MIDPOINTE April 5, 2012 Page 10 More Sports An Outstanding Achievement On March 18th, Cai-Hong Singh became Winskill Dolphins Swim Club’s first able-bodied swimmer to qualify for the 2012 Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials! Because Cai-Hong missed the standard for the trials in her 100m and 200m Back Stroke by only 0.10 second, she was invited to participated in a Vancouver Dolphins time trial at UBC where she punched her ticket to Montreal in the 100m Back Stroke by clocking 1:03.20, her first Senior National standard in an Olympic event, and a new Winskill Dolphins Swim Club and Vancouver Dolphins Swim Club record for 13-14 year old Girls. Way to go Cai-Hong! School Team Warm-up Shirts The latest order of shirts has arrived! If you ordered a team warm-up shirt in March, please see Mr. McCall in the P.E. Office to collect it. Volunteer Coaches If you have any experience coaching track & field and would like to help out with one of our teams this spring, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Book Brains Go Global ! On Monday, April 2, we went to Langley and competed in the Grand Challenge. It was very exciting and we were all super nervous. We heard the DJ playing a song by Deadmau5. Everyone was cheering and clapping for all the teams. Once we sat down, we were all bubbling with excitement. The Reading Link Challenge started with the host talking for a bit and then the Quizmaster explained the rules. The challenge had started. The first, second and third rounds went quite swiftly. The host and quizmaster thought there was a winner, but then they announced that there would be a tie-breaker round. After the tie-breaker round, there was still no winner, so it went to sudden death. After only 1 question, a winner had been decided. Our muscles tightened and we hoped and prayed. When we heard “2nd place goes to…..the Book Brains!” we shrieked with joy. Even though we weren’t 1st place, we are all still very proud that we even made it this far. - Catherine Zuo “Open Gym” Sessions “Open Gym” sessions will take place from 3:30 – 5:00 pm on Fridays starting on April 13th. All Gr. 7 – 11 boys interested in playing on a school basketball team next year are encouraged to attend the basketball sessions and any MYP & GYP students interested in volleyball are invited to come out to the volleyball sessions. One group will be in the church gym and the other will use the school gym. Please contact Mr. McCall for more details. - Mr. Robert McCall, Director of Physical Education and Athletics ***As a result of placing second, the Book Brains will be competing in the Global Reading Challenge against the Grand Challenge winner and the winner of the Seattle Public Library Global Reading Challenge via videoconference on Friday, April 13. We wish them luck!
