Foreword<br />
Hans-Peter Villis<br />
Dear Reader,<br />
This <str<strong>on</strong>g>2007</str<strong>on</strong>g> booklet is designed to supplement<br />
<strong>the</strong> Susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ability Report and provides an updated<br />
descripti<strong>on</strong> of EnBW's commitment to<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>go<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tegrati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cept of susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ability<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> all our bus<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ess processes. Susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>able<br />
and resp<strong>on</strong>sible acti<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> good<br />
of <strong>the</strong> company and for <strong>the</strong> good of society as<br />
a whole is an <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tegral part of our corporate<br />
strategy.<br />
From <strong>the</strong> po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t of view of an energy supplier,<br />
resp<strong>on</strong>sible acti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> this area primarily means<br />
<strong>the</strong> spar<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g use of resources and sensitive<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>teracti<strong>on</strong> with our envir<strong>on</strong>ment and our climate.<br />
Renewable forms of energy play a central<br />
role <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> this endeavour. That is why we have<br />
also made <strong>the</strong> goal of <strong>the</strong> German government<br />
to <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>crease <strong>the</strong> share of renewables to<br />
20% by 2020 our own target. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Our</str<strong>on</strong>g> strategy is<br />
designed to boost <strong>the</strong> share of renewables <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
overall power generati<strong>on</strong> at EnBW from <strong>the</strong><br />
current figure of 11.4% to around 20% by <strong>the</strong><br />
year 2020. In order to achieve this goal, we<br />
have earmarked <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestment of more than 3<br />
billi<strong>on</strong> euros <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> renewable forms of energy.<br />
The first – promis<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g – <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestments have already<br />
been made: <strong>the</strong> acquisiti<strong>on</strong> of four offshore<br />
w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dparks will enable us to develop<br />
around 1,200 megawatts of <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>stalled w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />
power capacity <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> medium term.
The efficient use of energy is ano<strong>the</strong>r core focus<br />
of our activities. This <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>cludes not <strong>on</strong>ly efficiency<br />
improvements <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> our own generat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />
plants but also <strong>the</strong> efficient use of energy by<br />
our customers. Through our sales companies,<br />
we are active across a broad fr<strong>on</strong>t to promote<br />
<strong>the</strong> efficient use of <strong>the</strong> energy we produce.<br />
The importance we at EnBW attach to envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />
protecti<strong>on</strong> is underl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed by our<br />
pi<strong>on</strong>eer<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g role <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> segment of energy suppliers<br />
when it comes to obta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g certificati<strong>on</strong><br />
for our envir<strong>on</strong>mental management system<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e with ISO 14001: EnBW is <strong>the</strong> first<br />
energy company <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Germany to <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>troduce an<br />
envir<strong>on</strong>mental management system based<br />
<strong>on</strong> this globally valid standard. By <strong>the</strong> end of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>2007</str<strong>on</strong>g>, over 70% of our employees were already<br />
work<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> companies with certified envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />
management systems. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Our</str<strong>on</strong>g> efforts<br />
to date have been focused <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Group-wide<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>troducti<strong>on</strong> and implementati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />
management system. As we will<br />
have achieved this goal by <strong>the</strong> beg<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>n<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g of<br />
2009, we <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tend to direct our future efforts<br />
towards fur<strong>the</strong>r improv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g our envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />
performance. To this end, <strong>the</strong> EnBW Management<br />
Board has adopted envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />
targets backed up by key performance <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dicators<br />
for <strong>the</strong> entire Group.<br />
Transparency is an important factor beh<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />
our success. This is why our report<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g processes<br />
are based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> globally valid criteria of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Global Report<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g Initiative (GRI). The report<br />
and <strong>the</strong> booklet were compiled <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> compliance<br />
with <strong>the</strong> 2006 GRI guidel<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es. This<br />
means <strong>the</strong>y provide a balanced and appropriate<br />
picture of <strong>the</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omic, ecological and<br />
social/societal performance of our organisati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
The Global Report<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g Initiative has c<strong>on</strong>firmed<br />
that we report <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> compliance with<br />
<strong>the</strong>se guidel<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>es and has <strong>the</strong>refore awarded us<br />
<strong>the</strong> certificate "<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> accordance with".<br />

New energy mix<br />
EnBW <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tends to <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vest around 7.6 billi<strong>on</strong><br />
euros <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> period up to 2010. This <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestment<br />
will primarily be geared towards<br />
growth, with tangible assets account<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g for<br />
around 4.6 billi<strong>on</strong> euros and f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ancial <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestments<br />
for roughly 3 billi<strong>on</strong> euros. More than<br />
3 billi<strong>on</strong> euros are earmarked for <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestment<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> renewables. This <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestment will make a<br />
major c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> towards achiev<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g our<br />
goal of <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>creas<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>the</strong> share of renewables <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<strong>the</strong> power we generate ourselves from 11.4 %<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>2007</str<strong>on</strong>g> to around 20% <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2020. The growth<br />
of generati<strong>on</strong> from renewables will primarily<br />
take <strong>the</strong> form of <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of offshore<br />
w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d parks. O<strong>the</strong>r targeted <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestment and<br />
growth segments <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>clude biomass and geo<strong>the</strong>rmal<br />
energy <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Germany, <strong>on</strong>shore w<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />
projects <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Eastern Europe and <strong>the</strong> expansi<strong>on</strong><br />
of hydroelectric power – <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Turkey, for example. It<br />
was aga<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>st this backdrop that EnBW set up<br />
<strong>the</strong> new "Renewables" bus<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ess area <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>2007</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
Efficiency <strong>on</strong> all levels<br />
There is huge untapped potential <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> area<br />
of energy efficiency. This applies not <strong>on</strong>ly to<br />
electricity generati<strong>on</strong> but also to <strong>the</strong> products<br />
and services we offer our customers. Of <strong>the</strong><br />
4.6 billi<strong>on</strong> euros <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> tangible assets, around 2<br />
billi<strong>on</strong> euros will be spent <strong>on</strong> mak<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g our<br />
electricity generat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g activities fit for future<br />
through <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>troducti<strong>on</strong> of new methods<br />
and <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>novative technologies and materials.<br />
This <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>cludes <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>versi<strong>on</strong> of exist<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />
power plants and <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of high-efficiency<br />
state-of-<strong>the</strong>-art generat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g systems.<br />
The energy-efficient products and services<br />
for our customers <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>clude <strong>the</strong> "EnBW Energy<br />
Efficiency Networks" which have made waves<br />
nati<strong>on</strong>wide and <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> which around 70 <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dustrial<br />
companies are meanwhile work<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>on</strong> energysav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

EnBW. The corresp<strong>on</strong>d<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g forum for big customers<br />
is "EnBW Energy Efficiency Forum".<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Our</str<strong>on</strong>g> aim is to pursue a wide-rang<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g and holistic<br />
strategy, as reflected <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> our campaign entitled<br />
"360-Degree Energy Efficiency Check".<br />
We provide our private customers with <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>formati<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>on</strong> energy-sav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g household appliances,<br />
alternative heat<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g technologies or tips<br />

Envir<strong>on</strong>mental protecti<strong>on</strong> at EnBW<br />
For EnBW, susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>able acti<strong>on</strong> means attach<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />
equal importance to its ec<strong>on</strong>omic, ecological<br />
and social resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities. In order to do<br />
everyth<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g we can to achieve this objective,<br />
we have <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tegrated all <strong>the</strong> relevant issues <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
our bus<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ess processes: we have developed a<br />
corporate identity based <strong>on</strong> values that determ<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e<br />
<strong>the</strong> way we c<strong>on</strong>duct ourselves every day<br />
both with<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> company and <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> our deal<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gs<br />
with <strong>the</strong> outside world. It is from <strong>the</strong>se values<br />
that we derive our envir<strong>on</strong>mental protecti<strong>on</strong><br />
pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ciples, pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ciples that place us under an<br />
obligati<strong>on</strong> to ensure susta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>able energy supplies,<br />
to optimise our communicati<strong>on</strong> and<br />
raise awareness levels and to systematically<br />
tailor our acti<strong>on</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> needs of envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />
protecti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>2007</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>ment protecti<strong>on</strong> costs<br />
The paramount importance of envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />
protecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> eyes of EnBW is underl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed by<br />
<strong>the</strong> way this issue has been made an <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tegral part<br />
of <strong>the</strong> job descripti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Board member at <strong>the</strong><br />

unit performs cross-company tasks and acts as<br />

targeted communicati<strong>on</strong> with<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Group.<br />
On an operati<strong>on</strong>al level, however, <strong>the</strong> real resp<strong>on</strong>sibility<br />
lies with <strong>the</strong> various companies, each and<br />
every <strong>on</strong>e of which must make its own c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong><br />
towards improv<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>the</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental performance<br />
of our Group. And <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>deed, every <strong>on</strong>e of us,<br />
every employee can make his or her own c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong><br />

Development of employee headcount<br />
In <str<strong>on</strong>g>2007</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>the</strong> number of employees fell by<br />
4.2%. This decrease is primarily due to <strong>the</strong> dec<strong>on</strong>solidati<strong>on</strong><br />
of <strong>the</strong> Uplus Group <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> bus<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ess<br />

for this factor, <strong>the</strong> number of employees<br />
actually <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>creased by 2%. In <strong>the</strong> gas<br />
bus<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ess area, employee growth was ma<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ly<br />
due to <strong>the</strong> full c<strong>on</strong>solidati<strong>on</strong> of Erdgas Südwest<br />
GmbH, while <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>crease <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> headcount<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> field of energy-related and envir<strong>on</strong>mental<br />

On December 31, <str<strong>on</strong>g>2007</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>the</strong> percentage of women<br />

which also <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>cludes our employees <strong>on</strong> partial<br />

At EnBW, <strong>the</strong> activities of <strong>the</strong> occupati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

The EnBW accident statistics also reflect <strong>the</strong><br />
high standards of our work safety management<br />
system: <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>2007</str<strong>on</strong>g>, <strong>the</strong> rate of reportable<br />
work-related accidents (accidents result<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

after figures of 7.9 <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2006 and 9.1 <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<strong>2005</strong> – excellent results compared to o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
