Basic skills in leather and ceramics and their<br />

evaluation and treatment techniques, self-care,<br />

use <strong>of</strong> activities and modalities as applied in<br />

occupational therapy practice.<br />

The role <strong>of</strong> the COTA in the community and<br />

health care systems play/leisure programs for<br />

older citizens. Duties and responsibilities in<br />

plan include programs to meet the sociophysical<br />

need <strong>of</strong> the well community as well as the hospitalized<br />

citizen. Appraisal <strong>of</strong> administrative<br />

needs and community resources.<br />

253 Therapeutic Interpersonal Skills (3) Fall II<br />

Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> first<br />

year <strong>of</strong> OTA program<br />

Interpersonal skills and use <strong>of</strong> group dynamics in<br />

occupational therapy practice. Includes the<br />

therapeutic use <strong>of</strong> self: evaluation <strong>of</strong> verbal and<br />

nonverbal behavior and its influence on therapeutic<br />

relationships; communication techniques;<br />

planning, leading, and reporting <strong>of</strong><br />

therapeutic activity groups for the full scope <strong>of</strong><br />

dysfunctional conditions.<br />

OCEANOGRAPHY (OCEAN)<br />

201 Science <strong>of</strong> the Sea (3)<br />

3 hours per week<br />

Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> MATH<br />

25 or high school algebra. It is strongly recommended<br />

that the student take a physical science<br />

course such as SCI 122 before enrolling in this<br />

course.<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> the science <strong>of</strong> oceanography involving<br />

the study <strong>of</strong> the geological, physical,<br />

chemical and biological properties <strong>of</strong> the ocean<br />

with emphasis on the importance <strong>of</strong> the ocean to<br />

human. Ecology and the natural resources <strong>of</strong> the<br />

ocean are other topics discussed.<br />

communication and interdepartmental functions,<br />

and guidance <strong>of</strong>fered in personality<br />

Improving the appearance and conduct <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

personnel to meet employer expectations.<br />

Emphasis on <strong>business</strong> etiquette and other individual<br />

aspects for better interpersonal relationships.<br />

50 Secretarial Procedures (4)<br />

6 hours per week<br />

Prerequisite: TYPW 40 or SHTHD 40 or concurrent<br />

enrollment<br />

A culminating course in secretarial science to<br />

develop an understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice procedures,<br />

work organization, interrelationship <strong>of</strong> departments,<br />

and production <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice work. Production<br />

level techniques, responsibilities common<br />

to secretarial work and administrative problems<br />

are emphasized.
