Long-time Resident Alan Smith
Sworn In as Magistrate Judge
By Jaime Elliott
St. John Tradewinds
Long-time St. John resident Alan Smith was sworn
in as a Magistrate Judge for the V.I. Superior Court
system on Tuesday, June 30, in a historic ceremony at
the Alexander Farrelly Justice Center.
The Magistrate Division was established in 2007
and last week’s appointees were the first implantation
of the division. Along with Smith, Kathleen Mackay
was sworn in for the St. Thomas/St. John district and
Jessica Gallivan and Miguel Camacho were sworn in
for the St. Croix division.
Smith, a former Chief Public Defender and First
Assistant Attorney General and Commissioner of
Planning and Natural Resources, will serve at least a
four-year term as Magistrate Judge before he’s up for
reappointment. Smith’s wife Magda was at this side
during the ceremony.
The Magistrate Division was established to help
the V.I. Superior Court in providing efficient and
timely resolution of disputes.
