• Rob Walton vs. Texas: 0-7
FIRST PITCH
The Golden Eagles look to climb over .500 for the first time this
season when they visit No. 7 Texas on Tuesday ... a victory would
also extend ORU’s season-long winning streak, which currently
stands at five games ... this is the fourth straight year in which ORU
and Texas have played during the regular season ... prior to 2007,
the Golden Eagles and Longhorns hadn’t met in regular-season
play since 2000 ... ORU head coach Rob Walton is looking for his
first victory over the Longhorns ... ORU has lost 15 straight games
to Texas ... ORU boasts five Texans on its 2010 roster: Robert Barbosa
(Dallas), Jameson Dunn (Carrollton), Mark Guest (Dallas), Colby
Price (Brenham), Bryce Smolen (Houston).
SCOUTING TEXAS
Texas is ranked No. 7 this week by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. The Longhorns are led by
Auggie Garrido, who is in his 14th season with Texas and 42nd overall. The all-time winningest coach in college
baseball history, Garrido enters Tuesday with a career record of 1,736-799-9. On the field, Texas once again
owns one of the top pitching staffs in the nation, as evidenced by the Longhorns’ 2.77 team ERA. Reliever
Chance Ruffin leads the pitching staff with a 0.68 ERA and a 4-1 record with six saves. Outfielder and lead-off
man Cohl Walla paces the Longhorns offense with a .385 batting average. Eight players have at least two home
runs, led by Jordan Etier’s six.
LAST TIME OUT
ORU swept a three-game series from North Dakota over the weekend, extending their winning streak to a
season-long five games. ORU out-scored the Fighting Sioux 26-15, and batted .349 during the weekend. The
pitching staff was solid, posting a 4.00 ERA. Junior RHP Bryce Smolen tossed his first career complete game
on Saturday, scattering six hits and allowing two earned runs while striking out seven. Junior OF Nick Baligod
went 5-for-11 and drew five walks in three games to lead the offense. Overall, ORU batters drew 23 walks more
than half their season total entering the weekend. Junior 3B Brett Sowers and senior OF Tyler Garewal each
finished the weekend on high notes. Sowers was 4-for-5 with two doubles on Sunday and Garewal belted a pair
of homers among his four hits in the series finale.
ORU AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
The Golden Eagles always face a tough non-conference schedule, and have held their own against ranked
opponents. Under Rob Walton, the Golden Eagles have posted a 27-48 record in 75 contests against
ranked teams the past six seasons. ORU tied its highest rated win under Walton on March 8, 2009 with
a 5-3 victory over No. 7 Rice in Houston.
BURLESON NAMED SUMMIT LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
ORU senior right-hander Jeff Burleson earned Summit League Pitcher of the Week honors after tossing
a complete game in Oral Roberts’ 8-1 win over No. 30 Wichita State. The senior allowed just five singles
and struck out seven with no walks for his first career nine-inning complete game. Burleson also tossed
one inning in relief in Sunday’s win over North Dakota and had eight strikeouts in 10.0 innings of work
with a 2.70 ERA for the week. On the season, Burleson is 2-2 with a 6.59 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 27.1
innings pitched.
