Plymouth's Fall Fest
has something for all
There'll be something for everyone
at the 1991 Plymouth Fall Festival.
Here are some highlights:
• Fire Safety House — The city of
Plymouth's Volunteer Firefighters will
make education fun for youngsters at
their exhibit. Children of all ages will
be welcomed and taught about the importance
of knowing what to do in case
of fire. The Fire Safety House will be
. on Main- Street at the corner of Penniman.
Safety demonstrations will be
- from 4-10 p.m. Friday; from noon to 10
• p.m. Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m.
s. Sunday.
• Dunk Tank — Here's your
chance to get even with folks about
town drafted for "dunkee" duty. Spon
sored by the Plymouth Salem Rock
ettes, the dunk tank will see action
from 6-9 p.m. Friday, from noon to
8:30 p.m. Saturday and from 17:30
p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
— • Hockey Shoot — Show your
prowess and let the NHL hear about
•it! For $1. you can shoot the puck
three times and have your speed
clocked by the Plymouth-Canton
Hockey Association.
• Antique Show — Antique dealers
from across the country will set up
their wares at the Plymouth Cultural
Center at Farmer and. Theodore
streets behind Central Middle School.
Sponsored by the Plymouth Symphony
League, the show will be from 10
a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m.
to 6 p.m. Friday.
• Produce Tent — Come see the
best of Plymouth's harvest at the
Trailwood Garden Club's produce tent
on the Central Middle School grounds
Sunday. Fruits and vegetables will be
on display and ready for judging.
• Art in Kellogg Park — The
Three Cities Art Club will sponsor its
popular annual display in Kellogg
Park. The event will be Saturday and
Sunday near the corner of Main Street
and Ann Arbor Trail.
Food booths offer
variety at Fall Fest
Plymouth's Fall Festival would be a
bore without its booths. Here's what's
on tap for the 1991 edition.
• Plymouth-Canton Vietnam Veterans
of America. Chapter 528 will feature
steamed corn on the cob. watermelon.
and hat pins. T-shirts and
bumper stickers. —
• The Plymouth Theater Guild will
staff the cotton candy wagon.
• Plymouth Salem High School's
sophomore class will drive festivalgoers
nuts as the aroma of spiced
roasted almonds wafts through the air.
• The Salem High School class of
"92 will offer'pizza and pop.
• Polish Centennial Dancers.
P.N.A. Lodge 3240 will cook up a variety
of ethnic dishes.
• Plymouth Township Police will
pass along information on crime prevention.
• The Plymouth Optimist Club
booth will have balloons, infiatables
and children's toys.
• New Morning School's booth will
feature carnival games.
• Nativity of the Virgin Mary
Church members will serve shish
kebabs. Greek pastry, coffee and pop.
• The theme for the University of
Michigan Health Center of Plymouth
will be children's safety.
• The Kiwanis Club of Plymouth
will serve pop and popcorn from its
popcorn wagon.
• 1 CARE school folks will showcase
computer software.
a First Baptist Church will offer
books for sale.
• The Plymouth-Catnon Civitan
Club will feature photo buttons and
yaki tori steak sandwiches.
a The Plymouth Community
Chamber of Commerce will offer luminaries
and caps.
a The Centennial Educational
Park National Honor Society will sel!
Italian ice.
a The Canton Executive Forum
will offer ice cream.
a The Canton Student Council,
class of '94. will feature hot pretzels

Fall Festival's roots were in picnic

Thirty-five years ago. members
of the Plymouth Rotary Club
decided it would be nice to
host a community picnic at
Hamilton Park.
The idea was to raise money to buy
playground equipment for children
who used the park. Rotarians served
up 500 chicken dinners at their oneday
event at Hamilton Park, which
ironically is now known as Jaycee
Park.
Little did the Rotarians know what
they'd started.
Five hundred dinners would amount
to a drop in the bucket at the modernday
Plymouth Fall Festival, which
evolved from that chicken dinner in
1956.
It's expected that 12.000 plates of
barbecue chicken will be served up
Sunday. Sept. 8. the last day of the
festival. The event gets under way
Thursday. Sept. 5.
The fall fest is sponsored by local
non-profit organizations and coordinated
by the volunteer Plymouth Community
Fall Festival board of directors.
Proceeds are used to fund charitable
activities sponsored by the community's
non-profit organizations.
Fall Festival President Zan Kafila
says the 36th annual festival will feature
everything last year's did. "hopefully
improved upon.
"We have some wonderful entertainment
coming up. Due to the generosity
of the eight car dealers in the area, we
were able to provide some real quality
entertainment. It's wonderful, considering
that economic times haven't
been so good." said Kafila. who
succeeds her husband Gene as festival
president. The Kafilas are the second
couple to have served in the volunteer
office. First were Sue and Larry McElroy.

"Twenty-seven local merchants c(fn
tributed funds to help us with our expenses.
Response was terrific.' she
said.
The Plymouth Fall Festival is put
on without the involvement of commercial
entities, she added. "We are
the only festival totally run by volunteers.
The volunteers represent the
service clubs for which they volunteer,"
she said.
"Because we are not professionals in
doing this, we have to rely on our instinct
and hope to do a job." said Kafila.

and dance band." Innovation will play
in Kellogg Park beginning at about
6.30 p.m. Friday.
"Saturday night we have Bob Ehi
rant's Big Band They're terrific, too
said Kafila-. The Step-Brothers will
play "50s and '60s music.
"We're going to have the Tim
O'Hare Irish Dancers Saturday, and
contemporary music following them
late in the afternoon
"Well have the Polish Centennial
Dancers Saturday afternoon and again
tn smatt groups performing in and
around the park area
•THURSDAY NIGHT is tagged as
senior citizens' night." she add*d
"We'll have the Canton Seniors Kitch
en Band, and the Felicity Strings, who
play dulcimers. The Plymouth Community
Band also will perform Thursday.
"We'll have more entertainers strolling
around the park this year. On Sunday
we will have the Sweet Adelines,
and on Saturday, the Dixieland
Band." she said.
"On Saturday and Sunday, we'll
have the Clowns Around Redford and
gymnastics demonstrations- A dance
troupe called Sidekicks and karate experts
will do demonstrations Saturday
and Sunday We'll nave speakers set
up on Main Street to project the sound

all over the park.
"It's going to be fun The board this
year has been very organized and has
worked hard." added Kafila Kafila
also had praise for residents and businesses
who good-naturedly put up with
disruption caused by the festival.
"The festival manager, Joe Bida.
and the assistant festival manager, his
son John Bida. have gone above and
beyond with the things they're doing."
