chosen because it describes our endeavor<br />

to build mach<strong>in</strong>es with acutt<strong>in</strong>gedge<br />

technology, guarantee<strong>in</strong>g utmost<br />

efficiency, reliability and durability. For<br />

our customers, a quick return on<br />

goal, it is of vital importance that <strong>the</strong><br />

purchased mach<strong>in</strong>e performs well from<br />

day one. <strong>SML</strong> keeps its promises. With<br />

an impeccable track record, <strong>the</strong><br />

superior performance of <strong>SML</strong> <strong>extrusion</strong><br />

and has helped our company to<br />

achieve asusta<strong>in</strong>ed growth rate. And<br />

to our clients, hav<strong>in</strong>g amach<strong>in</strong>e supplier<br />

who offers <strong>in</strong>novative solutions<br />

and at <strong>the</strong> same time is able to take <strong>the</strong><br />

risk out of <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>vestment is an<br />

absolute advantage to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

<strong>EcoCompact</strong> is a<strong>new</strong> and <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

product of <strong>SML</strong> -eng<strong>in</strong>eered to perform.<br />

consum<strong>in</strong>g lesser energy than any<br />

comparable mach<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

The <strong>EcoCompact</strong> launched and demonstrated<br />

live at <strong>the</strong> K-show <strong>in</strong><br />

Düsseldorf is targeted to be <strong>the</strong> match<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>in</strong> today’s competitive world of<br />

<strong>stretch</strong> <strong>film</strong>. Youdon’t believe it? Come<br />

and see it for yourself. <strong>SML</strong> keeps its<br />

promises, doesn’t it?<br />

Yours s<strong>in</strong>cerely<br />

The current success of <strong>SML</strong> <strong>stretch</strong><br />

<strong>film</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es has prompted us to design a<br />

<strong>new</strong>, standardized mach<strong>in</strong>e with a<br />

price-performance ratio that is second<br />

to none. Our prime objectives were to<br />

build a l<strong>in</strong>e that would offer a large<br />

number of features and thus be of <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

to as many customers as possible,<br />

while reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> price by means<br />

of standardization.<br />

The <strong>new</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e produces 4 x 500mm<br />

<strong>stretch</strong> <strong>film</strong>s with anet production capacity<br />

of around 1,200 kg/h and runs<br />

at speeds <strong>in</strong> excess of 600 m/m<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Besides, as space is at apremium <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry, its components are arranged<br />

on two levels, which m<strong>in</strong>imizes<br />

<strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e footpr<strong>in</strong>t. With <strong>the</strong> extruders,<br />

air-conditioned e-cab<strong>in</strong>ets and water<br />

pumps on <strong>the</strong> upper level, we have<br />

been able to compress <strong>the</strong> floor space<br />

requirement to amere 140 sq m, which<br />

Hygiene<br />

is ahealthy<br />

market<br />

is only half <strong>the</strong> room needed by a<br />

conventional <strong>stretch</strong> <strong>film</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e. Besides,<br />

it must also be stressed that no compromises<br />

have been made with regard<br />

to <strong>the</strong> amount and<br />

dimensions of <strong>the</strong><br />

equipment <strong>in</strong>stalled,<br />

or <strong>the</strong> proven quality<br />

of <strong>SML</strong> components.<br />

More features for <strong>SML</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>rmoformed sheet l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

The production methods used for <strong>the</strong><br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g of PS and PP <strong>the</strong>rmoformed<br />

sheet have been well established<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry s<strong>in</strong>ce decades. In<br />

spite of <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> scope of<br />

applications and raw material selection<br />

do not show major progress, <strong>the</strong> volume<br />

of material consumption rema<strong>in</strong>s at a<br />

very high level. Therefore, successful<br />

processors deliver superior product<br />

quality and focus on efficient production.<br />

New <strong>extrusion</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es have to be more<br />

efficient and must satisfy future quality<br />

expectations. Standardization would be<br />

desirable, but <strong>in</strong> practical terms, l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

have to <strong>in</strong>corporate <strong>in</strong>dividual features.<br />

They need to be tailored to <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

<strong>SML</strong> -your research centre for<br />

photovoltaic <strong>film</strong> and sheet<br />

In recent years, <strong>SML</strong> has ga<strong>in</strong>ed vast<br />

experience <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> design of <strong>extrusion</strong><br />

l<strong>in</strong>es for different types of <strong>film</strong>s used <strong>in</strong><br />

requirements on sheet width, thickness<br />

range, layer configuration, output, space<br />

availability and w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g technology if not<br />

operated <strong>in</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e with a <strong>the</strong>rmoformer.<br />

<strong>SML</strong> meets <strong>the</strong>se requirements by<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g modular design and superior<br />

components, which provides more features<br />

and greater efficiency.<br />

Our <strong>new</strong> air knife, which is fully <strong>in</strong>tegrated<br />

<strong>in</strong>to our successful horizontal roll<br />

stack, allows rapid changes from calender<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> cast mode. The polish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

roll (C0) is locked <strong>in</strong> an open position<br />

and this enables <strong>the</strong> 3-axis adjustment<br />

mechanism to move <strong>the</strong> air knife <strong>in</strong>to an<br />

optimum sett<strong>in</strong>g for cast<strong>in</strong>g. Moreover,<br />

electrical height adjustment of <strong>the</strong> roll<br />

Roll stack <strong>in</strong> air knife operation<br />

stand creates an advantageous cast<strong>in</strong>g<br />

position with more than 230°(!) of sheet<br />

wrap on <strong>the</strong> centre roll (C1). Us<strong>in</strong>g our<br />

far-reach<strong>in</strong>g experience <strong>in</strong> cast <strong>film</strong>, we<br />

have thus been able to raise typical<br />

production speeds by 25% without<br />

any impact on <strong>the</strong> calender<strong>in</strong>g mode,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> air knife is parked beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

post-cool<strong>in</strong>g rolls as required for top<br />

performance. At high l<strong>in</strong>e speeds, we<br />

hence better surface quality <strong>in</strong> tandem<br />

with high output.<br />

<strong>film</strong>s, require agreat knowledge of application<br />

technology, <strong>in</strong>order to ensure<br />

excellent product quality for <strong>the</strong> <strong>film</strong><br />

producer. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly,<br />

<strong>SML</strong> has<br />

developed customized<br />

solutions<br />

based on proven<br />

processes and<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>e components<br />

such as <strong>the</strong><br />

sleeve-touch technology.<br />

The competition<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> photovoltaic<br />

market is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

And <strong>in</strong><br />

The th<strong>in</strong> shell roll design of <strong>SML</strong> calender<strong>in</strong>g<br />

rolls was orig<strong>in</strong>ally targeted<br />

on an <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cool<strong>in</strong>g performance<br />

of agiven roll diameter. However,<br />

we have also discovered that it enhances<br />

<strong>the</strong> sheet’s <strong>the</strong>rmoform<strong>in</strong>g properties,<br />

edge behaviour, transparency<br />

and w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g quality.<br />

All <strong>in</strong> all, <strong>the</strong> <strong>new</strong> <strong>SML</strong> High Speed Extruders,<br />

achoice of highly efficient roll<br />

stacks and an extensive selection of<br />

company-built w<strong>in</strong>ders mean that we<br />

can supply <strong>in</strong>novative and <strong>in</strong>tegrated<br />

solutions for virtually every requirements.<br />

Berthold DRÖGE, Technical Director<br />

<strong>the</strong> face of this challenge, our customers<br />

are be<strong>in</strong>g forced to develop<br />

<strong>new</strong> formulas and processes for <strong>film</strong>s,<br />

which allow higher module efficiency,<br />

longer service life and shorter process<strong>in</strong>g<br />

times (i.e. ultra fast cur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

EVA <strong>film</strong>s). In this situation, with our<br />

highly flexible laboratory l<strong>in</strong>e, which is<br />

equipped with a various production<br />

methods sleeve-touch module, an air<br />

knife calender<strong>in</strong>g roller, and acoat<strong>in</strong>g/<br />

lam<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g station, <strong>SML</strong> constitutes<br />

<strong>the</strong> perfect partner for both, product<br />

development and for <strong>extrusion</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es<br />

to realise <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>novative applications.<br />

Hygiene is ahealthy market<br />

The global market for hygiene products<br />

such as baby diapers, <strong>in</strong>cont<strong>in</strong>ence<br />

diapers and sanitary napk<strong>in</strong>s is<br />

expand<strong>in</strong>g rapidly and this has prompted<br />

acorrespond<strong>in</strong>g rise <strong>in</strong> demand<br />

for breathable <strong>film</strong>, breathable lam<strong>in</strong>ate,<br />

melt-embossed <strong>film</strong> and cloth-like<br />

lam<strong>in</strong>ate for use as backsheets. <strong>SML</strong><br />

is <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>ery market leader <strong>in</strong> this<br />

field and has developed its own l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

concepts specifically for <strong>the</strong>se products.<br />

Company competence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Production l<strong>in</strong>e for hygiene backsheet<br />

hygiene field is also mirrored <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

delivery of over twenty trendsett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

backsheet <strong>film</strong> and lam<strong>in</strong>ate l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong><br />

recent years.<br />

The products<br />

Breathable <strong>film</strong> generally has three<br />

layers based on aPEcompound conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

approximately 50% CaCO 3.The<br />

lowest <strong>film</strong> thickness is 15 g/m² and<br />

production speeds of 300 m/m<strong>in</strong> are<br />

available.<br />

The <strong>new</strong> HSE<br />

90/37 LD High<br />

Speed Extruder<br />

Recent developments have demonstrated<br />

<strong>the</strong> fundamental advantages<br />

of High Speed Extruders (HSE) for a<br />

number of suitable applications. These<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>es have now passed <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>in</strong>fancy stage and acceptance has<br />

been achieved <strong>in</strong> several <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />

branches.<br />

We have discovered that <strong>the</strong> HSE can<br />

also improve polymer properties. With<strong>in</strong><br />

extruders, polymers suffer from residence<br />

time at high temperatures and<br />

from accumulative shear <strong>in</strong> general.<br />

Although <strong>the</strong> HSE shears <strong>the</strong> material<br />

at ahigher rate, due to amuch smaller<br />

volume of polymer <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong><br />

time <strong>in</strong>volved is much shorter. This cut<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> residence time at high temperatures<br />

reduces <strong>the</strong>rmal degradation<br />

and it has been established that <strong>the</strong><br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>the</strong>se two effects is<br />

most advantageous with regard to<strong>the</strong><br />

higher quality of <strong>the</strong> end product. The<br />

HSE demands <strong>the</strong> screw design be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

adapted for <strong>the</strong> material, as <strong>the</strong> smaller<br />

process<strong>in</strong>g unit does not allow <strong>the</strong> compensation<br />

of poor screw design by <strong>the</strong><br />

addition or removal of heat through <strong>the</strong><br />

barrel. For <strong>the</strong> optimal process<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

polymers with different melt<strong>in</strong>g behaviour<br />

it is often required to use a<br />

separate screw design for each <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

polymer.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, <strong>in</strong>order to attract awide<br />

range of customers, who are search<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for more flexibility without screw<br />

changes, <strong>SML</strong> decided to f<strong>in</strong>d asuitable<br />

solution for an HSE that reacts <strong>in</strong> a<br />

more "forgiv<strong>in</strong>g" manner to different<br />

polymers.<br />

Breathable lam<strong>in</strong>ates are produced on<br />

<strong>the</strong> same l<strong>in</strong>e as breathable <strong>film</strong> and<br />

merely require <strong>the</strong> addition of an unw<strong>in</strong>d<br />

for <strong>the</strong> nonwoven and <strong>the</strong> "porous<br />

coat<strong>in</strong>g" station. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, <strong>SML</strong> has<br />

developed a <strong>new</strong> unw<strong>in</strong>d for cont<strong>in</strong>uous<br />

production at full speed capable<br />

to handle maximum roll diameters of<br />

1,500mm.<br />

Melt-embossed <strong>film</strong>s consist of three<br />

or five layers, <strong>the</strong> latter be<strong>in</strong>g ideal<br />

for m<strong>in</strong>imized <strong>film</strong> weights and high<br />

speeds. Related <strong>SML</strong> technology <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

<strong>the</strong> latest dry emboss<strong>in</strong>g process<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g which <strong>the</strong> <strong>film</strong> is processed<br />

<strong>in</strong> a nip between a cooled rubber<br />

roller and an embossed steel roller. The<br />

<strong>film</strong>s thus produced have thicknesses<br />

of 17-24 g/m² and production speeds<br />

can exceed 400 m/m<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Melt-embossed lam<strong>in</strong>ate production<br />

also simply requires <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallation of<br />

an unw<strong>in</strong>der for <strong>the</strong> nonwoven, which<br />

is lam<strong>in</strong>ated with <strong>the</strong> <strong>film</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g melt<br />

emboss<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The outlook<br />

Films and lam<strong>in</strong>ates will be pr<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong> up to 4colours and <strong>SML</strong> has<br />

already developed al<strong>in</strong>e concept with<br />

an <strong>in</strong>tegrated flexo pr<strong>in</strong>ter for this pur-<br />

HSE 90/37 LD<br />

This assignment has been fulfilled<br />

through <strong>the</strong> development of a"gentler"<br />

extruder based on a 90mm screw<br />

diameter. Us<strong>in</strong>g ascrew speed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

500rpm range toge<strong>the</strong>r with an extended<br />

barrel length, we have been<br />

able to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> specific output of<br />

<strong>the</strong> screw substantially, thus <strong>the</strong> process<strong>in</strong>g<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dow with <strong>the</strong> same screw<br />

opened up for awider range of MFI’S.<br />

For typical <strong>the</strong>rmoform<strong>in</strong>g grades, <strong>SML</strong><br />

can guarantee an output of more<br />

MDO unit for breathable <strong>film</strong><br />

pose, which will save costs and also<br />

pave <strong>the</strong> way for higher value products.<br />

Breathable <strong>film</strong> and lam<strong>in</strong>ate are used<br />

for premium products, while melt embossed<br />

<strong>film</strong> and cloth-like lam<strong>in</strong>ates<br />

are widely employed for standard products.<br />
