Volunteer Appreciation
2nd Quarter 2010

The CARE Clinic’s Annual Volunteer Appreciation dinner on March 29th was held for the first time at the Hay Street
United Methodist Church Hall with 125 Volunteers, guests and staff attending. Brenda Edge, President of the Board
of Directors, welcomed everyone with a reflection about spring flowers.
Volunteer of the Year Awards were presented in four categories:
Cathy Ory presented Administrative Volunteer of the Year awards this year to Estelle Richard and Nettie
Hawkins, which is appropriate because these two volunteers come together. Estelle started in December 1993, about
two weeks after the clinic opened. She recruited her former boss, Nettie, to join her in March 1994 and they have
both been coming faithfully ever since. About every 3 months they come in and go through every bill that was paid
to collect the information needed to file for our state sales tax refund.
The Group Volunteer of the Year award was presented by Katheryn Jenifer to Jean Cavaco of Westminster
Presbyterian Church. Since 2006, church members have been staffing the clinic on Thursday evenings every other
month. For a couple of years they even brought the evening meal for their church volunteers who helped at the clinic
to treat our patients.
Dr. Tinsley Rucker presented the Community Volunteer of the Year Award to Retired Brigadier General Joseph
Nagel, who served as a member of the original steering committee in 1992 and has been actively involved since, serving
over the years as Board President and a member of a number of committees at the clinic. Joe has initiated a
number of valuable contacts throughout the community including both civilian and military. Joe makes sure we
meet with the Womack Army Hospital commander soon after every change of command to thank him or her for
allowing the third-year family practice residents to staff The CARE Clinic on Tuesday nights as part of their rotation.
Joe encouraged the clinic to join the North Carolina Defense Business Association so we can be at the forefront meeting
new businesses that are moving into our community due to BRAC.
The Clinical Volunteer of the Year was not present, so this award will be given at a later date.

Appreciation
We appreciate our Volunteer
Committee organizing the event, and providing
door prizes to add to the excitement.
We give our gracious thanks to Dee Stafford
and Hay Street United Methodist Church for
making this a wonderful event by providing
the facility; Dr. David Galatas for giving his
employee, Pam, the caterer, a paid day off
for her to prepare the food, Lillian’s
Trophies for providing plaques for our
award winners and Martha Goetz and
Cecilia Marks for donating the beautiful
camellias for centerpieces on each table.

about the clinic volunteers and ways to
thank them in other languages. Rick
Ramos, one of our Nurse volunteers, sang
and played the guitar for some soothing
background music while everyone was
enjoying their meal. Walt Swing, Board
President-Elect gave closing remarks and
thanks to the volunteers stating that in the
upcoming years, many people will still be
uninsured, so their volunteer jobs are
secure here at the clinic.

Lauren Harper Honored
Lauren Shackleford Harper started volunteering
with us in 1998, when a member of
her church was moving and worried aloud
about who would take over her volunteer
duties at The CARE Clinic. As is typical of
Lauren, she stepped in to help out. Lauren
will admit she wasn’t sure what help she
would be able to offer since she is not a
health care professional, but it did not take
Sister Jean long to recognize Lauren’s talents.
A former employee of Merrill Lynch,
Lauren’s attention to detail was a perfect fit
Lauren Harper with her parents, Leon and Judy Shackleford
for ordering medications through the pharmaceutical
companies’ indigent drug programs. Lauren quickly took over responsibility for ordering prescriptions
for “her” patients and developed a close relationship with many of them. She was voted our
Administrative Volunteer of the Year in 2003.
Throughout the years Lauren has continued to step in whenever she saw a need. She helps with our
Golf Tournament, serves on the Clinical Services Committee, is on our Board of Directors and served as
Secretary of the Board for two years. She even learned how to sterilize dental instruments when she heard
we had a need.
Lauren has always given of her time in this community even while raising a family. In addition to her
weekly visits to our clinic Lauren has helped in schools, tutored young people, headed a Christian group and
received a life time award for service to her church.
With great pride and in recognition of Lauren’s longstanding dedication to our clinic, her parents, Leon
and Judy Shackleford, have sponsored the Dental Sterilization Room in her honor. We are delighted to have
such a fitting tribute to Lauren’s many contributions to the continuing success of our clinic, and we appreciate
the Shackleford’s generosity in choosing such a charitable gift to our clinic as a way to honor their
daughter.

Swings Honored
Walt and Loretta Swing have generously
sponsored the Executive Director’s office,
which is a fitting tribute because Walt
spends so much of his time there. Since
1998, Walt has been sharing his accounting
expertise with our clinic overseeing every
aspect of our financial operations, which
means he is often in the office several hours
every week. His contributions are invaluable,
meticulously preparing the budget,

monitoring expenses, and assembling
materials for our annual audit among other details. Loretta is his “silent partner” offering advice gleaned
from her accounting experience at Methodist University. Walt is so conscientious about his duties he even
stays in touch by e-mail when he and Loretta are out of town, visiting their children and grandchildren or
otherwise making the most of their retirement.
Walt has served on our Finance and Audit Committee, as a member of the Board of Directors, as
Assistant Treasurer, and was voted Administrative Volunteer of the Year in 2001. He is currently our President
Elect and will serve as President of the Board of Directors in FY 2010-2011. Our clinic family is thrilled to
have this visible tribute to the generosity and outstanding contributions of Walt and Loretta Swing in supporting
the mission of The CARE Clinic.

It was a wonderful evening on Saturday, February 6, 2010 when The CARE
Clinic’s Thirteenth Annual Evening of CARE Dinners took place. Five hundred
seventy-one guests and hosts gathered at 36 host homes for a great
evening of dining and fellowship. Guests at two of the homes made a donation
and accepted their host’s creative alternative meal to the catered meal.
The hosts and guests at two other homes provided a special evening for residents
at Mrs. Green’s Women’s Shelter by donating their dinners and then
they went out to dinner together. Through the generosity of sponsors, 51 Ft
Bragg Soldiers were treated to an enjoyable evening out and given the
chance to meet many of the people in our community.
Thanks to Dorothy’s Catering, for coming through again with two
wonderful menus. Hosts were given a choice of serving either Parmesan
Chicken with Marinara or Baked Lasagna. Many hosts and guests were
again very impressed with the taste and diversity of the meals.

Health Care
Reform
A historic health care reform bill was signed into
law in March that will provide coverage for 29–30
million Americans. While this significant legislation
is a first step in providing coverage for some of
our patients in the future, full implementation of the
legislation will not go into effect until 2014.
According to a Congressional Budget Office estimate,
some 23 million Americans will still lack
insurance in 2019, after key provisions of the law
have been in effect for as long as five or six years.
All free clinics, including The CARE Clinic,
remain committed to serving the nation’s uninsured
who are in need of health care today and we
look forward in the future to serving patients who
will still need our help. Even with health care
reform, The CARE Clinic will continue to need support
from our community, our funders, and our volunteers
to provide services to our patients.
Casino Night Helps Clinic
A night of fun and excitement was experienced by
all who went to Highland Country Club for the 5th
Annual Casino Night on March 19th! Many things
were going on at the same time as the guests played
roulette, craps, blackjack, Texas hold’em, slots and
much more at this event sponsored by The
Homebuilders Association of Fayetteville. There was
even a magician who thrilled the guests with his
magic tricks and left them wondering, “How did he
do that?”
We can’t thank you enough for the $10,793
proceeds that will be donated to The CARE Clinic in
support of our mission to treat the low income,
uninsured adults of Cumberland County! Thanks to
everyone who attended and to the event’s presenter,

A GRATEFUL PATIENT
Anita has been coming to The CARE Clinic since 2006 and says she would not know what to do if
The CARE Clinic were not here. She initially came for general colds or sinus problems, but her
health got worse and she began suffering from neck pain. She is thankful for the chiropractic care
she received at the clinic which helped relieve her pain. She also received a referral for an MRI and
helpful information about Vocational Rehabilitation.
She wants everyone at the clinic to know that patients are treated with respect and acknowledged
as a person. The one thing that stands out for her about The CARE Clinic is that every patient
is treated the same. Anita says, “I have observed various people coming into the clinic and the
receptionist, nurses and doctors treat each patient the same.” She said she tries to leave a donation
after each visit, but even though that has not always been possible, the staff and volunteers have
always respond to her pleasantly and with respect whether she gives a donation or not.

We are happy to report that our newly designed website is up

There are many new features there for you, including our
biggest change…online donations! We are trying to make it
easier for you and our long-distance donors to have the convenience of online donations. You just
have to fill out the form on the donation page and submit it. You will then be taken to the clinic’s
PayPal page where you can make your secure donation by entering your credit or debit card information.
That’s all there is to it! You will also be able to purchase tickets online for some of our
fundraising events, check out the latest clinic news and see upcoming events on our homepage calendar.
If you have any difficulties or questions while using our payment forms or with PayPal,

of pictures and other features.
We wish to sincerely thank our wonderful Community Relations Committee and website subcommittee

MARP Milestone
The CARE Clinic is proud to announce in January 2010, halfway through our fifth year of operating
the Medication Access Review Program (MARP), we have reached $1 million in medications
received and distributed to our patients. What an amazing accomplishment! MARP requires a volunteer
and a patient to work cooperatively and efficiently to stay on a regular ordering schedule.
Staying on schedule helps the clinic reduce pharmacy costs by receiving the medications at no
charge directly from the pharmaceutical companies’ indigent programs instead of having to supplement
a patient’s medications from the clinic’s purchased stock in between orders. Our MARP
coordinators, Lauren Harper and Gina Saragosa, would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to those
patients who have worked so well with them to achieve this goal. Our coordinators are already
working hard to reach their next million dollar milestone.

Sixteenth Annual
Golf Tournament
The CARE Clinic golf tournament is scheduled for
Friday, October 15, 2010 at Gates Four Golf &
Country Club. The tournament format is a Texas
Scramble with four-person teams. It begins at
11:30 a.m. with lunch and registration and continues
with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. This major
fundraiser netted over $31,000 last year to help us in
our mission to our community’s uninsured adults.
We invite you to participate in this wonderful event!
If you are not a golfer, but would like to help out, we
are in need of sponsors for the tournament expenses,
such as catering, greens fees and numerous
mailings. We would also appreciate donated items
that can be raffled. If you would like to play in the
tournament, sponsor a player, one of our brave Ft.
Bragg soldiers or a four-person team, sponsor a
hole sign, give a donation, or simply get more
