Waratah Cervelo Super Series
NEWS
The Waratah Cervelo Super Series held over two weekends saw eight Sydney Uni Velo riders across
B, C and D grade compete for prizes, fame and glory. The first criterium was on Sunday the 6 th of
June at Eastern Creek Dragway and the second was on Monday the 14 th at the International
Regatta Centre in Penrith.
At Eastern Creek, a new force in Sydney cycling made its presence known, following weeks of
weather that scared off all but the hardiest of cycling souls. The SU Velo crew of Jonathan, Nolan,
Glenn, Lex, Nic and Bec fronted to a cold windy morning at Eastern Creek, reminiscent of early
spring in the Belgian badlands, complete with a faint whiff of municipal tip to tantalise riders and
spectators alike. The conditions caused concern early on, with the headwind at the back of the
course for riders to contend with. All SU Velo riders made their presence known in the bunch,
pulling turns on the front and helping to drive the pace until all but the strongest cracked. Or their
tyres did… on the last lap… bad luck Jonathan. Unfortunately no podium finishes for SU Velo
although Glenn McIntosh was unlucky in C grade to get overtaken in the final sprint but still finished
a very credible 5 th . Importantly all with valid tyres finished, and they finished with grace and class,
and in the best looking kit of anyone in the bunch. Well done all!
The following weekend in Penrith, the blue squadron rolled up with the intention of righting the
previous weeks results. With them they had the additional fire power of Barry and Mel to demoralise
the opposition. The Regatta Centre was a flat circuit with two long straights along the rowing
course, however the course had its own challenges in the form of narrow paths and a chicane
before the final straight. All SU Velo riders in B grade drew a nervous breath when, along the front
straight of the course a call of 'duck' rang through from the front of the peloton. Would Ride
Captain Nic Martin shake off recent avian bad luck and avoid this brazen attack? The duck was
successfully negotiated and all riders filed past incident free, much to the relief of all involved.
Again all SU Velo riders were amongst the action throughout the race with favourable results. Nic
Martin was victorious in B grade in a tactical move initiated a lap from the finish while back in the
field was DS Barry Doosey, rolling in a comfortable 24th (on the same time as the leaders) and was
later quoted as saying 'not bad for my own personal development year'. Glenn McIntosh
outsprinted C grade for a photo finish first proving his domination at the front through frame-busting
gluteal power.
Congratulations to all who competed, I’m sure this is a sign of things to come for Sydney Uni Velo
Club.
NSW Club Team Time Trial Championships
This weekend the NSW Club Team Time Trial Championships are being held north of Sydney at
Somersby with a record 110 teams entered. Good luck to the three SU Velo teams competing,
may you have a tail wind the entire 40km course.
Sports Focus Physio
Our sponsor Sports Focus Physio prides itself in providing specialised, individually tailored
physiotherapy treatments with a particular emphasis on sport specific treatments.
They are offering the following deal to SU Velo members: if you are a member of a health fund
that covers physiotherapy, Sports Focus Physio will cover the gap for you. So your out of pocket
expense for the visit will be $zero. If you're not a member of a health fund don't worry, a nominal
fee of $40 applies. This offer is limited, so if you have interest in getting some assistance in post
event recovery, or have any niggling problems, now could be a good time to look into seeing
the physio.
Rider of the Week
Each week we will be profiling a club member with the hope of gleaning something
new that you didn’t already know about them. Our profiles aim to take you under the
helmet, and you never know, next weeks profile may be you.
Riding since: I first got on a bike when “She Loves You” by the Beatles was no. 1
Rides a: Blue Trek with better wheels than I deserve, a Colnago C50 ditto; and if I’m
going to go sunny side up, I want to do it in style so have just bought a Scott time trial
bike – going downhill reminds me of being on a toboggan as a kid
Campag or Shimano? Shimano
Favourite Sydney ride: A sunny day out to Cape Solander
Cycling quote: “don’t forget to breathe’ – great coaching advice
What inspires you to get out of bed in the morning to go training? The mirror fogging up
What is something you never thought you’d understand about cycling until you started?
How cyclists climb steep hills – after watching the TT in the Giro I’m still wondering
Favourite caffeine dealer: Bourke St Bakery
Fastest time around Centennial Park: Yet to come
Worst excuse for missing a training ride: Got sand in my cleat
Any advice for our members? Think up a better excuse than that one
Fashion tips: Don’t listen to my fashion tips, and not on any account ever wear a time
trial helmet to Centennial Park
Little known fact about you: I once played a rugby international for Kuwait
Where will we find you when you’re not on your bike: Asleep
