The John’s Folly Learning Institute is hosting an old-fashioned St.
John pig roast and fish fry on Saturday, July 11, from noon to midnight
at Sputnik’s in Coral Bay.
The event will raise funds for students to travel to the 75th Anniversary
festivities of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The group
is hoping to raise $10,000 to cover the cost of the trip for up to 10 students.
perienced yet, explained Doeling.
“There would be individual
events in the morning and team
events in the afternoon,” he
said. “We’re going to have different
stations and the kids will
have to go through all of the
stations. So they’ll get to experience
each sport.”
Doeling is looking for volunteers
and athletes to help out
for the Just Play Day as well as
businesses to help ensure that
the day is a success.
“We would like to get businesses
to donate anything from
chairs to whistles to anything
that can help us put on a more
successful event,” Doeling said.
“We’re working on getting Tshirts
for volunteers and kids
and we’ll have prizes for all the
participants as well.”
While USFSC is still in its
initial stages, Doeling has set
up a website which has attracted
a lot of publicity, he explained.
“After about six months, I
started to see some amazing results
trickle in,” said Doeling.
“I’m getting a lot of people
who come upon my website
who are huge fans of St. John
and many of them have offered
their services.”
“Two teenage girls in Delaware
said they love St. John
and wanted to know what they
could do to give back to the
community that has given so
much to them,” he said. “They
volunteered to do two bake
sales and donated the funds to
get sports balls shipped to St.
John.”
All donations to USFSC are
used to ship sports equipment
to St. John, Doeling added. For
“Have fun and enjoy our hospitality.
Remember to bring your dancing
In her first St. John Village
Opening ceremony in years, Delegate
to Congress Donna Christensen
congratulated Penn and expressed
her pleasure at being at the
festivities.
“I’m usually in D.C. still at this
time, so it’s really fun to be here
tonight,” said Christensen. “It’s a
nice place to relax with the warm
community here. I love coming to
St. John.”
“There is a great spirit of fellowship
and love here tonight and
a lot of that has to do with Mr.
Penn,” Christensen said. “Let this
celebration be all about love in
Love City.”
Christensen presented Penn
with a Congressional Certificate in
recognition of his honor.
Lieutenant Governor Gregory
Francis invited the crowd to get
close to the stage.
“This is your village, come forward,”
said Francis. “It’s all about
having a good time. If someone
bumps you, say, ‘Let’s bump together.’”
from local chefs at the many
booths.
“I love opening night of Village,”
said Toni Lacer. “You’ve
just got to be here.”
“I love Festival and I’m happy
to be home to enjoy it,” said Alvis
Christian.
