Polished
The surface is refl ective, with a bright sheen. White
spots, veining and the remains of fossils all become
clearer after treatment. The colour of the stone is also
heightened.
Cleft
The surface is covered with fl akes and bulges, which
are irregularly shaped and irregularly spaced. This
fi nish can be used for paving, terraces, driveways,
wall plinths, cladding and interior fl oors.
Special
A special surface fi nishing for outdoor tiles, with a
bush-hammered centre and a honed border edging.
Flamed
A fl ame is placed on to the slab at an angle of 45°.
The thermal shock causes the exfoliation of the
surface granules, resulting in a roughened texture.
The remaining surface grains are rough, shiny and
irregular in shape. Flamed surfaces are mostly used
outdoors: for terraces (anti-slip), as a fl oor covering,
as ornamental elements, etc. The harder types of
natural stone (granite) are best suited to fl aming.
Anciento
Anciento is a fi nishing technique developed by
Brachot-Hermant. The slabs are fi rst sandblasted
and then brushed down. This results in a ‘softening’
of a rough surface. The remaining surface grains are
rough, shiny and irregular in shape, but the stone
feels soft to the touch. Anciento gives natural stone
a rustic appearance.
Honed
The slabs to be honed are sprinkled with water and
then subjected to treatment by a series of abrasive
heads. The grain size used on the abrasive heads
determines the fi nished appearance. The surface is
lightly refl ective, smooth and dull. There are no visible
grooves or other markings. A lightly honed fi nish is
usually preferred to a polished fi nish in rooms where
water on the fl oor can give rise to a danger of slipping
(e.g. bathrooms). Honed fl oor tiles are also frequently
used for areas of heavy pedestrian traffi c.
Calibrato
With the Calibrato process Brachot-Hermant supplies
an answer to the demand for light slabs and tiles. This
sophisticated production process allows natural stone
to be accurately calibrated to a thickness of as little
as 10 mm. Moreover, the slab – irrespective of its size –
is the same thickness over its full surface area.
Ground
This treatment removes saw marks and is carried out
under sprinkled water with diamond-tipped abrasive
plates or coarse grains. The result is a smooth surface,
without saw marks and patterned with fi ne circular
stripes.
Sawn
The surface is cut with a gang saw, a diamond wire
or a diamond circular blade (for smaller pieces). The
fi nished surface is marked with saw cuts, light waving
and stripes. Dependent upon the machine used,
these markings can be parallel (gang saw, diamond
wire) or circular (disc).
Sandblasted
In order to obtain the best results, the slabs to be
sandblasted are fi rst lightly honed (in order to remove
saw markings). The subsequent sandblasting produces
a surface with a rough but fi ne-grained appearance.
This fi nishing can be used on granite, blue stone and
white stone and is suitable for outdoor use.
Bush-hammered
The bush-hammer quite literally removes all traces of
any previous treatments. A mechanical hammer beats
the slabs and leaves behind a series of indentations
on the surface. The fi nal appearance can vary in
accordance with the size of hammer used, the number
of points on the hammerhead (coarse = 8, fi ne = 25)
and the force applied.
Diamond-sawn
The stone is sawn and then subjected to an abrasive
treatment, so that the saw cuts are smoothed out. This
surface fi nishing is used for outdoor applications.
Aged
A fi nish which results in tiles with a smooth centre
and an indented border. Saw cuts in the surface are
smoothed over. Depending on the stone type this
fi nish can be used both indoors and outdoors.
Tumbled
The pieces of stone are cut to size and then placed in
a large revolving cylinder. This roughens the edges of
the pieces, giving them an older look.
Letano
With its Letano process Brachot-Hermant has
introduced an innovative new fi nishing for granite. The
soft, brushed fi nish accentuates the natural colour of
the stone, while the sloped surface has a unique feel
of its own, equivalent to a “Leather Touch-feeling”.
Letano can be used for many different applications:
interior fl oors, bathrooms, wall coverings, kitchen
tops, etc.
CHOOSING NATURAL STONE
It took nature millions of years to create natural stone. Due to this
natural creation process, every block is unique: The underground
pressure, the crystallisation, the line structure etc. vary from place
to place.
In stone quarries around the world Brachot-Hermant searches for the
most beautiful that nature can offer. Every natural stone tells its own
story. Unbelievable colour shades, wonderful structures and an intense
tangible bond with the primal forces of the earth: Each slab is a
work of art created by the earth. The label Art by Nature represents
the most exclusive types of natural stone.
Brachot-Hermant distributes beautiful natural stone tiles from all
over the world. Choosing our products of granite, marble, limestone,
slate, basalt or blue stone, means choosing durability and aesthetic
quality.
In the choice of natural stone, not only do the aesthetic aspects
such as colour and appearance play a role, but also the technical
characteristics of the stone. The choice of type of natural stone
should take into account the area and function that the stone will
be used for: fl oor, wall, kitchen countertop, in a private home or in a
public building. For a detailed description we refer to the section ‘the
right choice of natural stone’ on page 14-19.
Tiles of natural stone from Brachot-Hermant meet the demands
of modern home comforts. To safeguard the quality for years it is
important that the natural stone is fi tted and cared for correctly. Your
supplier will have this information. The natural beauty of each natural
stone tile, in combination with the selected fi nish, is a guarantee for
years of problem-free enjoyment indoors and outdoors.
Choosing natural stone begins... today. This tile catalogue leads you
through the unique world of natural stone step by step.
more than 100 years of
craft manship
brachot-hermant
In 1901 Victor Hermant transformed an old water mill in the
Belgian town of Hour-Havenne into a sawmill for marble.
Water was diverted from the River Lesse to power the cutting
and polishing machines. The fi rm gradually expanded and in
1906 opened a branch offi ce in Brussels (B).
With four production plants (two in Belgium, one in Poland and
one in India), Brachot-Hermant can boast an impressively large
production capacity. Taken together, the four sites represent a
working area of some 65,000 m2 .
Thanks to its hyper-modern machinery, Brachot-Hermant is
able to market stone in eleven different types of fi nishing:
polished, ground, honed, sandblasted, fl amed, bushhammered,
chiselled, taille ancienne, frost fl owers, Anciento
and Letano .
In particular, the fact that production is concentrated in our
own hands at several points around the world allows us to
guarantee maximum quality, to meet our delivery deadlines
punctually and to respond fl exibly to the needs of the market.
the natural choice
Brachot-Hermant since 1901
Our cutting facilities house frame saws, diamond circle saws, diamond wire saws
and multi-circle saws. These are supplemented with polishing machines, fl ame and
hammering machines, an Anciento line and a resin line. Brachot-Hermant possesses several
different production lines for the manufacture of tiles and a separate production line for the
manufacture of skirtings. The production plant in Deinze (B) even has a calibration machine,
which allows the calibration of fi nished stone slabs to the same maximum size as the rough
stone block.
natural stone
fr om the four corners
of the world
brachot-hermant
The quarrying of some stone types takes place in extreme
climatic conditions: quarries near the equator can be
hot and wet, whereas the most northerly quarries can often
be covered by ice and snow. But the result is well worth the
effort: beautiful natural stone, which enhances the quality and
comfort of all our lives.
Brachot-Hermant is fully at home in this world of stone. With
more than 100 years of experience, its great technical expertise
and its dedicated and knowledgeable team of salesmen, it can
offer customers a range of services that are second to none.
Moreover, its ownership of quarries in Norway, France, Brazil
and India allows Brachot-Hermant access to top-quality stone
at source.
LARVIK GRANITE by Brachot-Hermant
the natural choice
Natural stone can be found in each of the seven continents: from the icy Labrador of
Norway to the blood-hot African Red of South Africa, from the sultry Giallo Veneziano
of Brazil to the mysterious Shivakasi of India. Millions of years were necessary for nature to
give each of these stone types its own specifi c texture and colour. This is what makes every
slab and every tile unique.
At home
in Europe
brachot-hermant
On an average day a total of 15,000 tons of natural stone
is ‘moved’ through our storage facilities. The effi cient
control of hundreds of different types of natural stone,
combined with the wide range of different fi nishings and a
strict timetable of deliveries, demands specialist expertise and
excellent process management. For this reason, the Production
and Administrative Departments have at their disposal the very
latest logistical software.
In particular, the depots and the national sales teams ensure
that close contact is kept with local markets. This gives Brachot-
Hermant the opportunity to react quickly and professionally to
the specifi c needs and wishes of different regions.
All staff in the storage facilities are thoroughly trained to receive
and dispatch goods/materials safely and effi ciently. To allow
Brachot-Hermant to pursue a policy of just-in-time deliveries,
the company possesses its own fl eet of lorries.
At Brachot-Hermant ‘stock’ is not just a word: it is a concept. Our customers can choose from
a permanently available supply of some 200,000 m2 of slabs and tiles and approximately
12,000 m3 of blocks. In Deinze (B), but also in Hour-Havenne (B), Poland and India, hundreds
of blocks of granite, marble, blue stone, slate, etc. from all over the world stand ready
for immediate processing and shipment. These blocks represent a sawn surface area of
300,000 m2 .
choosing the corr ect
natural stone
brachot-hermant
Natural stone is a collective name for thousands of different
types of stone, found and quarried throughout the world.
The appearance and the characteristics of natural stone are
determined by the manner in which the stone was formed: by
rivers, by volcanoes, by tectonic folding (mountains).
Each natural stone is unique, because no two places on earth
have precisely the same geological composition or experience
precisely the same geological forces. This means that natural
stone of the same type can also differ widely.
The scientifi c classifi cation divides natural stone into three
categories: magmatic rock, which was created by the cooling
of liquid magma; sedimentary rock, which was created by the
compression of loose fragments of existing stone or by the
deposition of lime particles in water; and metamorphic rock,
which was created by the transformation of existing magmatic
or sedimentary rock under high temperature and/or pressure.
For commercial purposes, natural stone is divided into several
large groups: granite, marble, limestone, basalt and slate are
the most important.
GRANITE
The large group of the granites consists largely of magmatic
rocks which were formed by the cooling of magma deep
in the earth’s crust. Their outward appearance is usually
dappled. Some granites are also metamorphic in origin,
having been created by the transformation of existing
magmatic rock under high pressure (for example, during
the development of mountain ranges). These metamorphic
granites are typical for their variegated colouring and their
fl amed structure, which makes every individual tile/slab
unique. All the granites are renowned for their outstanding
technical qualities.
MARBLE
The group of the marbles contains both metamorphic
and sedimentary rocks, all of which are composed of
calciferous particles (calcite). Marble is a relatively
homogenous and compact natural stone. Because it
is relatively easy to work, but also because of its wide
variety of different colours (red, white, pink, etc.), it has
found many applications in the building industry: fl oors,
staircases, fi replaces etc.
BLUE STONE
Blue stone is a dark and compact limestone, available in
many different fi nishings (from polished to rough worked).
This specifi c limestone was created by an accumulation of
fossil material in a particularly dark ground sort. In addition
to the famous Belgian Blue Stone, stone of this type is
also quarried commercially in Vietnam and Ireland. Blue
stone is suitable for staircases (indoors and outdoors),
fi replaces, doorsteps etc.
LIMESTONE
Limestones are sedimentary rocks created by the
accumulation and compression of fossils and/or stone
fragments, such as quartz and calcite. The WHITE STONES
also consist of compressed accumulations of fossils and/
or calcite fragments, with a texture which is soft and
easily workable. Certain types are suitable for both indoor
and outdoor use. The majority of these limestones cannot
be polished and are delivered with a lightly honed fi nish.
The best known examples are the French white limestones,
but other high quality types are available from Portugal,
Turkey etc. These types can be used for fl ooring, fi replaces,
statues etc.
BASALT
Basalts are magmatic rocks, created by the cooling of
liquid magma on the earth’s surface. Because this cooling
was relatively rapid, the minerals in the rock had little time
to complete the crystallisation process. This has resulted
in a fi ne-grained appearance. In general, basalts are nonporous,
hard and capable of fi nishing in several different
manners. Their uses include fl ooring (indoors and outdoors),
wall covering etc.
SLATE
There are many different types of slate, dependent
upon the clay from which they were formed. Slates are
highly layered in structure. This gives the surface a ‘split’
appearance, but a honed fi nishing is also possible. This
makes the slates suitable for indoor and outdoor fl ooring,
and also for use as wall covering.
15
the natural choice
16
THE RIGHT CHOICE OF NATURAL STONE
COLOUR
Every tile in natural stone is unique due to the
natural forming of the material. The colour is
100% natural. It is the different minerals in the
natural stone that create the colour (pallet).
There are no two tiles the same! Even in one
quarry the colour can differ within one type of
stone because of the geological composition of
the stone.
The colour also has a different visual impact.
Light colours enlarge an area, dark colours do
the opposite.
TEXTURE
The origin of a stone and the geological history
are decisive for the texture. Take for instance
basalt or granite: both stones are derived from
solidifi ed magma, but granite has a different
geological history than basalt. That is why there
is no visual similarity. Granite appears mostly
speckled. This is because the mineral grains
– in different sizes – are obviously different.
Basalt on the other hand is very fi nely grained in
appearance because crystallisation of minerals
has hardly taken place. Marbles have a ‘softer’
appearance. This is characterised in the veins
throughout the stone mass. Limestone has
fossils such as shells and coral.
SURFACE FINISH
The surface fi nish in natural stone strongly
infl uences the look of the material, but also
plays a big part in the choice of material for
a certain use. For exterior use, for example, a
rougher surface is preferable due to the slip
danger. With a rougher fi nish the stones are
lighter in colour. For decorative interior fi nishes
it is better to choose a polished fi nish, which
brings out the colour and structure of the natural
stone better. Take into account that a rough
surface is less easy to maintain, and a polished
surface in busy walkways will show scratches
and wear quicker!
Calibrato
With Calibrato Brachot-Hermant offers the
answer to the need for lightweight slabs and
tiles. The advanced production process allows
perfect grading of natural stone slabs and tiles
to a thickness of only 10 mm. The slab, whatever
its size, will have an exact even thickness.
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The composition and characteristics of the
natural stone greatly infl uence the defi nite
choice. For certain applications the acidresistance
(in the kitchen) or the absorption
(kitchen and bathroom) plays a great role.
These characteristics are directly linked to the
composition of the natural stone.
Not all natural stone sorts are frost-proof. This
is, however, a necessity for a patio tile. Certain
softer natural stone types cannot be used for
the fl oor because of their low wear-resistance.
For more information on technical characteristics
and applications see also TV 228 on
www.bbri.be.
MEASUREMENTS
Measurements play a part in the choice of
natural stone tile also. Large sizes enlarge
an area. Smaller sizes give the opposite effect.
Natural stone for fl oor and wall use
can be obtained in tiles in squares or random
lengths. In areas that are often open to
temperature differences (for example fl oor
covering near large windows, above fl oor
heating or on a patio) we recommend square
tiles (see also Technical Specifi cation TV 213
from the BBRI (Belgian Building Research Institute).
Random lengths are not as suitable for
these areas.
The thickness of the natural stone is decided in
function to the strengths involved and the necessary
stability. For renovations (where thickness
and possible weight play a great role) and/or
glued applications there are graded, thin natural
stones.
INTERIOR FLOORS
Floors in hall and living rooms are well-trodden
surfaces. A polished surface will wear quicker
than a rougher surface. It is important to have
a mat in the hall by the entrance so that dirt and
sand from outside can be caught, and thus avoid
wear. Take into account, during laying, that the
fl oor above fl oor heating will encounter greater
thermal tension. We suggest in this case not
to choose random lengths, but square tiles and
to work with continuous joints. Provide enough
joint expansion in large areas.
In a small corridor, elongated tiles, which are
laid parallel with the walls, create optically a
17
the natural choice
18
narrowing effect. The laying of elongated tiles
perpendicular to the walls creates optically an
enlarging effect.
THE KITCHEN COUNTER TOP
When choosing the kitchen counter top take
into account a higher risk of staining and
acidic products (vinegar, lemon, etc), and
an intensive use. Choose preferably granite
(hard, less porous, acid-proof) rather than
marble/limestone (softer, not acid-proof) and
treat the natural stone precautionary with an
impregnating agent in order to make it water
and fat repellent.
THE KITCHEN FLOOR
The kitchen is the place one walks around
in most. We advise choosing a rough (not
glossy) surface to reduce the risk of wear.
Treat the natural stone precautionary with an
impregnating agent to make it water and fat
repellent.
THE BATHROOM
Humidity in the bathroom can be very high.
Choose less absorbent natural stone varieties
and take the necessary care when tiling. Give
the natural stone a water repellent treatment
after tiling, and in shower applications you
should make sure that the entire construction is
waterproof (more importantly when fi tting the
shower cubicle and the tabs). Scale on marble?
Use acid-free cleaning products!
THE BATHROOM FLOOR
For fl oors in bathrooms it is very important that
they are slip-proof. Polished natural stone is
slippery, especially when the surface is humid
as well. We advise a non-polished fl oor (e.g.
rough, Anciento or Letano ). A precautionary
treatment of the fl oor in order to make the
surface water-repellent provides a longer
enjoyment of your natural stone.
THE PATIO
Natural stone tiles lie directly on a frozen subsoil
and therefore have to pass the most stringent
frost tests. Because patio tiles are exposed to
large thermal tensions (cooling down at night
and warming up during the day result in shrinking
and expanding of the tiles), it is preferable to
choose square tiles. Keep continuous joints and
do not work in a crossways pattern. Provide
enough joint expansion! Patio tiles should also
be treated for slip-danger. So choose a rougher
surface fi nish such as fl amed, hammered…
Thickness of the patio tiles depends on the
stability of the subsoil, on the laying structure
and on the weight one might expect on the
patio. With classic laying and normal weight
(just people, no cars), a thickness of 2 cm
suffi ces. For fi tting on tile supports you need a
greater thickness, and for driveways you should
choose a thickness of 5 cm or more.
FAÇADE CLADDING
For façade cladding the natural stone needs to
be frost-resistant, but because the stone does
not come directly in contact with the frozen
subsoil, a larger variety is suitable for façade
cladding than for a patio. Take into account that
porous natural stone will get dirty easier than
the compact variety. On the coast, for example,
wind and sand will cause quicker wear of the
façade. In coastal areas you should therefore
opt for a more hardened variety of natural stone.
Is your façade salt-proof? Choose less porous
material, so that crystallisation of these salts in
the pores is reduced.
The thickness of the natural stone depends on
the type of fi tting, the power of the wind, the
weight of the elements etc. It’s best to seek the
advice of a professional.
The temperatures deep beneath the earth’s
crust are extremely high. As a result, stone at
this depth is only to be found in liquid form. This
red-hot, liquid stone is known by the generic term
‘magma’. Via a series of so-called ‘weak spots’
in the crust, this magma attempts to rise to the
surface. These weak spots can be volcanoes or
some other ‘split’ in the earth’s outer skin.
However, in many places the continental plates
are simply too thick to allow the magma to
escape. It remains trapped under the ground,
gradually cools (from a temperature of more
than 1,000° C) and eventually solidifi es. In this
manner, magmatic plutonic rock is formed.
The relatively slow speed of the cooling allows
large crystals to develop, measuring from a few
millimetres to 1-2 centimetres. This development
gives the granites in question a speckled or
dappled appearance.
The earth’s crust is made up of a number of
continental plates, which are continually in
movement. When these plates collide, they
create huge underground stresses, which can
result in earthquakes. A similar process was involved
in the creation of mountains. The stresses
related to these phenomena are immense, so
much so that they can change the structure and
appearance of stone trapped underground.
Magmatic plutonic rock which was transformed
in this pressurised manner is known as metamorphic
granite. Metamorphic granite can easily be
recognised by its spectacular fl amed structure
in different colours.
If you choose a granite fl oor, you will be
choosing a fl oor which radiates luxury and
charm, whilst at the same time offering a maximum
of comfort and ambience. Granite requires
almost no maintenance, is resistant to intensive
use and remains visually attractive in all circumstances.
It is acid-free, scratch-resistant and almost
non-porous.
Granite is highly suitable for external use, being
frost resistant as well as water repellent.
‘The Marble City’: this is how the ancient Rome
of the emperors was frequently described. And
indeed, marble has been associated with luxury
and comfort since ancient times. Palaces,
country homes and luxury hotels were - and
often still are - excessively decorated with
marble fl oors, marble facades, marble statues,
etc.
In simple, everyday language the term ‘marble’
is used to describe a limestone which is capable
of being polished. However, true marble is not
a limestone: it is a metamorphic variant of
limestone.
Metamorphosis means ‘change’. In a geological
context, metamorphic change means a change
in the minerals, the structure or the chemical
composition of a stone, usually under extreme
temperature or pressure (such as are released
during the creation of mountains). The result
is the formation of a completely new kind of
stone.
Marble is a metamorphic rock, with a limestone
origin. It is this fact which often leads to confusion
between the two types of stone. Whilst it is true
that marble and limestone do share a number
of common features - for example, neither of
them is particularly resistant to acid - there are
nonetheless more differences than similarities.
Marble is “harder”, more homogenous and more
compact than limestone (due to its exposure
to high temperatures and pressure). This also
makes it easier to work and helps to account for
the typical ‘lightness’ it exudes.
Marble is never obtrusive or excessive. On the
contrary, it is elegant, timeless - and much
more affordable than many people think. The
passage of time simply makes a marble fl oor
even more beautiful: a process of ‘ageing
gracefully’ which can be seen in classical
buildings throughout the world. Marble fl oors are
available in many different colours (red, white,
pink, etc.), are resistant to normal use and (with
correct treatment) are almost maintenance-free.
In 1941 Walter Kent and Nat Burton composed
their famous and melancholy song, ‘The White
Cliffs of Dover’. These spectacular and beautiful
cliffs, rising more than 20 metres out of the
sea along many kilometres of coastline near the
English port of Dover, were often the last sight
that many British soldiers had of their homeland
during the two world wars.
Calcite is the common chemical component of
chalk, limestone and the other ‘marble-type’
stones. This latter term refers to the group of
highly compact, marble-like limestones which
are capable of being polished. These
substances are all related to each other
geologically, but they can all have different
properties. Chalk and lime can be soft and
granular; limestone and the other ‘marble-type’
stones can be compact and hard.
Limestone is a sedimentary rock. Sediment is
the name for particles or grains transported
and deposited by wind or water. Lime, sand
and grit are all examples of sediment. Chemical
processes cause the particles of sediment to
cling together. These processes are very slow,
but can eventually lead to the creation of hard
stone. This is what happened – over several
million years – during the formation of limestone:
a stone you never grow tired of looking at.
There is something Mediterranean about a
limestone fl oor. It is a simple but stylish natural
stone, which can bring a special charm to any
interior. The most typical features of a limestone
fl oor are the veining and the fossilised remains
of plants and animals. As with marble, fl oors in
limestone have the ability to ‘age gracefully’.
They are also resistant to normal use and are
easy to maintain.
Although limestone is ‘softer’ than granite, the
selection of natural stones made by Brachot-
Hermant is suitable for numerous applications.
‘From mud to stone’ is a simplistic (and slightly
unfair) description of the process involved in
the creation of slate. Yet it also contains a good
deal of truth. The basis of slate is clay mud, a
substance with much water and a high level of
porosity. Under the pressure created by the
later deposition of other material during millions
of years, the water was eventually pressed out
of the clay layers. The result was a rock known
as clay stone or shale.
The enormous forces involved during later mountain
chains formation, further changed the form
and structure of this shale. So it was that slate
came into being – a stone whose most unique
characteristic is the ease with which it can be
split.
There are various types of slate, depending
upon the type of clay from which they originate.
Important factors are the organic content, the
grain size and the mineralogy. Other properties
related to these matters include ‘splitability’,
frost-resistance and hardness. Moreover, slate is
water repellent and light resistant.
The naturally split surface is slightly rough, but
is pleasing to both the touch and the eye. As
with limestone, slate is a stone which you never
grow tired of looking at. Its durability and its
sober beauty are long-lasting. Moreover, slate
is water repellent and light resistant. The highly
layered structure of slate gives the surface a
‘split’ appearance, which makes it suitable for
interior fl oors. Because the stone is ‘fatty’ and
contains few pores, it is easy and practical to
maintain.
Because slate is water repellent and light
resistant, it is also suited for terraces. Not
all slates are frost resistant. The selection of
Brachot-Hermant is nevertheless frost resistant.
Magma can best be described as hot and
liquid stone, found deep beneath the earth’s
crust. This magma tries to make its way to the
earth’s surface, via so-called ‘weak spots’, such
as volcanoes or other natural fi ssures. When the
magma comes into contact with water or air it
cools rapidly, leading to the creation of solid
stone. This stone is known as basalt.
Most famously in Iceland and Hawaii, but also in
India and at several other locations around the
globe, it is still possible to see the spectacular
solidifi ed remains of gigantic lava fl ows, sometimes
kilometres long. Pure natural beauty.
Because of the rapid cooling process, the
minerals in basalt had insuffi cient time to
crystallise fully, in contrast with granite, also
a magmatic rock. Granite originates from the
cooling of magma in the earth’s crust.
This incomplete crystallisation gives the stone a
fi nely grained appearance. The intense colour
also lends it a unique and much-prized quality.
Most types (but by no means all) are hard and
only slightly porous, making them ideal for use
as interior fl oors and a terrace tile. The selection
offered by Brachot-Hermant meets the necessary
requirements.
Blue stone, like limestone, is a sedimentary
deposit. Formed many hundreds of millions of
years ago, it is a silent witness to the evolutionary
processes of the earth.
Blue stone is full of the remains of petrifi ed
shells and plants, which can still be seen in the
polished surface of the fi nished tile. In general,
blue stone is hard but it is also easy to work,
making it much valued amongst artists and
sculptors. Colours range from shades of blue
to almost black, depending upon the chosen
fi nish. Blue stone is a much-loved type of natural
stone, with a long and successful tradition.
In the past, numerous churches, abbeys and
other monumental buildings were decorated with
blue stone fl oors. In more recent years, many
interior designers have rediscovered the charm
of these patina-tiled fl oors for domestic use. It
is also popular for terrace fl oors and swimming
pool borders.
Blue stone is a natural stone with a simple,
honest and natural elegance. Moreover, the
older it gets, the more beautiful it becomes. In
addition, it is hard wearing and almost impervious
– and therefore ideal as a fl ooring material.
