WORK-STUDY PROGRAM EMPLOYMENT<br />
Funds are available through <strong>the</strong> college work-study program for short-term or part-time employment <strong>of</strong> graduate<br />
students. A student who wishes to apply for work-study must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid<br />
online. Students considering <strong>the</strong> possibility <strong>of</strong> work-study for <strong>the</strong> fall should submit FAFSA forms by April 15.<br />
Eligibility requirements are similar to those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> federal loan programs. Awards are based on <strong>the</strong> job, eligibility <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> student, and availability <strong>of</strong> funds. In addition to departmental employment opportunities, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> University<br />
Career Center maintains a listing <strong>of</strong> employment opportunities for students.<br />
Student Expenses<br />
Although many students will receive financial assistance for <strong>the</strong>ir graduate education, students are responsible<br />
for ensuring that <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>the</strong> means to support <strong>the</strong>mselves, and <strong>the</strong> ability to pay tuition and fees due <strong>the</strong> university.<br />
Below is a summary <strong>of</strong> expected costs.<br />
COST OF LIVING<br />
For a specific estimate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> education for need-based awards or loan certification, contact <strong>the</strong> <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Budgets and Finance.<br />
TUITION<br />
The following figures are estimates for <strong>2012</strong>-<strong>2013</strong> and are subject to change.<br />
Ph.D. Tuition is charged on a per semester basis. For <strong>2012</strong>-<strong>2013</strong>, <strong>the</strong> tuition charge for Ph.D. students in <strong>the</strong>ir first<br />
three years <strong>of</strong> study is $21,175 per academic semester. Upon approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dean, one semester <strong>of</strong> credit may be granted<br />
for Ph.D. candidates entering with a previous graduate degree or for one semester <strong>of</strong> nondegree work done at <strong>Duke</strong> prior<br />
to matriculation. Students in <strong>the</strong>ir fourth year <strong>of</strong> study and beyond are charged a reduced tuition rate <strong>of</strong> $2,980 per<br />
academic term. All students, regardless <strong>of</strong> year <strong>of</strong> study, are charged <strong>the</strong> reduced tuition rate <strong>of</strong> $2,980 for <strong>the</strong> summer<br />
term.<br />
Non-degree Tuition is charged on a per credit unit basis at $2,225 per credit unit. Typical courses are three<br />
credits, although some may be one, two, or four depending on <strong>the</strong> course. Master’s candidates, non-degree, and parttime<br />
graduate students are also charged a per semester registration fee <strong>of</strong> $2,755.<br />
Master’s Tuition is charged on a per semester basis for <strong>2012</strong>-<strong>2013</strong> and future matriculants. For <strong>2012</strong>-<strong>2013</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />
tuition charge for incoming Master’s students is $18,410 per academic semester. Incoming students who are<br />
approved to attend on a part time basis are charged <strong>the</strong> per credit rate <strong>of</strong> $2,225. Continuing Master’s students<br />
(matriculants prior to 2011-<strong>2012</strong>) are charged <strong>the</strong> per credit rate <strong>of</strong> $1,217 and a per semester registration fee <strong>of</strong><br />
$2,980.<br />
TRANSCRIPT FEE<br />
All entering students will be charged a one-time mandatory fee <strong>of</strong> $40 for transcripts. This fee entitles <strong>the</strong><br />
student to an unlimited number <strong>of</strong> <strong>Duke</strong> transcripts. Requests for transcripts <strong>of</strong> academic records can be made via<br />
ACES, <strong>Duke</strong>’s online student records system. ACES can be accessed via <strong>the</strong> <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>Registrar</strong>’s<br />
Web page.<br />
STUDENT HEALTH FEE<br />
All full-time students and part-time degree candidates are assessed a fee each semester for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Student<br />
Health Service. For fall and spring <strong>the</strong> fee is estimated at $600 ($300 per semester). For summer <strong>the</strong> fee is estimated<br />
at $212. This fee is distinct from health insurance and does not provide major medical coverage.<br />
HEALTH INSURANCE<br />
Students will be charged for health insurance in <strong>the</strong> fall semester, unless pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r health insurance is<br />
provided. For <strong>2012</strong>-<strong>2013</strong>, health insurance is estimated to be $2,115 for <strong>the</strong> full year.<br />
STUDENT ACIVITY FEE<br />
All graduate students will be charged student activity fees <strong>of</strong> $16.25 per academic semester.<br />
RECREATION FEE<br />
All graduate students will be charged a recreation fee for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> on-campus facilities. The fee is $64.00 per<br />
semester.<br />
OTHER FEES<br />
Marine Laboratory Fee. For Marine Laboratory investigators’ research table fee, please contact <strong>the</strong> Nicholas<br />
