Introduction to Track Cycling
NEWS
On Saturday 28th August, SU Velo will be holding an introduction to track cycling at Dunc Gray
velodrome. It will offer an opportunity to see what all the fuss is about with the support of a level 1
and 2 coach.
All you need to bring is your cycling gear, helmet, shoes and pedals. Track bike hire is included in the
$40 fee.
When: Saturday 28 th August 8am-9.45am
Where: Dunc Gray Velodrome
Who: Anyone from beginner to experienced track cyclist will get something out of the day
Cost: $40 covering track hire, bike hire and coaching
If you're keen, please register your interest with Barry at ds@suvelo.com.au. We look forward to
seeing you there.
Ride for Life
On Sunday 22 August the seventh annual Ride for Life will be held at Centennial Park. The event
raises money for the Prince of Wales Oncology Department. In addition to the racing, there will be a
bicycle trade show and entertainment for kids.
For registered cyclists there are graded criteriums ranging in distance between 24km and 36km held
on a fast 2km undulating circuit in Centennial Park. A corporate ride as well as a recreational family
fun ride for those looking for a way to encourage family members to participate in the sport of
cycling. The prize money on the day is between $5,000 and $10,000
Needless to say, it will be a fantastic event for entertainment, racing and of course it is a great
cause, so we encourage all SUVelo members who are available to attend (and race!).
Entries via www.nsw.cycling.org.au by 8 August, or there is entry on the day for an additional $10.
More details at www.rideforlife.org.au.
Cycling Australia Update
As part of joining SU Velo you were also required to affiliate with Cycling Australia’s state body
Cycling NSW. Their affiliation covers things like insurance, but also allows you to enter races.
If you have not yet received your plastic licence, please contact me at
development@suvelo.com.au and I will chase them up for you. After speaking to them today it
sounds like there will be some members (who like me) fell through the cracks in the licence printing
department.
In the meantime, those members who transferred from other clubs are able to use their old licences
to enter races, however new members will need to present a SUVelo receipt in lieu of a plastic
licence. If you require one of these, again, please contact me and I will arrange that.
Thank you for your patience
Tour de France Tipping Competition Winner
Congratulations to Jonathan Pearce for collecting the most points in the SUVelo TDF Tipping
Competition. Apparently Jonathan has been spending his recovery time off the bike wisely studying
the form guide.
SU Velo Website
the current site. The new site is expected to be online in September. Keep an eye on emails from DS
Barry and Ride Captain Nic for information on racing, training and other club events.
Rider of the Week
Each week we will be profiling a club member with the hope of gleaning something new that you didn’t already know about
them. Our profiles aim to take you under the helmet, and you never know, next weeks profile may be you.
Riding since: 1997
Rides a: Cervelo R3, Gary Fisher Paragon 29er, Giant Trance X1, No fixie as yet!
Favourite Sydney ride: Akuna Bay - West Head - Palm Beach
Favourite cycling quote: Classic quote from Greg LeMond - "It never gets easier, you just go
faster."
What inspires you to get out of bed in the morning to go training? Pure caffeine. Got to do
something after a 5am double espresso!
Favourite caffeine dealer: I like Toby's Estate at Potts Point and good old Paddington Grind
for consistency.
Favourite food stop: Terry Hills bakery (The pizza scrolls there have saved me many times!)
Fastest time around Centennial Park: 5mins28secs and hopefully getting faster.
Worst excuse for missing a training ride: I left my helmet in New Zealand.
Any advice for our members? Get a friend into it! Riding is addictive but it only works if you
help your friends get started.
Fashion tips: You can see from my photo, obviously fashion on the bike is not my strong
point. Orange and red?? That said, please throw out old, faded knicks. Trust me, when
they're see through they're gone!
Little known fact about you: I met my fiancé Francoise through cycling. I used to ride with her
older brother Gilles, who eventually moved overseas to pursue a pro road cycling career.
Francoise and I remained good friends even after he left and 13 years later we're engaged.
Where will we find you when you’re not on your bike: In summer I'm a fan of the Coogee
baths and Bronte Beach, in winter the Lord Dudley Hotel.
Members Corner
A call to all budding journalists, get your creative juices flowing and your incisive arguments
down on paper and send them in to see your work in print! Whether it be an insightful
commentary on the state of Sydney cyclepaths, or a ‘how to guide’ on managing your
significant others expectations on how much time/money you spend on your bike, to a novice’s
breakthrough into the world of track cycling. But maybe not fashion, I think we’ve got that more
or less covered with our resident guru, Stefano.
Send any contributions to development@suvelo.com.au
If there are any talented
graphic designers amongst our
ranks at SU Velo, we are
currently looking to get input
for our new website. It’s a
glamorous job, but it doesn’t
pay very well (or at all),
however it would be greatly
appreciated by the club if you
can donate your time and
talent. If that sounds like you,
Fashionista on La Pista
Squadra, you have pleased me this winter with your commitment to upholding our lycra flag. Sure, there's been the occasional slip-up
(see below) and some things we may never truly recover from - Barry, your long navy socks - but mostly you have pleased me. I would
be proud to let you buy me an espresso after you've led me out for the sprint victory. But please, do not let your vigilance rest. I do not
want to have my week ruined by reports that such-and-such has worn knicks that have perished at strategically important areas, or
that Mel wore her cap backwards INSIDE a cafe. This will not do. And let me warn you all now - next week we will be focusing on
headwear, what to wear and how to wear it. If you wish to "push your own headwear barrow", I am open to all bribes of course.
Nic Martin - You are a very beautiful man, such fine deportment, such fine attacking panache on the rugged cols of the Eastern
Suburbs. I'm not surprised that you choose to keep your knees and legs uncovered much of the time so that the squadra may enjoy
them too. Normally one must go to the ice-swimming holes of the Finnish tundra to see such fine icy knees. But Nic, my friend, it is time to
realise that in temperatures below 8 degrees, the cold Australian air turns your northern European knees a peculiar azzura, not unlike
the azzura worn by my good friend Mario Cipollini when he won the 2002 Worlds and enjoyed the company of many podium girls in the
team bus that afternoon. You are no Cipo, but if you want blue knees Nic, please see Lex and buy some SUV kneewarmers. $4 fine.
Matt Donzow - My spies tell me you are new to the wonderful sport of cycling. You show much talent and power, but clearly there are
gaps in your cycling education, gaps that are exceeded by those between the tops of your armwarmers and the sleeves of your jersey.
Perhaps Madonna was doing this in the 80' during her 'Holiday' era, or maybe there were movies where this was good, but this is not
Flashdance Matt, and you are no Jennifer Beale. Fashion has moved on, please stop this nonsense immediately. Luckily for you I have a
solution - either do your level best to correct this travesty whenever you feel the breeze on your biceps, or head down to Fitness First to
work a little more on those guns of yours. It's up to you, 1 espresso fine while you think about it.
David Jordan - a barrister's work is never done. So many people to sue, so many wigs and gowns to put on (sounds like a dress-up
party), so it was great you could join us for a midweek sessione the other day. But please, don't make me sue you for bad fashion, that
horizontal blue and yellow striped wind vest may be club colours, but it is definitely not club fashion. In Spanish, you are El Presidente, in
my mother tongue you are Il Capo, but to everyone you look like Il Scassinatore di Prosciutto, The Hamburglar. Fine is a 1/4 pounder
and a caramel sundae.
