Ski and Alpine Wellness in 

Adelboden Frutigen 

A hike on a lonely ridge; an initiation into the secret art of cheese production with an alpine herdsman; 

the adrenaline kick of a jump from the bridge in the Rehärti Adventure Park; discovering the 210 km of 

pistes in the Adelboden-Lenk ski region or just enjoying a fondue in the unique atmosphere of the spacious 

igloo on the Engstligenalp. In both summer and winter there are countless activities in Adelboden 

with something to suit every taste. Whether on foot, with the electric FLYER bike, on skis or on a scooter, 

Adelboden provides fun and variety. Even when the weather is bad, Adelboden is never boring. Among 

the most popular indoor activities are the cinema Rex and the new Tropic House in Frutigen. The Local 

Heritage Museum and the book and games library are well worth a visit. Sports fans will enjoy the ice 

sports centre in Adelboden and the indoor swimming pool in Frutigen. 

You are spoilt for choice as far as accommodation is concerned in Adelboden. Whether you prefer to sleep 

in a hay loft or the uniqueness of a design hotel, a four star superior hotel with great spa facilities or a 

campsite, Adelboden has it all. 

Adelboden’s Alpine School employs qualified local mountain guides and offers various tours and courses 

for a very special way to experience the natural winter wonders. The winter programme includes guided 

ski and snowboard tours, snowshoe hikes, overnight stays in an igloo, ice climbing, avalanche and deep 

snow courses, as well as the organisation of company events. The Snow Sports School in Adelboden offers 

a great choice of courses for children, young people, and adults. With a bit of luck, you might even 

be put in the group taught by Switzerland’s best looking ski instructor! 

Tip 

The Sports and Leisure Arena should open in Winter 2010/2011. It 

will feature a restaurant, bowling alley, climbing garden, ice field and 

curling hall – all great fun whatever the weather. 

In Spring 2010 Adelboden’s Alpine Spa is due to begin construction. 

This will be the start of a new chapter of spa and health tourism 

for Adelboden, and the Alpine Spa – with its world of water, health, 

and meditation – promises to be a fascinating experience.

The Magical Mountain World 

at Kandersteg 

In Kandersteg you can experience the high Bernese Alps up close. The snow-capped peaks surround the 

valley and offer tempting activities, some of them relaxing, others more thrilling! In summer, you have the 

choice of mountain hikes of varying degrees of difficulty, adventures on the via ferrata, or a try at mountain 

climbing. At the Blue Lake, Reichenbach, or in the idyllic Kien Valley, you will find peace and quiet and 

lots of fresh air. 

In winter, Kandersteg has all the fun in the snow: here you will find an extensive network of winter walking 

trails and one of Switzerland’s largest cross-country ski areas as well as snowshoeing routes, toboggan 

runs, and a family-friendly ski area. Kandersteg is easy to reach by public or private transport. 

In addition, the village has kept its typical Bernese Oberland character – an attempt to cultivate alpine 

culture, just what Lenk is known for. 

Tip 

The idyllic Kien Valley, the wonderful area around Lake Oeschinen, and 

the magical Gastern Valley are part of the «Unesco World Heritage Site 

Swiss Alps». This refers to an alpine area of incomparable beauty, 

shrouded in legend, and virtually untouched. The region is well worth 

a visit in summer and in winter.

Alpine Culture in the 

Lenk-Simme Valley 

The Simme Valley is the home of the world famous Simmentaler spotted cow. Alpine culture, traditions, 

and customs are purposefully cultivated here. Among the highlights of the summer season in the mountains 

is the Lenk Älplerfest (mountain festival) with its farmers’ market and the procession of cows in St. 

Stephan. In summer, the Simme Valley is a valley of water and a walkers’ paradise. The source of the Simme 

River, and the Iffig Waterfall are well-known beauty spots. There are many varied activities for families in 

Lenk too, such as the children’s entertainment programme, the marmot and lynx trail in summer, and the 

Stoss children’s world in winter. Together with Adelboden, Lenk forms part of the winter sports arena 

«Adelboden-Lenk… dänk!». This area includes 72 lifts and 210 km of pistes. Beginners can appreciate 

the wide pistes while advanced skiers and boarders can take advantage of the more demanding descents. 

This is typical of the Bernese Oberland: lots of contrasts in a small area. It is not very far from the alpine 

culture in Lenk to the city culture one can find in Thun. 

Tip 

The Simme Valley’s agricultural roots have always characterised the 

valley. A visit to a farming family allows an interesting glimpse into this 

world and everyday life on a farm – and is popular with guests of all 

ages. Several farms in the Simme Valley offer guided visits all year

Culture and Nature 

on Lake Thun 

The Lake Thun region offers a combination of city charm and natural wonders. In the morning you can stroll 

around the picturesque old town of Thun and, in the afternoon, immerse yourself in the magical mountain 

world. Lovely hills and steep peaks surround Lake Thun. The area is ideal for hiking and cycling. Those who 

like to take it a bit easier can just take the cable car or funicular to the summit and enjoy the wonderful views 

from there. The glistening surface of the lake will tempt you to take to the water. Here sports fans will certainly 

get their money’s worth, as will day trippers enjoying a relaxing trip on a ship. Cultural events in Thun 

regularly attract visitors from near and far. On one of Europe’s most beautiful lake stages, exhilarating musicals 

are performed each summer. The Lake Thun region also includes pretty villages along the lake and in 

the hills, characterised by the traditional wooden houses that are typical of the character of the whole Bernese 

Oberland region. 

Tip 

Nature, tradition and the modern age live harmoniously together in 

Thun. The largest city in the Bernese Oberland has attractions for every 

kind of weather: perhaps a visit to Castle Hill, the fairytale castle of 

Schadau, the wonderful parks along the shores of the lake or the historic 

Thun Panorama – and, of course, the incomparable natural surroundings 

of Lake Thun and the Alps.

Nowhere is the scenery above Lake Thun, with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau,

After the spectacular trip on the funicular to the viewing platform at 2362 m

St. Beatus Caves – A Fabulous World of Caves 

Experience the unique world of the Beatus Caves in the Bernese Oberland. Here you will find 1000 

metres of illuminated caves full of stalactites and stalagmites, a park with a waterfall, a prehistoric 

settlement, the cell where Saint Beatus lived, a little house of fables, the Caves Museum with special 

exhibitions, and a play area with a dragon slide. 

The caves are open from Palm Sunday until the third Sunday in October.

Diemtig Valley Summer… the Regional Nature Reserve! 

Enjoy the proximity to nature of this wonderful landscape that has been deemed to be ‘of national signifi - 

cance’. The splendour of the meadows covered with such a variety of flowers, the clear rushing streams, 

and the beautiful backdrop of the mountains distinguish this Bernese Oberland mountain valley. 

The cable cars Wiriehorn and Grimmialp will take you comfortably up into the glorious alpine world where 

you can enjoy a mountain, valley, or panoramic walk. There is a good range of bike trails on the Wiriehorn 

to give all levels, from families to downhill experts, a fabulous experience. 

On the Grimmimutz trail, kids can have fun with the exciting story of Grimmimutz and play at different 

game points along the way while they are discovering the beauty of nature. 

Diemtig Valley Winter… varied – near – Great Value 

In the cold, starry nights, snow settles on the mountains and meadows of the Diemtig Valley. The first rays 

of sun mark the start of a beautiful winter day. Take a breath of the fresh air, recharge your batteries and 

set out to discover the three family-friendly winter sports areas, Wiriehorn, Grimmialp and Springenboden. 

Here you will find a friendly atmosphere, easy access, modern transport, snow making machines, free parking, 

reasonable prices, and lots of variety. Our highlights: 6-man chairlift and toboggan run on the 

Wiriehorn, 3-man chairlift, and natural ice rink on the Grimmialp, snow-shoe trail at Springenboden, as well 

as winter walking and tobogganing across the whole valley.

Tropical Atmosphere – Culinary Delights 

In the Tropic House at Frutigen, you can experience a varied exhibition covering the origins of mountain 

water and the use of its warmth. Instead of cooling artificially, mountain water is used to grow exotic fruits 

and to rear warm water fish. Here you will find the first sturgeon breeding and caviar production facility 

in Switzerland. In addition, the BKW interactive energy park demonstrates the use of all types of renewable 

energy. After a walk through the sturgeon breeding area and the tropical plantation, enjoy the delicacies 

of the Tropic House in our restaurants and bar. The restaurant provides an ideal atmosphere for private 

or company events. The restaurant (no entrance fee) is also open in the evening.

Sport and fun? There is a huge variety: walking and biking routes, tennis, minigolf, open-air and lake swimming 

pools or a trip on a sailboat. You can also discover Spiez on a relaxing trip on the Little Spiez Train.

planets are presented through information boards with short descriptions. The information can be downloaded 

from the internet as a podcast and listened to on an iPod or MP3 player. In addition, the information

There are five to six large temporary exhibitions annually. They cover current emotive topics and are 

designed to be thought provoking. Contemporary art is presented with a connection to art from the past. 

Young and old, adults and children, skilled artists and those new to art, all come to the Art Museum. There 

are special events here on a regular basis including guided tours, discussions of works, debates and 

lectures which complement the programme of exhibitions.

Abegg Foundation – Precious Textiles from all over the World 

The Abegg Foundation houses one of the most valuable textile collections in the world. Here, close to Bern 

and Thun, fabrics and crafts from Europe, the Mediterranean, and the area of the silk routes from ancient 

times to 1800, are preserved. 

The exhibition room of the Abegg Foundation is due to receive a new look and will be extended. Because 

of these building works there will be no special exhibition in 2010. The Museum and Villa Abegg will 

remain closed until spring 2011.

Flower bedecked Wooden Granaries in Magical Scenery 

The «Spycherweg» (Granaries Path) leads through the expansive parish of Heiligenschwendi and takes 

you to 11 granaries and oven houses. Walking time is approximately 2½ to 3 hours. Information boards 

at the granaries will tell you about these little rustic wooden houses. Documentation and maps are available 

in the hotels and in the tourist information office. 

Thun Panorama – the Oldest Panorama in the World 

The first and the oldest Swiss circular painting still preserved in the world (painted by Marquard Wocher 

between 1808 and 1814) provides an intimate look at the living rooms, classrooms, and alleyways of the 

early 19 th century.

The castle was built between 1861 and 1863 in the historicist style and
