We are aware that the global environment is fragile… and ‘many people have begun to question the ability of the planet to support the growing population if our present ways continue. The result is that, while twenty years ago most people would not have given the environment more than a passing thought,: today many people are taking a keen interest in environmental problems. (Dunlop et al, 1997, 2) Saugeen District students, be they members of the Energy Specialist High Skills Major program and/or the Planeteers/ EcoSchool Team, as students enrolled in the Grade 12 Environment and Resource Management class (CGR 4M) have collectively worked to “examine ecological processes, the principles of sustainability, and strategies for resource management, with a focus on the challenges [and successes] of environmental degradation and resource depletion” (Ministry of Education, 2009, http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/secondary/canworld1112curr.pdf 104 of 265). Their goal was the submission of this report on the exciting opportunities available to the school population, the community of Saugeen Shores, and the Bluewater District School Board, as the future of S.D.S.S. is considered. A starting point is the consideration of the rights and responsibilities that go along with this opportunity: Rights We have a right to consume resources to support our growth and development, but rights must be balanced with responsibilities. Shelter � We must take the opportunity to reduce our reliance on non-renewable sources of electricity, incorporating renewable energies into the design of S.D.S.S. � Where we can source eco-friendly alternatives in construction, we should make every effort to do so. Water � We need to reflect on the impact we have on our water resources and then consider alternatives to: � Reduce our water consumption within the building and on the school grounds. � Minimize our contribution to pollution of our water resources. Transportation � Students arrive at school by a variety of means – by both necessity and choice. The impact of modes of transportation can reduced by: � Encouraging students and staff to consider alternatives to driving (e.g. walking, biking, etc.). � Adhering to the No-Idling Policy. � Make wise choices when it comes to the extensive surfaces of parking lots. Food � Consideration of the ecological and health benefits/ risks of food being served in the building are to be taken into consideration. For example: � Can it be locally-sourced? � Are the livestock and land treated in a humane and sustainable manner? � What can we do to maximize the use of the school grounds (e.g. a small herb garden exists in the Heritage Garden)? � Are the materials used for serving biodegradable? Consumer Goods � As citizens of the developed world, we must be more conscious of our impact on the lives and livelihood of others. For products, we should consider: � The content of the materials (e.g. cotton, organic cotton, green cleaning products, etc.) � Where it was made? � Under what kind of conditions? 1
