Compass Primary Health
Care Network
People think primary health care is going to the
doctor when you’re sick, but we also focus on
keeping people well. We work with medical
practices and community organisations, to ensure
that people can get to the doctor as well as other
events that promote health in the community.
Some of the things we can help with are:
• Helping you get to the doctor if money,
transport or language are a barrier
• Free exercise programmes in the community
Compass Primary Health Care Network has health
providers located in Wellington, Porirua and
Sports Clubs
There are plenty of reasons why getting off the
couch and into your sports gear is a good thing.
Our bodies are like cars; they need to move to
function well!
A Sports Club is an organisation that provides
sport specific opportunities for everyone in
the community. The opportunities range
from participation, officiating, coaching and
administration.

Every sport can teach you something different:
Football (footwork and foot speed), Cricket
(eye-hand coordination), Netball (agility), Tennis
(shoulder movement), Basketball (quickness),
Athletics (coordination and technique).
Benefits of sport
Regular exercise improves health and fitness.
Health is defined as a state of complete mental,
physical and social well-being; not merely
the absence of illness or infirmity. Fitness
is the ability to meet the demands of the
environment.
Mental, physical and social benefits include:
• improved confidence
• relief of stress/tension & stress related illness
• losing weight
• improved posture
• improved body shape
• meeting people
• making friends
Being a member of a sports club and regularly
participating in sport will develop personal
qualities from:
• Co-operation - working with others.
• Competition - testing yourself against others.
• Physical challenge - testing yourself against
the environment or your best performances.
• Aesthetic appreciation - recognizing quality
of movement in a performance.
To find a sports club in your neighbourhood use
the following sources of information:
• community notice boards at supermarkets,
community centres, pools
• your children’s school
• 0800 ACTIVE
• local newspapers
Or simply search the internet for the sport you
are interested in.
Push Play Getting Started?
Push Play aims to encourage people to fit sport
and recreation into their day.
Life is busy, but it’s worth making time to Push
Play. Just 30 minutes of moderate physical activity
for adults, and 60 minutes for children, most days
of the week is all you need to help improve your
health.
For more information on how to Push Play in
Wellington contact Sport Wellington at
380 2070 or visit
www.sportwellington.org.nz/pushplay.
We all know (and research proves) that getting
out, getting active and getting creative really is
good for our health and well-being. It also makes
the day go better. Trouble is, when money is tight,
when we’re feeling stressed or low, it’s so much
harder to get started.
So if you’re finding it hard to get on with
something you know will bring joy and health to
your life today try this:
• Prioritise - make it a priority in your life, it’s
about your health and well-being
• Fun - choose something that you know will be
fun for you
• Go with a friend - it’s always easier!
• Check it’s at the right level for you - you want
to feel challenged not exhausted
• Go easy on yourself - try again tomorrow if it
doesn’t work out today
Volunteer Wellington
Volunteer Wellington Te Puna Tautoko is the
champion of volunteering in Wellington. We are
the place to go to find an interesting, exciting and
challenging role in the community sector. We
work with 400+ community organisations who
list their volunteering positions on our database.
These are as varied and different as the groups
represented.
You can take up positions such as administration,
tutoring, driving, advocating, mentoring,
befriending, supporting, writing, designing,
sewing, painting, environmental planting...and
many, many more.
People come to Volunteer Wellington to find a
volunteering role to meet new people, make new
friends, develop new skills, find a new direction...
have fun and sometimes just to ‘get out of the
house’.
Quotes:
‘When I first went to Volunteer Wellington I was
fussy about what I wanted. I had been very sick so
I had to find a place nearby home. But I wanted
to get my foot in the door. They were patient
and nice. Now I’ve come to Mana Recovery. I love
the people I’m working alongside and I love the
managers... when I go home I talk about this place
all the time.’ Matawai
‘When I got involved with the statistics project at
Volunteer Wellington I was able to work freely and
use my skills. I felt very much satisfied. I came
in contact with the community sector. Now I feel
connected to people and comfortable with the
people of New Zealand.’ Revati
