COMPETITIVE GRADUATE SCHOOL FELLOWSHIPS<br />

The Graduate School funds several competitive fellowships for incoming and continuing students. For incoming<br />

students selection is based on departmental nomination during <strong>the</strong> application process. Continuing students should<br />

follow <strong>the</strong> application procedures listed on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> University Graduate School Financial Support Web site.<br />

Students holding a competitive graduate school fellowship are not permitted to hold o<strong>the</strong>r fellowships or <strong>Duke</strong><br />

employment concurrent with <strong>the</strong> graduate school award without prior approval from <strong>the</strong> dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> graduate school.<br />

Exceptions to this are <strong>the</strong> Summer Research and Dean’s Graduate Summer Fellowships, which can be held with any<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r University or external award provided <strong>the</strong> student continues to make adequate progress toward degree<br />

completion. Typically, fellowships for both incoming and continuing students will provide a full tuition and fee<br />

scholarship, health insurance, and a 9 or 12 month stipend depending on <strong>the</strong> student’s program <strong>of</strong> study. Some awards<br />

also provide stipend supplements to <strong>the</strong> standard departmental stipend, research and/or travel expense reimbursement.<br />

Fellowships for Incoming Students<br />

Bass Fellowships for Undergraduate Instruction are funded through <strong>the</strong> Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Endowment<br />

Fund for <strong>the</strong> Bass Undergraduate Instructional Program. This endowment supports <strong>the</strong> Graduate School’s mission to<br />

train <strong>the</strong> educators and pr<strong>of</strong>essionals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> future. Students are required to develop and teach one course based on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

individual research, during <strong>the</strong> academic year in which <strong>the</strong>y hold <strong>the</strong> award. This fellowship provides a 9-month stipend,<br />

a $5,000 stipend supplement, scholarships for full tuition, health and recreation fees, and <strong>Duke</strong> student medical<br />

insurance for up to twelve advanced graduate students each year.<br />

Phillip Jackson Baugh Fellowship for Graduate Students in Anthropology, Economics, Psychology, and<br />

Sociology - This one-year fellowship aims to promote careers and interest in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> aging and human development.<br />

The Baugh Fellowship provides a 9-month stipend, full tuition, health and recreation fee scholarships, and <strong>Duke</strong> student<br />

medical insurance for one advanced graduate student each year.<br />

Boone Fellowships for Canadian Graduate Students, funded through <strong>the</strong> Myra and William Waldo Boone<br />

Endowment provides a 9-month stipend, full tuition, health and recreation fee scholarships, and <strong>Duke</strong> student medical<br />

insurance for up to two graduate students each year.<br />

Conference Travel Awards fund advanced students who are presenting papers at national and international<br />

conferences.<br />

Evan Frankel Fellowships for Students in <strong>the</strong> Humanities are awarded to advanced doctoral students in <strong>the</strong> writeup<br />

stage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir dissertation. These fellowships provide a 9-month stipend, full tuition, health and recreation fee<br />

scholarships, and <strong>Duke</strong> student medical insurance for two graduate students each year.<br />

E. Bayard Halsted Scholarships for <strong>Duke</strong> Graduates studying Science, History or Journalism are awarded to<br />

graduate students who earned <strong>the</strong>ir undergraduate degree from any department at <strong>Duke</strong> University and who are pursuing<br />

advanced studies at <strong>Duke</strong> University in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> Science, History, or Journalism. This scholarship provides a 9-month<br />

stipend, full tuition, health and recreation fee scholarships, and <strong>Duke</strong> student medical insurance for up to three graduate<br />

students each year.<br />

Price Graduate Fellowships in Humanities/History – These fellowships are funded through <strong>the</strong> Julian Price<br />

Fellowship Endowment. Students <strong>of</strong> humanities and history disciplines are eligible to complete for this fellowship<br />

which provides a 9-month stipend, full tuition, health and recreation fee scholarships, and <strong>Duke</strong> student medical<br />

insurance for up to five graduate students each year. Each recipient will also receive a $5,000 award to be used<br />

exclusively to cover expenditures for research. These expenditures can include travel for research purposes, attendance<br />

at conferences, and/or purchase <strong>of</strong> supplies or equipment necessary to <strong>the</strong> research project.<br />

Sigma Xi Matching Grants. Both <strong>the</strong> national and local chapters <strong>of</strong> this scientific honorary society <strong>of</strong>fer research<br />

grants to graduate students. The Graduate School currently provides matching funding for <strong>the</strong>se awards.<br />

Special Collections Library Internships - Four Special Collections Library internships (Reference, Archival<br />

Processing, Advertising History, and African American Studies) are jointly funded by <strong>the</strong> James B. <strong>Duke</strong> One<br />

Hundredth Anniversary Fund and <strong>the</strong> Perkins Library. These 9-month internships provide a stipend, tuition, health and<br />

recreation fee scholarships, and <strong>Duke</strong> student medical insurance for advanced graduate students conducting research<br />

in <strong>the</strong>se areas.<br />

Sterns Fellowships, funded through <strong>the</strong> Ka<strong>the</strong>rine Goodman Stern Fellowship Endowment, provide funding to<br />

students in <strong>the</strong>ir final year <strong>of</strong> dissertation research. These fellowships provide a 9-month stipend, full tuition, health and<br />

recreation fee scholarships, and <strong>Duke</strong> student medical insurance for up to seven graduate students each year.<br />

Summer Research Fellowships - Summer research fellowships are available to students in <strong>the</strong> humanities, natural<br />

and social sciences who have passed <strong>the</strong>ir preliminary exam. In addition to summer tuition and fees, <strong>the</strong> fellowship<br />

awards a summer stipend <strong>of</strong> $5,000. Summer Research Fellowships are supported by <strong>the</strong> Graduate School Annual Fund<br />

and <strong>the</strong> following endowments:<br />
