the eiksund connection – deepest road tunnel in the world In 2008, the Eiksund connection was opened on the west coast of Norway. The connection is 14,880 meters long, and the deepest point is 287 meters below sea level. SafeRoad was chosen as a main supplier. The world´s deepest tunnel requires the best of the best in rock support, and SafeRoad has in total supplied over 90,000 bolts to secure the tunnel. One of the types of bolts that was used was our patented CT-bolt. All bolts are treated with the unique CombiCoat ® surface treatment, which gives the bolts three times the lifespan of a hot-dip galvanized bolt. The connecting bridge and road have been secured with Ørsta bridge parapets, standard road railings and lighting columns. SafeRoad has also supplied bus shelters for the connection. The final result is an impressive connection between the mainland and the islands. 30 31
light neville street – an innovative solution The aim of Light Neville Street was to give Leeds a safer and out-ofthe-ordinary gateway to the city. The pioneering solution gives the 13,000 motorists and pedestrians, who use the road every day, a sound and light experience that really is different from anything else seen on a main road anywhere in Britain. SafeRoad was the main contractor in the project and joined forces with leading architects, engineers and acoustic experts to create a spectacular area. The tunnel was upgraded using innovative engineering and acoustic techniques, including sound- absorbing wall-panels and a new lighting scheme. The new lighting scheme, incorporating thousands of LEDs, has improved the light levels in the tunnel. Alongside this, an audio installation has been created to soften the traffic noise experienced in the tunnel. The volume is adjusted in line with the traffic volume at any time. This was a challenging project for SafeRoad, which needed all our skills in steel construction and electrical installation, but the result is an excellent and innovative solution. nordenga Bridge – the new landmark in oslo The Nordenga Bridge connects Bjørvika and the inner city of Oslo. The 306 meter long bridge is the new landmark in Oslo, and 15,000 to 20,000 cars pass the bridge every day. The bridge was designed by the architect Birger Heyerdahl, and is divided into one pedestrian lane and one traffic lane. SafeRoad was chosen to supply 2,000 meters of bridge parapets to the project. Due to the architectural design, the parapets had to be custom-made to fulfill both the esthetics of the project and meet the safety requirements. SafeRoad worked in close co- operation with the entrepreneur, architect and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration in designing and manufacturing the bridge parapets. The parapets are tested according to the H2 requirements for safety, and treated with CombiCoat ® to ensure longevity. The project shows SafeRoad’s ability to meet customers’ requirements for safety, design and longevity. 32 33
