The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>’s Annual <strong>Volunteer</strong> <strong>Appreciation</strong> dinner on March 29th was held for the first time at the Hay Street<br />
United Methodist Church Hall with 125 <strong>Volunteer</strong>s, guests and staff attending. Brenda Edge, President of the Board<br />
of Directors, welcomed everyone with a reflection about spring flowers.<br />
<strong>Volunteer</strong> of the Year Awards were presented in four categories:<br />
Cathy Ory presented Administrative <strong>Volunteer</strong> of the Year awards this year to Estelle Richard and Nettie<br />
Hawkins, which is appropriate because these two volunteers come together. Estelle started in December 1993, about<br />
two weeks after the clinic opened. She recruited her former boss, Nettie, to join her in March 1994 and they have<br />
both been coming faithfully ever since. About every 3 months they come in and go through every bill that was paid<br />
to collect the information needed to file for our state sales tax refund.<br />
The Group <strong>Volunteer</strong> of the Year award was presented by Katheryn Jenifer to Jean Cavaco of Westminster<br />
Presbyterian Church. Since 2006, church members have been staffing the clinic on Thursday evenings every other<br />
month. For a couple of years they even brought the evening meal for their church volunteers who helped at the clinic<br />
to treat our patients.<br />
Dr. Tinsley Rucker presented the Community <strong>Volunteer</strong> of the Year Award to Retired Brigadier General Joseph<br />
Nagel, who served as a member of the original steering committee in 1992 and has been actively involved since, serving<br />
over the years as Board President and a member of a number of committees at the clinic. Joe has initiated a<br />
number of valuable contacts throughout the community including both civilian and military. Joe makes sure we<br />
meet with the Womack Army Hospital commander soon after every change of command to thank him or her for<br />
allowing the third-year family practice residents to staff The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> on Tuesday nights as part of their rotation.<br />
Joe encouraged the clinic to join the North Carolina Defense Business Association so we can be at the forefront meeting<br />
new businesses that are moving into our community due to BRAC.<br />
The <strong>Clinic</strong>al <strong>Volunteer</strong> of the Year was not present, so this award will be given at a later date.<br />

Committee organizing the event, and providing<br />
door prizes to add to the excitement.<br />
We give our gracious thanks to Dee Stafford<br />
and Hay Street United Methodist Church for<br />
making this a wonderful event by providing<br />
the facility; Dr. David Galatas for giving his<br />
employee, Pam, the caterer, a paid day off<br />
for her to prepare the food, Lillian’s<br />
Trophies for providing plaques for our<br />
award winners and Martha Goetz and<br />
Cecilia Marks for donating the beautiful<br />
camellias for centerpieces on each table.<br />
Thanks also to Karen Mantzouris of the<br />
Education Committee for her presentation<br />
about the clinic volunteers and ways to<br />
thank them in other languages. Rick<br />
Ramos, one of our Nurse volunteers, sang<br />
and played the guitar for some soothing<br />
background music while everyone was<br />
enjoying their meal. Walt Swing, Board<br />
President-Elect gave closing remarks and<br />
thanks to the volunteers stating that in the<br />
upcoming years, many people will still be<br />
uninsured, so their volunteer jobs are<br />
secure here at the clinic.<br />
The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> staff appreciates ALL<br />

Lauren Harper Honored<br />
Lauren Shackleford Harper started volunteering<br />
with us in 1998, when a member of<br />
her church was moving and worried aloud<br />
about who would take over her volunteer<br />
duties at The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>. As is typical of<br />
Lauren, she stepped in to help out. Lauren<br />
will admit she wasn’t sure what help she<br />
would be able to offer since she is not a<br />
health care professional, but it did not take<br />
Sister Jean long to recognize Lauren’s talents.<br />
A former employee of Merrill Lynch,<br />
Lauren’s attention to detail was a perfect fit<br />
Lauren Harper with her parents, Leon and Judy Shackleford<br />
for ordering medications through the pharmaceutical<br />
companies’ indigent drug programs. Lauren quickly took over responsibility for ordering prescriptions<br />
for “her” patients and developed a close relationship with many of them. She was voted our<br />
Administrative <strong>Volunteer</strong> of the Year in 2003.<br />
Throughout the years Lauren has continued to step in whenever she saw a need. She helps with our<br />
Golf Tournament, serves on the <strong>Clinic</strong>al Services Committee, is on our Board of Directors and served as<br />
Secretary of the Board for two years. She even learned how to sterilize dental instruments when she heard<br />
we had a need.<br />
Lauren has always given of her time in this community even while raising a family. In addition to her<br />
weekly visits to our clinic Lauren has helped in schools, tutored young people, headed a Christian group and<br />
received a life time award for service to her church.<br />
With great pride and in recognition of Lauren’s longstanding dedication to our clinic, her parents, Leon<br />
and Judy Shackleford, have sponsored the Dental Sterilization Room in her honor. We are delighted to have<br />
such a fitting tribute to Lauren’s many contributions to the continuing success of our clinic, and we appreciate<br />
the Shackleford’s generosity in choosing such a charitable gift to our clinic as a way to honor their<br />
daughter.<br />

Swings Honored<br />
Walt and Loretta Swing have generously<br />
sponsored the Executive Director’s office,<br />
which is a fitting tribute because Walt<br />
spends so much of his time there. Since<br />
1998, Walt has been sharing his accounting<br />
expertise with our clinic overseeing every<br />
aspect of our financial operations, which<br />
means he is often in the office several hours<br />
every week. His contributions are invaluable,<br />
meticulously preparing the budget,<br />

monitoring expenses, and assembling<br />
materials for our annual audit among other details. Loretta is his “silent partner” offering advice gleaned<br />
from her accounting experience at Methodist University. Walt is so conscientious about his duties he even<br />
stays in touch by e-mail when he and Loretta are out of town, visiting their children and grandchildren or<br />
otherwise making the most of their retirement.<br />
Walt has served on our Finance and Audit Committee, as a member of the Board of Directors, as<br />
Assistant Treasurer, and was voted Administrative <strong>Volunteer</strong> of the Year in 2001. He is currently our President<br />
Elect and will serve as President of the Board of Directors in FY 2010-2011. Our clinic family is thrilled to<br />
have this visible tribute to the generosity and outstanding contributions of Walt and Loretta Swing in supporting<br />
the mission of The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>.
It was a wonderful evening on Saturday, February 6, 2010 when The <strong>CARE</strong><br />
<strong>Clinic</strong>’s Thirteenth Annual Evening of <strong>CARE</strong> Dinners took place. Five hundred<br />
seventy-one guests and hosts gathered at 36 host homes for a great<br />
evening of dining and fellowship. Guests at two of the homes made a donation<br />
and accepted their host’s creative alternative meal to the catered meal.<br />
The hosts and guests at two other homes provided a special evening for residents<br />
at Mrs. Green’s Women’s Shelter by donating their dinners and then<br />
they went out to dinner together. Through the generosity of sponsors, 51 Ft<br />
Bragg Soldiers were treated to an enjoyable evening out and given the<br />
chance to meet many of the people in our community.<br />
Thanks to Dorothy’s Catering, for coming through again with two<br />
wonderful menus. Hosts were given a choice of serving either Parmesan<br />
Chicken with Marinara or Baked Lasagna. Many hosts and guests were<br />
again very impressed with the taste and diversity of the meals.<br />

A historic health care reform bill was signed into<br />
law in March that will provide coverage for 29–30<br />
million Americans. While this significant legislation<br />
is a first step in providing coverage for some of<br />
our patients in the future, full implementation of the<br />
legislation will not go into effect until 2014.<br />
According to a Congressional Budget Office estimate,<br />
some 23 million Americans will still lack<br />
insurance in 2019, after key provisions of the law<br />
have been in effect for as long as five or six years.<br />
All free clinics, including The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong>,<br />
remain committed to serving the nation’s uninsured<br />
who are in need of health care today and we<br />
look forward in the future to serving patients who<br />
will still need our help. Even with health care<br />
reform, The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> will continue to need support<br />
from our community, our funders, and our volunteers<br />
to provide services to our patients.<br />
Casino Night Helps <strong>Clinic</strong><br />
A night of fun and excitement was experienced by<br />
all who went to Highland Country Club for the 5th<br />
Annual Casino Night on March 19th! Many things<br />
were going on at the same time as the guests played<br />
roulette, craps, blackjack, Texas hold’em, slots and<br />
much more at this event sponsored by The<br />
Homebuilders Association of Fayetteville. There was<br />
even a magician who thrilled the guests with his<br />
magic tricks and left them wondering, “How did he<br />
do that?”<br />
We can’t thank you enough for the $10,793<br />
proceeds that will be donated to The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> in<br />
support of our mission to treat the low income,<br />
uninsured adults of Cumberland County! Thanks to<br />

A GRATEFUL PATIENT<br />
Anita has been coming to The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> since 2006 and says she would not know what to do if<br />
The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> were not here. She initially came for general colds or sinus problems, but her<br />
health got worse and she began suffering from neck pain. She is thankful for the chiropractic care<br />
she received at the clinic which helped relieve her pain. She also received a referral for an MRI and<br />
helpful information about Vocational Rehabilitation.<br />
She wants everyone at the clinic to know that patients are treated with respect and acknowledged<br />
as a person. The one thing that stands out for her about The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> is that every patient<br />
is treated the same. Anita says, “I have observed various people coming into the clinic and the<br />
receptionist, nurses and doctors treat each patient the same.” She said she tries to leave a donation<br />
after each visit, but even though that has not always been possible, the staff and volunteers have<br />
always respond to her pleasantly and with respect whether she gives a donation or not.<br />

We are happy to report that our newly designed website is up<br />
and running. Go to www.thecareclinic.org and check it out.<br />
There are many new features there for you, including our<br />
biggest change…online donations! We are trying to make it<br />
easier for you and our long-distance donors to have the convenience of online donations. You just<br />
have to fill out the form on the donation page and submit it. You will then be taken to the clinic’s<br />
PayPal page where you can make your secure donation by entering your credit or debit card information.<br />
That’s all there is to it! You will also be able to purchase tickets online for some of our<br />
fundraising events, check out the latest clinic news and see upcoming events on our homepage calendar.<br />
If you have any difficulties or questions while using our payment forms or with PayPal,<br />
please call Gloria at 485-0555. We are learning as we go along, so please be patient with additions<br />
of pictures and other features.<br />
We wish to sincerely thank our wonderful Community Relations Committee and website subcommittee<br />
for all of the hard work they have done to make our new website a reality. We hope you<br />

MARP Milestone<br />
The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> is proud to announce in January 2010, halfway through our fifth year of operating<br />
the Medication Access Review Program (MARP), we have reached $1 million in medications<br />
received and distributed to our patients. What an amazing accomplishment! MARP requires a volunteer<br />
and a patient to work cooperatively and efficiently to stay on a regular ordering schedule.<br />
Staying on schedule helps the clinic reduce pharmacy costs by receiving the medications at no<br />
charge directly from the pharmaceutical companies’ indigent programs instead of having to supplement<br />
a patient’s medications from the clinic’s purchased stock in between orders. Our MARP<br />
coordinators, Lauren Harper and Gina Saragosa, would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to those<br />
patients who have worked so well with them to achieve this goal. Our coordinators are already<br />
working hard to reach their next million dollar milestone.
Sixteenth Annual<br />
Golf Tournament<br />
The <strong>CARE</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> golf tournament is scheduled for<br />
Friday, October 15, 2010 at Gates Four Golf &<br />
Country Club. The tournament format is a Texas<br />
Scramble with four-person teams. It begins at<br />
11:30 a.m. with lunch and registration and continues<br />
with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. This major<br />
fundraiser netted over $31,000 last year to help us in<br />
our mission to our community’s uninsured adults.<br />
We invite you to participate in this wonderful event!<br />
If you are not a golfer, but would like to help out, we<br />
are in need of sponsors for the tournament expenses,<br />
such as catering, greens fees and numerous<br />
mailings. We would also appreciate donated items<br />
that can be raffled. If you would like to play in the<br />
tournament, sponsor a player, one of our brave Ft.<br />
Bragg soldiers or a four-person team, sponsor a<br />
hole sign, give a donation, or simply get more<br />
