UWC National Committees 

UWC has national committees and selection contacts in 122 

countries on 5 continents. 

National Committees are organised by tireless volunteers who: 

- select students based on merit and potential, irrespective of 

socio-economic background; 

- promote the movement and motivate prospective students 

to participate in the selections; 

-support students and their families during the UWC experience; 

- provide support to the network alumni in their country.

In Duino ... Since 1982 

The United World College of the Adriatic was instituted by law (Art. 46 

of the Presidential Decree dated 6 March 1978 no. 102) and set up by 

the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia in 1982. 

As a promoter of culture, the United World College of the Adriatic is a 

registered non-profit organisation with a social purpose (ONLUS). 


Our Location 

UWC Adriatic is located on the Adriatic Sea spread out across the village 

of Duino at the cultural crossroad of Italian, Slovene and Austrian heritage. 

Duino Castle, private residence of the Princes della Torre e Tasso (von 

Thurn und Taxis), appears in all its majesty at the center of the village. 

As a seaside village, Duino has a small harbour: a beautiful pier looking 

out upon the striking Adriatic Sea. 


Our pedagogical approach 

UWC of the Adriatic has a unique approach to teaching, where the personal 

development of the student is central. Students are challenged to develop their 

own well-founded ideas and express them in their work; often understanding 

and asking questions is more important than factual knowledge. Classes are 

run using diverse teaching methods and resources. Experiential learning is 

encouraged and students are given opportunities to learn outside the classroom. 

The process of learning and the UWC life experience are inseparable - one 

completes the other in many unusual ways. 


Academics 

The UWC of the Adriatic teaches the International Baccalaureate programme. 

This Diploma programme is administered by the International Baccalaureate 

Organization headquartered in Geneva. The IB Diploma, offered by more than 2,500 

international schools throughout the world, is recognized for university entry in 

over 80 different countries. UWC played an innovative role in establishing the IB. 

Courses at the College are taught in English. Many students have been admitted 

to this College in the past with very poor English and have managed, with great 

determination, to master this language. Every student also learns Italian to foster 

a better understanding of the country that is hosting them. 


International Affairs Programme 

The International affairs Programme at UWC Adriatic is designed 

to offer students and staff an insight into current issues from 

around the world and to make them reflect about the challenges 

of our time. The Programme involves a biweekly speaker series, 

encompassing academics and international organization 

professionals, poets, writers and journalists, politicians, diplomats, 

NGO workers and scientists. 


International Projects 

We are committed to innovating education and using it as a force to 

create intercultural understanding. With this objective, we promote 

various international projects focusing on professional development 

for secondary school teachers in South East Europe as well as in Africa. 

Every year, we organize conferences and international events to 

promote cultural dialogue in partnership international organizations 

such as the European Union or UNESCO. 


After Graduation 

The IB Diploma is one of the most prestigious and 

widely known secondary school qualifications in the 

world and recognised by leading universities and 

employers globally. Each year, about 40 of the top 

universities in the world send their representatives to 

interview our students and offer them scholarships.

The foundation of UWC 

Adriatic was made possible 

by the generous support of 

the Italian Ministry of Foreign 

Affairs and the Friuli Venezia 

Giulia Region. We hold the 

school buildings and grounds 

in trust indefinitely, and our 

income remains substantially 

from these two sources. We 

know this will not continue 

forever, however. The last few 

years have taught us that 

we are not immune from 

budget cuts imposed in times 

of increased cost saving. 

Diversifying our income 

streams and substantially 

increasing revenue from private 

sources will help to secure our 

present and meet our projected 

future of 5 million euro annual 

running costs.

Scholarship 

The cost of a two year scholarship at UWC Adriatic is 

40.000 Euro to be delivered in two annual installments 

of 20,000 Euro each. 

The amount includes: 

• academic costs; 

• italian special course; 

• accommodation, meals and tutoring 

by teachers; 

• extra-academic activities (sports, music, art); 

• international affairs programme; 

The amount does NOT include: 

• round-trip travel from the place of residence 

to the College; 

• “pocket money”. 


Donor visibility 

UWC Adriatic works in partnership with donors to 

organise visibility events and brings together donors 

and students to share their common dreams, efforts 

and success stories.
