Self-Injury<br />

Any <strong>student</strong> who harms or threatens to harm herself or<br />

another will be referred immediately to a physician or<br />

counselor for assessment. The <strong>student</strong> will be allowed<br />

to return to campus only with written documentation<br />

from the physician or counselor in a form acceptable to<br />

the <strong>College</strong> that states it is safe for her to do so and<br />

after meeting with a <strong>Meredith</strong> <strong>College</strong> Counseling Center<br />

counselor. The <strong>student</strong> will be allowed to return to campus<br />

when the vice president of <strong>student</strong> development<br />

gives approval. The <strong>College</strong> reserves the right to request<br />

an opinion from another counselor or physician at its<br />

expense to determine the <strong>student</strong>’s fitness to return to<br />

campus. Students may appeal any denial of any return<br />

to campus by submitting a written appeal and stating<br />

the grounds for such appeal to the vice president for<br />

<strong>student</strong> development within five (5) business days of<br />

the <strong>College</strong>’s decision. The vice president for <strong>student</strong><br />

development will submit the <strong>student</strong>’s written appeal<br />

along with any position she may have to the president<br />

who will make a decision within five (5) business days<br />

of the appeal. The president’s decision shall be final.<br />

At any time parents of the <strong>student</strong> involved and appropriate<br />

<strong>College</strong> officials may be notified at the discretion<br />

of the vice president for <strong>student</strong> development or other<br />

personnel on duty. Additionally, if a <strong>student</strong> withdraws<br />

or takes a temporary leave of absence after referral and<br />

removal from campus, she still must comply with the<br />

above requirements before resuming enrollment.<br />

Intra-Campus Mail Service<br />

Intra-Campus Mail Services are provided for the convenience<br />

of <strong>Meredith</strong> <strong>student</strong>s and organizations. Only<br />

<strong>Meredith</strong> organizations may use the intra-campus mail<br />

distribution. All <strong>student</strong> organizations must secure<br />

approval from the director of <strong>student</strong> activities and<br />

leadership development to use <strong>Meredith</strong> campus mail<br />

(Post Office) and commuter mail pockets for information<br />

distribution.<br />

Jurisdiction of the <strong>College</strong><br />

Students are expected to maintain at all times a high<br />

standard of personal conduct in keeping with <strong>Meredith</strong><br />

principles. The <strong>College</strong> reserves the right to exclude,<br />

suspend or expel at any time any <strong>student</strong> whose academic<br />

standing or conduct is regarded by <strong>Meredith</strong> as<br />

undesirable or unacceptable.<br />

Lake<br />

Near the Elva Bryan McIver Amphitheater is a lovely<br />

setting with a small lake—one of <strong>Meredith</strong>’s well-known<br />

landmarks. Many <strong>Meredith</strong> <strong>student</strong>s find the lake area<br />

perfect for study, quiet conversation, relaxation, or<br />

contemplation. Social events, such as picnics, are often<br />

held there, as are more official gatherings, such as<br />

Class Day and graduation exercises.<br />

Use of the lake area is discouraged at night for security<br />

reasons. Swimming in the lake is prohibited.<br />

<strong>Meredith</strong> Seal and Wordmark<br />

The Marketing and Communications Office oversees<br />

the <strong>College</strong>’s Graphic Identity Program and maintains<br />

a program manual that provides specific information<br />

on proper use of the visual identity elements.<br />

<strong>Meredith</strong>’s seal is the official symbol of the <strong>College</strong><br />

and should be used formally on <strong>College</strong>-wide event<br />

programs, documents, diplomas, certificates, and<br />

programs for official functions (convocations or commencement).<br />

The seal was designed in 1909 by Ida<br />

Poteat, professor of art, 1899-1940. Below the band<br />

running diagonally across the shield are pines symbolizing<br />

the State of North Carolina. The lighted torch illustrates<br />

<strong>Meredith</strong>’s motto, the single word LUX, meaning<br />

light—the light of the mind and the light of the soul.<br />

The <strong>Meredith</strong> <strong>College</strong> wordmark, redesigned in 1993 by<br />

the Marketing and Communications design staff, is the<br />

official identifier for the <strong>College</strong>. It should be used as<br />

designed and always should be reproduced from authorized<br />

art work, which is available in the Marketing and<br />

Communications Office. The wordmark and the seal<br />

may be printed in either black or PANTONE 201 burgundy.<br />

Use of departmental or other individualized<br />

logos is prohibited. Incorporating this wordmark, the<br />

<strong>College</strong> has adopted exact specifications for letterhead,<br />

envelopes, business cards, and other components of<br />

<strong>Meredith</strong>’s official stationery program.<br />

Off-Campus Events<br />

All college policies as stated in the <strong>Meredith</strong> Student<br />

Handbook shall be followed at all off-campus events<br />

sponsored by <strong>Meredith</strong>. <strong>Meredith</strong> <strong>student</strong>s are expected<br />

to represent the <strong>College</strong> with dignity at all times. An<br />

“off-campus, <strong>College</strong>-sponsored function” is any event<br />

or activity held off of campus grounds that is organized<br />

and hosted by <strong>Meredith</strong> <strong>College</strong> or a recognized campus<br />

organization(s). “<strong>College</strong>-sponsored” means that<br />

<strong>Meredith</strong> <strong>College</strong> is aware of and has approved the<br />

event or activity. “Recognized campus organization(s)”
