<strong>Amphibian</strong> Red List<br />

Internship Available<br />

The <strong>Amphibian</strong> Red List Authority seeks a volunteer intern to assist<br />

with maintenance and update of the amphibian conservation<br />

assessment database in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.<br />

The intern will receive formal training in the IUCN Red List Categories<br />

and Criteria, IUCN’s Species Information System (SIS) database<br />

and IUCN’s mapping standards. The internship will involve helping<br />

update the amphibian database and liaising with experts as needed<br />

to complete draft assessments. Potential interns should have a good<br />

understanding of amphibian taxonomy, declines and conservation,<br />

strong internet-search and data-mining skills and experience with<br />

GIS. Familiarity with operating and managing web systems as well<br />

as knowledge of the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria will be<br />

an asset. All interns must have an advance level of English, both spoken<br />

and written. While this is an unpaid internship, the intern will<br />

receive a free copy of Threatened <strong>Amphibian</strong>s of the World at the<br />

Lost Frogs update –<br />

Research Assistant Needed<br />

Thank you to all those who provided updates to the current lost frogs<br />

list published in the last edition of <strong>FrogLog</strong>. There have been a number<br />

of updates to the list, discussed below. The continued response<br />

we are receiving to in relation to this initiative means that we are<br />

looking for some additional support to help manage and develop the<br />

global initiative. We are looking for someone ideally working on an<br />

MSc or Phd who would be able to utilize the data generated by the<br />

searches for lost species.<br />

The position would initially be on a voluntary basis however once in<br />

place there would be the opportunity to develop funding proposals<br />

in conjunction with the ASG and our partners. The focus of the position<br />

would be to:<br />

● Develop a system for managing data related to lost species<br />

● Collaborate with the <strong>Amphibian</strong> Red List Authority to update<br />

assessments relating to Lost species.<br />

● Develop and refine our understanding and definition of what<br />

constitutes a lost and a rediscovered species<br />

● Assist with raising funds to support ongoing searches and post<br />

rediscovery conservation and research efforts<br />

Candidates will require a sound knowledge<br />

of database and web site development, and<br />

an interest in amphibian conservation. Experience<br />

with fund raising, media relations,<br />

GIS and the Red Listing process would all be<br />

beneficial.<br />

The Second Call<br />

for Proposals for<br />

SOS - Save Our<br />

Species is now open<br />

SOS – Save Our Species is a joint initiative of IUCN, the Global<br />

Environment Facility and the World Bank supported by Nokia and<br />

the Fonds français pour l’environnement mondial (FFEM). Its objective<br />

is to ensure the long-term survival of threatened species and<br />

their habitats. Since its launch in October 2010 in Nagoya, SOS has<br />

already funded 28 projects targeting threatened mammals, birds<br />

and amphibians in more than 27 countries.<br />

Applications for Threatened Species Grants will be accepted for the<br />

following Strategic Directions:<br />

● Threatened tropical Asian vertebrates<br />

● Threatened small marine mammals<br />

● Threatened cycads<br />

● Threatened freshwater African animals<br />

EPA and the Ecological Risks<br />

from the Use of Atrazine<br />

FIFRA ScIentIFIc AdvISoRy PAnel; notIce oF PublIc<br />

MeetIng<br />

There will be a 4-day meeting of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide,<br />

and Rodenticide Act Scientific Advisory Panel (FIFRA SAP) to<br />

consider and review Problem Formulation for the Reassessment of<br />

Ecological Risks from the Use of Atrazine. The meeting will be held<br />

on June 12-14, 2012, from 9 a.m. to approximately 5:30 p.m. and<br />

on June 15, 2012, from 9 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m.<br />

The Agency encourages that written comments be submitted by<br />

May 29, 2012, and requests for oral comments be submitted by<br />

June 5, 2012. However, written comments and requests to make<br />

oral comments may be submitted until the date of the meeting,<br />

but anyone submitting written comments after May 29, 2012,<br />

should contact the Designated Federal Official (DFO. Further<br />

Updates to the Lost Frogs list<br />

Species reported as Found: Isthmohyla tica, Odontophrynus<br />

moratoi, Incilius holdridgei, Craugastor fleischmanni, Centrolene<br />

heloderma and Litoria castanea.<br />

Species added to the Lost list: Atelopus senex and Craugastor andi<br />
