The monarchy’s major oil fields were located in the eastern part of its territory – in Halich, i.e. southeast Poland and part of the Ukraine (a belt extending from Krakow to Lvov). Initially, the crude oil was processed directly in the Halich refineries, but their capacity soon failed to keep pace with the growth in petroleum demand. In other parts of the monarchy, refineries started to be built in the 1880s. According to 1887 statistics, 56 of the total number of 64 Austrian refineries were located in Halich. Halich was the third largest oil-producing region in 1908. Austrian refineries processed mainly the Halich petroleum but later they also used some Romanian and American petroleum (the imports of which were limited) and, in particular, petroleum imported from Caucasus. The Czech contribution to the petroleum industry is documented, for example, by the word gatch (gatsch), meaning the soft wax produced during the paraffin manufacturing process.
