Superb weather, a variety of rides to choose
from, wineries, eateries, an ideal location and
a very friendly group of cyclists made for another
successful Easter cycling weekend in Clare.
The group ranged in age from 10 and a half
week old Ayliffe to one of the regular Easter riders
nearing 80 years of age!
There were rides from the 2 km to the skate
park, 4 km ride to Melrose Park, the 115 km
bitumen all day challenge out to Yacka, Brinkworth
and Spalding, Mintaro and Martindale Hall, a ride
to Burra, the entire Riesling Trail from Auburn to
Barinia, Blyth, a ‘winery crawl’ and the favourite
Easter egg hunt and night rides.
The group of Easter campers were from
Victoria, New South Wales, Northern Territory,
USA and South Australia, some of whom have
been to at least 10 previous Easter camps!
Mayor Aughey of the Gilbert & Clare Valleys
Council gave a spirited welcome to the group on
Friday evening. Although he was later presented
with a cycling jersey, the Mayor mentioned that
it might be some time yet before he could be
persuaded to ride a bike.
The Bicycle SA volunteers and staff were
integral to the success of the weekend and
are to be thanked and congratulated for their
efforts, from logistics, ride marshals and leaders,
refreshments, lunches, registrations, maintenance
and security. The volunteer and staff group
included:
Richard Brandt: ride marshal
As one rider was heard to say towards the end
of the weekend ‘where has the weekend gone,
no sooner than I have pitched my tent, it is time to
pack up and go home.’ Such is the unique nature
of these Easter weekends.
