnight; fun, games, and fellowship in a great setting
