Admission Requirements for<br />

Foreign Students<br />

Since priority for admissions is given to <strong>Hawaii</strong><br />

residents, only a limited number <strong>of</strong> foreign students<br />

can be accepted. Compliance is necessary<br />

with all regulations <strong>of</strong> the Immigration and<br />

Naturalization Service pertaining to the individual's<br />

status, as well as with all regulations <strong>of</strong><br />

Kapiolani Community College.<br />

General Admissions Requirements as well as<br />

the following special requirements must be met<br />

by foreign applicants:<br />

1. Submit a (admissions) Supplementary<br />

Information Form for Foreign Applicants.<br />

2. Submit high school and college transcripts<br />

- Evidence <strong>of</strong> academic achievement<br />

equivalent to an American high school<br />

<strong>education</strong> is necessary. The foreign applicant<br />

must request his or her high school<br />

and college to forward directly to Kapiolani<br />

Community College a complete and<br />

certified English translation <strong>of</strong> his or her<br />

secondary school record. Transcripts that<br />

are issued to the applicant will not be<br />

accepted.<br />

3. Submit an Affidavit <strong>of</strong> Financial Support<br />

from a U.S. sponsor guaranteeing that no<br />

financial assistance will be needed and no<br />

employment will be required. Living<br />

expenses: housing, food, etc., are approximately<br />

$5,300 per year.<br />

4. Take a health examination and a chest xray<br />

within the six-month period just prior<br />

to application. The health form must be<br />

certified by a medical <strong>of</strong>ficial and a United<br />

States <strong>of</strong>ficial. (Evidence <strong>of</strong> good health by<br />

a doctor and a United States <strong>of</strong>ficial is at the<br />

student's expense.) HEALTH INSURANCE<br />

IS ALSO MANDATORY.<br />

5. Have <strong>of</strong>ficial test results on the Test <strong>of</strong><br />

English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) sent<br />

directly to Kapiolani Community College.<br />

Application and/or requests for scores on<br />

this test can be obtained by writing to Educational<br />

Testing Service, Box 592, Princeton,<br />

New Jersey, or by contacting the<br />

American consulate in your country.<br />

HANDCARRIED TEST RESULTS WILL NOT<br />

BE ACCEPTED BY THE OFFICE OF ADMIS-<br />

SIONS AND RECORDS.<br />

All <strong>of</strong> the above must be received by the<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> Admissions and Records by the<br />

following dates:<br />

Fall Semester - July 1<br />

Spring Semester - December 1<br />

Applicants will be notified by mail <strong>of</strong> their<br />

acceptance or non-acceptance.<br />

The applicant is responsible to see that all <strong>of</strong><br />

the previous requirements have been met as the<br />

college does not send reminders.<br />

All documents and transcripts submitted<br />

become the property <strong>of</strong> the College.<br />

Early Admissions Program<br />

High school seniors may enroll at Kapiolani<br />

Community College and earn college credits<br />

while in high school. Enrollment is limited to<br />

one or two courses on a space available basis for<br />

which prerequisites have been met. Recommendation<br />

to enroll at the College from the<br />

high school counselor or principal is required in<br />

order to be an early admission student. Also, the<br />

application form must be completed and filed at<br />

the Office <strong>of</strong> Admissions and Records for each<br />

semester <strong>of</strong> enrollment.<br />

Senior Citizen Tuition<br />

Exemption Program<br />

Senior citizens may attend any institution <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hawaii</strong> system on a tuitionexempt<br />

basis if they meet these conditions:<br />

1. Sixty years <strong>of</strong> age or older at time <strong>of</strong> registration<br />

for the course.<br />

2. Resident <strong>of</strong> the State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hawaii</strong> as prescribed<br />

by the <strong>University</strong>'s definition <strong>of</strong><br />

residency.<br />

3. Meet the prerequisites for admission and<br />

for enrollment in a course.<br />

4. Space is available in the course.<br />

Senior citizens may also take the course as an<br />

auditor.<br />

Admissions requirements are the same as for<br />

other applicants.<br />

The Senior Citizen Tuition Exemption program<br />

does not apply during the Summer<br />

Session.<br />

student may pay this fee if they wish to participate<br />

Tuition Payments<br />

For registration to be <strong>of</strong>ficial, all fees must be<br />

paid in full before the close <strong>of</strong> the final day <strong>of</strong><br />

registration. <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hawaii</strong> policy forbids<br />

deferred payment <strong>of</strong> tuition.<br />

Special Fees<br />

Late Registration Fee<br />

A $2.00 fee for late registration is charged<br />

when a student registers after the announced<br />

days <strong>of</strong> registration.<br />

Course-Change Fee<br />

For students substituting, adding, and/or<br />

deleting course(s)/credit(s): A fee <strong>of</strong> $1.00 shall<br />

be paid each time a student completes a Change<br />

<strong>of</strong> Registration form. This fee does not apply<br />

when a student withdraws from all <strong>of</strong> his/her<br />

courses.<br />

Books and Supplies<br />

The cost <strong>of</strong> books and supplies usually ranges<br />

from $50.00 to $80.00 per semester for a full-time<br />

student. Where uniforms are required in certain<br />

programs, it is the responsibility <strong>of</strong> the student<br />

to provide them.<br />

Graduation Fee<br />

A $5.00 fee is payable at the time <strong>of</strong> submitting<br />

an application for graduation. The fee is not<br />

refundable but is applicable to the next application<br />

if graduation is denied.<br />

Rental <strong>of</strong> Cap and Gown $5.00<br />

Transcript Fee<br />

No fee is charged for a request <strong>of</strong> transcript to<br />

be sent to another college within the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Hawaii</strong> <strong>System</strong>. A $1.00 fee is charged for a<br />

transcript that is to be sent outside <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Hawaii</strong> system.<br />

Fees for Dishonored Checks<br />

Checks made out to Kapiolani Community or<br />

any department <strong>of</strong> the college which are<br />

returned for any cause:<br />

Drawn on bank within State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hawaii</strong> $5.00<br />

Drawn on bank outside State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hawaii</strong> $10.00<br />

Fees for Noncredit Courses<br />

These fees vary according to the courses<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered and will be announced when courses<br />

are <strong>of</strong>fered.<br />

Financial Obligations<br />

Students who have not met their financial<br />

obligations at any college in the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Hawaii</strong> system (such as nonpayment <strong>of</strong> tuition<br />

and fees, fines, loans, or outstanding library<br />

obligations) may be denied graduation and further<br />

registration. Transcripts <strong>of</strong> courses taken at<br />

the college may also be withheld.<br />

Refund Policies<br />

Tuition and Special Course Fees Refund<br />

Policy-Regular Academic Semester<br />

In the event a student initiates before the fifth<br />

week <strong>of</strong> instruction a complete withdrawal from<br />

the college, change from full-time to part-time<br />

status, or change from one tuition rate to<br />

another, if applicable, tuition and special course<br />

fees are refunded as indicated below:<br />

1. 100% refund for complete withdrawal only<br />

if made on or before the last day <strong>of</strong> regular<br />

registration as announced in the registration<br />

information booklet.<br />

2. 80% refund if complete withdrawal or<br />

change in status or a change from one tuition<br />

rate to another tuition rate is made<br />

within the first two weeks <strong>of</strong> instruction.<br />

3. 40% refund if complete withdrawal or<br />

- change in status or a change from one tuition<br />

rate to another tuition rate is made<br />

within the third and fourth weeks <strong>of</strong><br />

instruction.<br />

4. 0% refund if complete withdrawal or<br />

change in status or a change from one tuition<br />

rate to another tuition rate is made<br />

after the fourth week <strong>of</strong> instruction.<br />

When changes by the college to the published<br />

schedule <strong>of</strong> classes precipitate a complete<br />

withdrawal, or a change from full-time to parttime<br />

status, or a change from one tuition rate to<br />

another tuition rate, and the changes to the<br />

published schedule have occurred after the student<br />

registered, tuition and special course fees<br />

are refunded as indicated below upon approval<br />

<strong>of</strong> the college's Dean <strong>of</strong> Instruction or the Dean<br />

<strong>of</strong> Students:<br />

1. 100% refund if complete withdrawal is<br />

necessary and if application for refund is<br />

made within two weeks <strong>of</strong> the date <strong>of</strong><br />

change(s) to the published schedule.<br />

2. The difference between the amount assessed<br />

at registration at the start <strong>of</strong> the semester<br />

and the amount assessed due to change<br />

in status or tuition rate if such a change is<br />

necessary and if application for refund is<br />

made within two weeks <strong>of</strong> the date <strong>of</strong> the<br />

change(s) to the published schedule.<br />

After the required approvals have been secured<br />

by the student, the application for refund<br />

must be submitted to the college's Business<br />

Office for payment. In no case shall payment <strong>of</strong> a<br />

refund be made when a student fails to make<br />

application for a refund within two weeks <strong>of</strong><br />

date <strong>of</strong> withdrawal, change in status, or change<br />

in tution rate.<br />

Student Activity Fee Refund Policy:<br />

1. 100% refund <strong>of</strong> student activity fee if complete<br />

withdrawal is made within the first<br />

two weeks <strong>of</strong> instruction.<br />

2. No refund <strong>of</strong> the student activity fee if<br />

complete withdrawal is made after the<br />

second week <strong>of</strong> instruction.<br />

Tuition and Special Course Fees Refund<br />

Policy-College <strong>of</strong> Continuing Education<br />

and Summer Session Courses<br />

1. For credit courses:<br />

a. 100% refund for complete withdrawal if<br />

made on or before the last working day<br />

before the first day <strong>of</strong> instruction.<br />

b. 80% or 40% refund in accordance with<br />

the schedule below, which is based on<br />

length <strong>of</strong> term <strong>of</strong> the course and the instructional<br />

day in which withdrawal is<br />
