BISHOP DUBOURG HIGH SCHOOL
Greetings from Bishop DuBourg,
With the end of one semester and the beginning of a new year, the students, faculty, and staff continue the
56th year of this wonderful school that has been home to over 20,000 alumni. Bishop DuBourg High School
offers a unique atmosphere for students in the area. Today, as it has been since its existence, Bishop DuBourg
is a place for families, and just as it has been historically, we, today, get brothers and sisters of current students
and alumni.
With nearly one-third of our student population being the children of a Bishop DuBourg alumni it is not hard
to understand why the concept of family is at the core of our existence. Students are challenged aggressively
in their academics here at the school, and are educated in a manner that prepares them for college. With
the addition of new faculty, we are now able to offer out students more advanced college credit hours than
ever. Bishop DuBourg High School now offers over 40 more hours of advanced college credit courses that are
accepted by most colleges and universities. We are very proud of our relationship with St. Louis University
and the University of Missouri-St. Louis in this college credit program, and we believe it offers our families
an affordable jump start on college.
The friendships that are forged at Bishop DuBourg High School are ones that often last a lifetime. The
“Bishop DuBourg Family” is rooted in these very friendships. Our students today are very much like the students
that have been attending Bishop DuBourg High School for 56 years; they are respectful, hardworking,
faith-filled young men and women who aspire to be the most successful that they can be. Success is sometimes
not measured by students’ G.P.A or class rank, but rather in the growth and maturity that comes to
them during their time at Bishop DuBourg High School.
As a member of the “Bishop DuBourg Family,” I like to ask each of you to keep the students in your thoughts
and prayers throught this new year. Pray that they face challenges head on with passion and love in Christ
and that the remainder of this school year is most successful.
In Service to Christ,
Message from Steve Frank ’66
Chairman of the Board of Directors
Greetings to all alumni, parents, and friends of
Bishop DuBourg High School … the new school year
has started and it is always a pleasure to share information
about activities at DB with members of our DB
Family. As members of this wonderful family, we ask
for your continuing support of the High School and the
young men and women who walk its halls today.
Our school was opened by the Archdiocese in 1950
as a Catholic high school primarily serving south St.
Louis city and county students valuing a Catholic education.
Inspired by Christ, Bishop DuBourg High School develops leaders in faith
and service through a Catholic, co-educational community of excellence. Our mission
remains strong and our commitment steadfast.
The Board of Directors works in an advisory capacity with the President and the
Administration to position Bishop DuBourg to continue to provide this vital service
to our St. Louis community. Our primary focus and role has been to assist in the
areas of strategic planning, financial management, facilities management and planning,
fund raising, and technology. This year we are adding a new committee for
academics to examine long-term goals and objectives on school curriculum, technology,
and best practices in teaching.
Our Board members are appointed to serve on one or more of the several
Committees structured around these subject areas that best match their respective
talents, skills and experience. We invite members of our DB Family who have skills
or experience in any of these areas that are interested in volunteering their services
to contact Mr. Boschert. We would also appreciate your recommendations of other
members of our DB Family with these qualifications whom you believe might be
interested in serving.
We encourage you to come by and visit your school to catch the enthusiasm of
the Faculty and Student Body and see the many improvements to our school’s facilities.
We guarantee you that the memories will come flooding back!
As a member of the DB Family we thank you for your continuing support of the
mission, and for continuing to embrace and sharing the great tradition and history
of the DB Family. We invite you to come home again soon.
Sincerely,
Steven N. Frank ‘66
Chairman, Board of Directors

From the President
Have you ever been on a long trip away from your
family? The trip home is filled with anticipation,
excitement about returning to your family, relief at once
again being in the comfortable confines of your home,
and a finality of being where you belong. You can imagine
that after nearly twenty-five years in the military and
twenty-seven years away from our hometown, St. Louis,
the Boschert family has experienced many such family
separations, and we have. But, just like the weary traveler
who returned home from his/her long trip, there was great
anticipation and relief when the journey was over and we
returned to our loved ones and the comfortable confines
of St. Louis. For Mary Ann and I, it took sixteen moves
(yes, sixteen) to return to the place where we grew up and
where our families remained.
Along the way, each move triggered a whole host of
thoughts and questions. What will the schools be like? Will
our Greg and Becky fit into their new schools? Will I like my
job? Will the family be happy with the
new home? And one of the most
important questions, will we be
accepted by the community? In
some respects, my move to
Bishop DuBourg High School
Every day, I meet someone new
who is welcoming and enthusiastic
about the great things happening
at Bishop DuBourg.
triggered many of the same emotions and apprehensions.
However, the entire Bishop DuBourg FAMILY has made this
move one of the most positive experiences in my life. Every
day, I meet someone new who is welcoming and enthusiastic
about the great things happening at Bishop DuBourg.
People show up at my door to introduce themselves or to
show me something they have done for Bishop DuBourg.
This process has impressed me and has gone a long way to
assuage any concerns I might have had about moving to
this storied school. The people of Bishop DuBourg have
accepted and welcomed my wife and me as family members
of this legendary institution. For that, we are relieved
and grateful.
For those of you who are new to Bishop DuBourg, I sincerely
hope you have the same positive experience Mary
Ann and I have had. There are few places we have lived and
visited where we have been made to feel so welcomed. For
those of you who are returning to our family, I encourage
you to find a new “family member” and help to make
their move to Bishop DuBourg a memorable one. This
is the tradition Bishop DuBourg is known for, and you
are an integral part in carrying on that tradition.
Once again, thank you to everyone who has welcomed
us to the Bishop DuBourg family. This is
truly a place where we belong.
Sincerely,
Kirk Boschert,
Schackmann Family Remembers Bishop DuBourg
The Schackmann daughters present Principal, Bridget Timoney, with a check
for $500,000. Pictured l to r: Karen (Schackmann) Van Rite ’74, Bridget
Timoney, Mary (Schackmann) Swan ’71, Margaret (Schackmann) Adams and
Paula (Schackmann) Standley ’76.
Adam and Teresa Schackmann
were just like many parents who
sent their children to Bishop DuBourg
High School. They made sacrifices for
their four daughters, Mary
(Schackmann) Swan ’71, Karen
(Schackmann) Van Rite ’74, Paula
(Schackmann) Standley ’76, and
Margaret (Schackmann) Adams, to
attend a Catholic high school. The
girls walked to school everyday, and
participated in co-curricula’s such as
theatre, while still maintaining family
and household responsibilities.
As they grew older and their children
began families of their own,
they remembered the value that
Bishop DuBourg High School had in
the lives of their daughters. As a
result, they began an endowed scholarship
in the late 1980’s. Committed
to wanting to make a difference in
the lives of Bishop DuBourg students,
Adam & Theresa, managed
the endowment very
frugally and grew the endowment
over time. Fifteen plus
years after its inception, and
following the loss of Adam
After the Mass of
Thanksgiving, the
Schackmann daughters
gather in the lobby to
remember their family.
4 The Cavalier
and Theresa, the endowment had
grown to over $500,000.
The endowment was given to the
Archdiocese with a very specific
request that the funds benefit their
daughters’ schools. Complying with
the Schackmann wishes, the
Archbishop has allocated the endowment
funds to Bishop DuBourg High
School. The money generated
through the Adam and Theresa
Schackmann Endowment benefits
students with a financial need, as
qualified through an on-line financial
aid application. “It was always my
father’s wish that the money they contributed
go to Bishop DuBourg High
School. He had a real appreciation
and gratitude for Catholic education,”
said Mary Swan ’71. Mary added,
“Our parents came from very modest
means, and were very frugal. They
were only able to make this gift
because they saved their money, and
my father invested it very wisely.”
While it may have been Adam’s
wish that enabled the Schackmanns to
make this gift, it was certainly their
heart that led them back to Bishop
DuBourg High School. “This most
generous gift is the largest single gift to
Bishop DuBourg High School in its
history from an individual. The story
of the Schackmann family is a great
one, because it talks about people who
didn’t have tremendous wealth, yet let
their gratitude make a difference,” said
Jim Welby ’94, Director of Advancement.
“Their family will forever be
remembered by the current students.
This gift will truly make a difference in
the lives of our students.”
The Shackmann’s were remembered
and honored at an all school
mass of Thanksgiving on Friday,
February 10, 2006. At that mass, the
four Schackmann daughters presented
Bishop DuBourg High School
with a check for $500,000. The
endowment continues to grow today
to just over $550,000, and benefits students
in need.

Area Clergy Gather at DB in Thanks
On Tuesday, March 28, 2006 Bishop DuBourg High
School hosted its Second Annual Clergy Appreciation
Luncheon. Diocesan priests from area parishes were
invited to attend a luncheon with fellow priests to celebrate
a moment of thanksgiving with each other. The luncheon
was created as an opportunity for Bishop DuBourg High
School to say thank you to the area clergy who have and
continue to develop a great Christian value system in the
young men and women of the area today, many of whom
attend Bishop DuBourg.
Nearly forty priests joined administrators and school
leadership in the afternoon lunch which included a welcoming
address by Vice-President Fr. Mike Lydon. The
afternoon serves as an opportunity for the family of priests
to gather and enjoy a couple of hours of fellowship away
from meetings, agendas, and parish duties. The luncheon
has been well received over the past two years, and will
ber of the Investment Committee of
University School of Law, Vice-
Chairman of Zea Vision, LLC; and
Chairman of the Bishop DuBourg
High School Board of Directors.
Steve has been active in the soccer
world throughout his life. In addition
to his soccer accomplishments at St.
Louis University, Steve is also a member
of the St. Louis Soccer Hall of
Fame. Steve played professionally
with the St. Louis Stars of the North
American Soccer League and for the
US World Cup Soccer Team having
played and defended against Pele.
Steve and his wife Mary, have
three children: Emily, an attorney in
Congressional committee in
Washington D.C., and Steven, a staff
member at the U.S. House of
Representatives.
again be held next spring.
This luncheon also allows students of Bishop DuBourg
High School to reconnect with the priests from their parish
in a different setting. The connections create a great
atmosphere that adds to the bonding of students at DB
back to their parishes.
A Legacy to Celebrate
Keeping it All in the Family
Bishop DuBourg High School has
long had a very unique atmosphere
about it. Since opening its doors
in 1950 on the grounds of Jefferson
Barracks, and later opening up the
campus on Hampton and Eichelberger
in 1954, there has always been
very much a “family” atmosphere. The
Bishop DuBourg family is one with
20,000+ members that are in some
form or another still largely connected
to each other. This was no more evident
than at Commencement on
Tuesday, May 23, 2006.
During the Commencement excercises
held at the St. Louis Cathedral,
Legacy Families were honored. A
legacy family is a family in which a
graduating senior is the son or daughter
or grandson or granddaughter of a
Bishop DuBourg Alumnus. These
families are honored individually during
the mass and ceremony. They are
called to the sanctuary to receive special
recognition by a crowd of nearly
1,200. This year over 31% of the graduating
class were legacies.
This recent tradition of recognizing
alumni who have sent their children
to Bishop DuBourg High School at
Commencement began last year
where over 33% of the graduating
class were legacies. Each graduating
senior and his or her parent receive an
award and have a photo in the sanctuary
of the New Cathedral to keep as a
memory for a lifetime.
Dick ’69 and Debbie ’73 Wehner
were one of the legacy parents recognized
at graduation with their daughter,
Emma ’06. Dick commented, “It
was really one of the neatest experiences
I’ve had with my daughter.
Walking up to the sanctuary at the
Cathedral filled me with great pride and
a great sense of accomplishment for
what Emma had done.” Wehner added,
“People always want something better
for their children than what they had.
This is the case at Bishop DuBourg
High School. It is better than when I
Legacy Reception.
I’m even more proud that she
graduated from where her
mother and I did.”
went there. There are great people
there who care and love and develop
our children. I’m proud of my Emma,
and I’m even more proud that she
graduated from where her mother and
I did.”
Legacy families were presented
their awards by long time members of
the administration Tom Jokerst and
Gerry Gruszka. Last year Floyd
Hacker presented the awards, but was
vacationing during Commencement
this year. From Jefferson Barracks to
the current campus, Bishop DuBourg
High School has created a large family
that stays connected in so many ways
over the years. It is especially cherished
when those families come
home with their children to attend
Bishop DuBourg.

The Award Goes to…
The Critics and Awards Program
(Cappies) is for high school theatre
students and students interested
in writing. Started six years ago in
Washington, D.C., it now has groups
in fifteen metropolitan areas in the
U.S. This is the second year for the
program in the St. Louis region and
Bishop DuBourg’s first year.
Each school may enter two plays a
year for review by the Cappies Critics.
Teams consist of six students from a
school. Fifteen to twenty students,
managed by two adult mentors,
attend and review a show. The local
newspaper, Post Dispatch, publishes
one student review for each show.
This year in St. Louis, thirty six shows
at seventeen schools were attended
and reviewed by student critics.
Critics discuss and evaluate the
show in multiple performance and
technical categories. At the end of the
season all the critics gather to vote.
The top five in each category are
nominees and attend a Cappies Gala.
There they are all introduced and perform
an opening and closing musical
number, similar to the Academy
Awards or Tony Awards. All nominees
and schools receive certificates, and
medals, and trophies are awarded to
the winners announced at the Gala.
The Gala this year was held at the
Touhill Performing Arts Center at
UMSL on Sunday, May 7th. Dress was
formal with a reception afterwards to
make the evening special for all.
Bishop DuBourg entered two plays
in the program this year — The Last
Night of Ballyhoo and Much Ado
About Nothing — and both were nominated
for “Best Play of the Year.” The
Guild also was nominated in three
tech categories — lighting, makeup,
and props — and five acting categories,
two lead roles, two featured
roles, two comic roles, one cameo
role, one group in ensemble acting.
junior this year at Bishop
DuBourg High School. She is
excited to continue her educational
career and spiritual
life at DB. “Bishop DuBourg
High School is a great place
to make friends, get an education
and grow spiritually. I
know there are new challenges
and achievements
waiting for me. I am looking forward to taking different
classes, like Astronomy and making new friends.”
When Ana is not in the classroom, she is very active in
athletics. She plays Basketball, Soccer and Softball. One of
Ana’s favorite memories of DB is competing in the Soccer
State Championship her freshman year. “It was very exciting.
It was a great feeling to compete at that level as a freshman.
I will never forget that moment.”
Ana’s family is no stranger to the Bishop DuBourg community.
Her mom, Barb (Krus) graduated in 1982. She
played softball during her years at DB and was recently
inducted into the Hall of Fame. Ana’s brother, Paul, just
graduated in 2006. Her brother, Luke, is a sophomore and
she has three brothers in grade school, Peter, Quenten and
Max, who are waiting in the wings to enter Bishop
DuBourg High School. “My family has and is always there
for me. My parents attend as many of our games as possible.
They are our greatest fans,” Ana stated. “It is nice to
have my brothers at school. Some may say that they
wouldn’t like that, but it is nice. There is a bond with
friends, teachers and stories that happen throughout the
day. In a way, it is a comfort to have my mom as an alumnus
and my brothers as fellow students of DB.”
Ana’s favorite teacher is Mrs. Marie (McDevitt) Neville.
“She works us hard, but keeps the class interesting with different
projects.” After graduation in 2008, Ana plans on
playing softball in college and studying medicine to
become a doctor.
KURT ERLANGER
“...our active student body helps
carry on the tradition of the school.”
This fall, Kurt Erlanger will
be entering a very important
chapter in his educational
and spiritual life; his senior
year at Bishop DuBourg High
School. There are many emotions
that Kurt will encounter
this school year. He is looking
forward to his senior year;
the Kairos Retreat, Senior
Service Project, classes, playing
sports, prom, graduation and making memories with
friends. “I am very excited about my senior service project.
I am eager to live our school motto, Faith in Christ…Service
to Others as a class. It is wonderful to give back to the community,”
Kurt expressed.
“There is a place for everyone at DB. We have a very active
student body which helps carry on the tradition of the
school,” Kurt stated. Before his senior year started, Kurt participated
in football, track, was a student ambassador and a
tutor. This year, Kurt again plans to continue playing football,
running track, being a Student Ambassador and a tutor. Kurt
was also elected Treasurer of the National Honor Society.
Kurt enjoys classes pertaining to practical economics,
technology and team sports. After graduation, Kurt plans on
going away to college to study sports medicine, engineering
or computer science. “I am excited about the next step in
my life, but I will miss DB. The many friends, teachers,
coaches and staff members are like my second family,” Kurt
stated. Family is very important to Kurt. His older brother,
Bryan, graduated from DB in 2005 and his younger brother
Marc will be in the class of 2011. Kurt’s fondest memory of
Bishop DuBourg was when the Varsity Football Team won
the Conference Championship in 2004. Kurt and his brother
Bryan shared that Conference Championship as teammates.
“It was amazing to have that moment with my older
brother. Not many people can say they were on a championship
team with their older brother.”

SPOTLIGHT ON…
MARIE NEVILLE
“DB is a family. People support
each other…”
Marie (McDevitt) Neville
is beginning her 30th year at
Bishop DuBourg High
School. Many things have
changed over the years, but
one important item has
stayed the same: family. “DB
is a family. People support
each other during personal
times whether it is a teacher,
student, or staff member. We
love and support one another through the good and difficult
times.”
Seeing many students over her thirty years, Marie
expressed how wonderful they are to each other. “They are
the best kids in the world. They are interested in learning,
they have a sense of humor, they empathize with students
and with events occurring around the world and they truly
want to make a difference in the world. They are down to
earth and they see the importance of family. They understand
that their parents want them to receive the best education
and they are proud of where they go to school.”
Marie has three children, Katie, David and Beth. Katie
graduated from DB in 2003. She is a National Merit
Commended and is in her senior year at Truman
University studying Anthropology and Education. David
graduated from DB in 2005. He is a National Merit Scholar
and is in his sophomore year at the University of Tulsa
studying Petroleum Engineering. Beth is in her sophomore
year at DB. “Katie, David and Beth have been a part of
something so important to me and is now important to
them. They are each different, but have the same fun with
friends. I feel lucky that I see my kids in ways others don’t
have a chance. I see their successes as a parent and as a faculty
member thriving in the classroom.”
“Bishop DuBourg has great students, challenging academics,
and many opportunities for students to find a
place to belong. DB also prepares students to thrive in a
coed community in college and in life.”
faculty
STEVE BETTLACH
“The DB family is helpful, charitable
and wonderful.”
Steve Bettlach is beginning
his 14th year at Bishop
DuBourg High School. One
can always see “Mr. B.” in the
hallways between classes
shaking hands and saying
hello to students and fellow
faculty and staff. “I love to
see the kids in the hall. It
makes my day.”
Mr. B is well known by
younger alumni. “It is wonderful to see the response of our
alumni in returning for Homecoming, Career Day and the
Gala Dinner Auction. Seeing so many DB family members
on campus says something about the school and the people.”
The class of 1995 celebrated their ten year reunion last
fall and left something behind. “I went into my classroom
after the reunion weekend and there were messages all over
my board from members of the class of 1995. That was
really neat. I was touched.”
Mr. B and his wife, Marty, have three children, Steve,
Julie and Brian ’97. “It was great having Brian attend DB. I
saw him make friends and he still has those same friends. It
is nice to see Brian and those friends grow and reach milestones
in their lives. Over the summer, I attended one of
Brian’s friend’s wedding. It was ’good stuff’.” Mr. B and his
wife also have four grandchildren.
“Because Bishop DuBourg High School is a smaller
school, we look to each other and recognize each other. We
take advantage of getting to know everyone and we care
about each other,” Mr. B commented. “We are very accepting
of all types of people and their talents. The DB Family is
helpful, charitable and wonderful.”
CAMPUS

AROUND
CAMPUS
This school year Bishop DuBourg
High School has a new leader for
Faith Formation. Faith Formation is
vital in the growth of an individual’s
spirituality. It is helping to bring faith
and Christ in the faculty and students
through prayer, retreats, the Eucharist
and any faith perspective event. There
are many issues one faces everyday
that pulls us to decide right from
wrong. During that pull, one shouldn’t
forget our moral teachings and our
faith. “My goal is to give students a
critical faculty to discern good from
evil. To give the students a key moral
sense,” Fr. Mike Lydon, Vice President
for Faith Formation stated.
Fr. Lydon works with Campus
Ministry with prayer days, retreats
and liturgies. Some other responsibilities
of the Vice President for Faith
Formation are; keep an active prayer
list of the sick, dying and special
needs, visit the sick in home or hospi-
In the latest of upgrades around campus,
Bishop DuBourg launched a new
website. The website was designed to
be user friendly for parents, alumni,
prospective families, students, faculty,
and staff. It even allows a quick peek at
the halls of Bishop DuBourg High
School during a normal day.
Expanding the previous website, new features include a
daily updated news ticker of important immediate details,
a schedule of upcoming athletic events, a more in-depth
overview of the school’s history, expanded information on
the school’s Catholic Identity and Co-Curricula’s, and the
opportunity to make a charitable gift to the school.
DB grads will find the “Alumni” section to be a helpful
tool in keeping up with the news of fellow classmates as
well as the entire Bishop DuBourg community. Alumni
tals, assist with the evaluation of
Religion Teachers and Curriculum,
serve as a resource for the administration,
faculty and staff in matters of
catholic doctrine, build relationships
with neighboring pastors and
parishes that send children to Bishop
DuBourg High School and weekly
masses for the students, parents and
faculty and staff.
Bishop DuBourg High School has a
strong faith identity with our motto
“Faith in Christ…Service to Others.” It
is now time to grow that faith and
identity everywhere in the community.
“The ultimate goal for Bishop
DuBourg High School is to see the faculty
on fire with the mission, prayer in
the classroom, seeing the importance
of Christ in every academic setting
and in everyday life and the students
would feel touched by Jesus spiritually
and emotionally in a positive
experience while attending DB,” Fr.
Lydon expressed.
Fr. Lydon is excited to be back at
Bishop DuBourg High School in this
role. He was a Religion Teacher at
Bishop DuBourg from 1987-1995. He
recently was the Pastor at St. Pius V
Parish from 1995-2006.
At the Opening School Mass, August 29, a new chalice,
donated to Bishop DuBourg High School, was blessed at and
used for the Liturgy. Barb Finan, wife of former coach and
teacher, Tom Finan (1956-65, coach and teacher; 1990s,
coach), gave the chalice to Bishop DuBourg in memory of her
late husband. Engraved on the bottom of the chalice is their marriage
date, Sept. 8, 1956. Barb previously donated funds to renovate our fourth
floor chapel in memory of Tom Finan as well. Thank you to Barb and the
Finan family for remembering Tom through these precious gifts which
enhance our worship at Bishop DuBourg High School.
Bishop DuBourg Launches New Website
can check for updated class
reunion information, as well as
read up on where their classmates
are in the “Class Notes” page.
Parents accessing the site will
find information regarding the
Parents’ Organization, volunteer
opportunities, upcoming events, &
more. Links to the online grade book and the homework
hotline are easily accessible for all current families. In addition,
prospective students and families are welcomed and
guided through the admissions process, while getting some
input from current students.
As DB continues to be on the move, stay current with all
that is happening through our website at
Interior Renovations
Completed
Since the summer of 2003, Bishop DuBourg High School
has been involved in an on-going interior renovation project
each summer. In the summer of 2003 construction on
the new Athletic Stadium and Theatre renovations began
with much attention following the Capital Campaign lead
by then Principal Tom Jokerst. As the facelift to the Athletic
Complex was going on, the entire interior began its own
facelift.
Beginning in the summer of 2003, and in the subsequent
summers, the interior of the building was being completely
painted, hallways were retiled, blackboards were replaced
with white boards, classrooms were carpeted, and the entire
school received new full length lockers for the students. In
addition to the physical upgrades, the campus received
major upgrades in technology; including taking the entire
campus wireless. In total, the interior renovations and
repairs came in just over $1 million.
This past summer, the last of the scheduled interior renovations
to some classrooms and a stretch of hallway was
completed. While future summers will always lend themselves
to major renovations and projects, it is nice to finally
finish the last of the classrooms and hallways. “Anyone
who has been back to visit notes how the old campus looks
like a brand new campus; and of course there is always the
same expression, ’why didn’t this happen when I was here’”
said Angela Calloni ’98, Director of Alumni Relations.
If you’re in the neighborhood please stop by and check
out how the new campus looks and feels.
Parents’ Association Giving
a Fresh Look to Front
Landscaping
The Parents’ Association has recently invested much time,
energy, and resources towards the front landscaping of the
campus. Mike Daues ’77 has led the project over the past
year to include new shrubs along the sidewalks, a new concrete
walkway on the front circle, and a new brick and stone
sign for the front of the building. In addition to all of this,
in collaboration with a grant from the Archdiocese and the
Parents’ Association, additional lighting is being added to
the front walk way and the front of the building.
Mike, married to Denise (Korte) ’78 and father of Dave
to Mary (Taylor) ’74 and father of John ’06 and Joe ’07;
and Terry Noble, married to Lisa and father of Tom ’06 on
the front landscaping project. The “Wednesday Night
Crew” has been active in updating various parts of the
campus over the past three years.
The Parents’ Association has been very active in school
events and projects. The group meets monthly and for the
past three years has been very active in manning the concessions
stand for the outdoor games, raising funds for
school projects, leading the Gala Dinner Auction, and helping
to foster great communications between parents and
the school. The total cost on the project when finished will
likely reach near $50,000. Funds for the project have been
raised through the Parents’ Association, an Archdiocesan
Grant, in-kind donations from parents and alumni, and a
lot of sweat equity.
The 21st Annual Cavalcade Gala Dinner Auction
Golf Tournament … Another Successful Year
The Bishop DuBourg Golf
Tournament has been a staple for
alumni, parents, and friends of
Bishop DuBourg High School for the
past fourteen years. The 14th Annual
Golf Tournament was a great success
generating nearly $20,000 for the
Athletic Programs at the school.
The tournament was enhanced
again this year to include additional
food and drinks on the course. Mary
(Schutte) ’77 and her husband Mike
Leeper generously donated Dairy
Queen Dilly Bars on the course. Other
great treats included Candy Bars,
Margaritas, and Grilled Hot Dogs.
More than the extras, the tournament
proved to provide great golf on a beautiful
May Sunday afternoon. The
Gala Reaches
New Heights
Bishop DuBourg’s Annual
Gala Dinner Auction, “I’ll be
Home for Christmas,” is the
school’s largest special event. The 21st annual Gala was
held on November 18, 2006 and was the most successful
auction in school history. The Gala broke $100,000
in revenues for the first time since the auction was separated
from the raffle. More than the revenues, attendance
was up over 33% from the previous two galas.
The Gala included a Preview Night, held the Friday
evening before. Guests and volunteers were treated to
cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as they perused the auction
items and previewed their purchases. The Preview
Night was added in the fall of 2005.
Gala festivities began with mass in the Bishop
DuBourg Chapel. After mass guests moved into main
Saracino Family; John ’75, Bart ’76,
Linda ’76, Mike ’78, and Chris provided
lunch and dinner compliments of their
fine family of Bartolino’s Restaurant.
The Golf Tournament benefits the
Bishop DuBourg High School Athletic
Department. The student athletes
from school donned their jerseys and
hit the course to work the Golf
Tournament to show their appreciation
for everyone’s generosity. The
event was attended by alumni, parents,
teachers, coaches, and friends.
A very special thanks goes to the
Honorary Chairman: Mr. Phil Pisani
’58. Other alumni and key contributors
to the success of the tournament
by serving on the Golf Tournament
Committee include: Matt Blaskiewicz
lobby and the gym to begin bidding on the silent auction.
Guests were entertained by the Bishop DuBourg
Jazz Band & Chamber Singers. A terrific dinner was
served by student volunteers, while wine was passed by
parent volunteers. At the conclusion of dinner, the live
auction began.
Live auction items included a baseball & jersey
autographed by David Eckstein; tickets to March
Madness; a 50” Plasma; a week-long stay at a condo in
Park City, Utah; a Yorkshire terrier puppy, and the
night’s highest selling item: a Chocolate Lab puppy.
The Gala was chaired by Joann (Kitson) McClure ’85
and Mary Connelly, mother of a current sophomore.
Both ladies are also the parent of alumni. The Gala
committee consisted of over twenty-five parents,
numerous alums, and friends of the school. Mark your
calendar and plan on attending next year’s Gala Dinner
Auction the Saturday before Thanksgiving, November
17, 2007. For continued information check out the
website at www.bishopdubourg.org.
The … Tournament was a
great success generating nearly
2006 Proves Fruitful for Cavalier Athletics
Lady Cavaliers Soccer
Only one year removed from a 2nd
place finish in the State
Championship for the Lady Cavaliers
Soccer program, this past spring
proved to be fruitful again for Bishop
DuBourg athletes and teams. The
Lady Cavs captured their second
straight district title with a 9-0 route of
Bayless followed by a 3-2 double overtime
win over a very talented Affton
team. Sophomore Ana Hibbler scored
two goals while senior captain, Katie
Donnelly added the third. The ladies
advanced to the quarter finals of the
state playoffs before being knocked
off 1-0 by Rosati-Kain. Freshman
Goal Keeper Beth Neville showed
great maturity in the Lady Cavaliers
District Championship run. Coach
Kent Hediger felt the ladies showed
great determination. “Having to
replace a lot of key senior leadership
from the state team a year ago, I
thought we really progressed quickly,
and the results reflect a lot of hard
work from the team.”
Track & Field
Track hurdler Melissa Weber made
her second consecutive appearance
in the state championship track meet
held in Jefferson City. Melissa is a 110
High Hurdler and a 300 Intermediate
Hurdler. Weber is also a very accomplished
cross-country runner.
Melissa entered her Junior season
with high expectations and goals. She
had hoped to place in the state meet,
but came up short. It will remain her
goal this off season as she will prepare
for her third consecutive run to the
state championship track meet.
Coach Steve Radomski also sent to
the state track meet his fine men’s relay
team. Seniors Jomonique Simmons,
Reggie Nelson, and Nick Stemmler
joined freshmen Tayswen Sando and
Luke Hibbeler (alternate) to compete
in the State Championship track meet
in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
The team had much momentum
heading into the final weekend of the
track year after having won both
events in the All Catholic Track Meet.
Nelson suffered an injury during the
4x100, and alternate Luke Hibbeler
was called on to fill in the 4x200, the
team’s best event. Unfortunately the
relay team fell short of placing in either
event, and will need to add two additional
speedsters if it hopes to make
another run next season.
Dan Abernathy
Junior Dan Abernathy was rewarded
for his outstanding efforts on the
baseball diamond by being named
Second Team All State for Class 3.
Abernathy was awarded the honor as
a utility player. The All State selection
came on the heels of a First Team All
District and First Team All Conference
Selection. Abernathy was a pitcher
and an outfielder for the Cavaliers,
and played in his third season on the
varsity squad as a junior. Abernathy
had to undergo Tommy John surgery
this summer, and will likely not pitch
in his senior season for the Cavaliers.
Coach Joe Groaning ’83 thinks
Abernathy is an asset anywhere on
the field. “Dan is really good pitcher,
but even if he can’t pitch next season,
his bat and his hustle are enough to
still make him one of the best players
in the area.”
Cross Country
Finishing first in the AAA Conference,
the boys’ Cross Country Team had an
exciting season. In addition to placing
first at the Border States Invitational
meet at Southern Illinois University at
Edwardsville, junior Josh Wallace was
the varsity Conference Champion and
sophomore Jimmy Koester was the
junior varsity champ. Juniors Jake
Garanzini, Jordan Wheeler, Jeff
Morrow, and Wallace all qualified for
the State Championship meet.
Wallace placed 38th, Garanzini at
73rd, and Wheeler at 111th.
Unfortunately, Morrow was unable to
compete due to a death in his family.
Coach Steve Radomski was very
pleased with the determination and
hard work of the team, stating, “We
were very proud of the accomplishments
of both our varsity and JV
teams this season.”
Athletic Director Kevin Regan was
pleased with the success of the 2006
athletic teams and is equally excited
about what lies ahead in 2007. “The
number of student athletes out this
past year leads me to believe that we
will be very competitive in all sports
this year. Bishop DuBourg High
School has a long reputation for excellence
in athletics, and this year should
be no different.”
HIP HIP HOORAY!!
The Bishop DuBourg High School
Cheerleaders participated in the
Ancient Order of Hibernians St.
Patrick’s Day Parade in Dogtown on
March 17, 2006. It was a great day to
show the Cavalier school spirit to
thousands at the parade. In between
walking and throwing beads to the
crowd, the cheerleaders performed
many of their cheers. A few weeks
after the parade, Mrs. Mary (Mense)
Aubuchon ’75 was notified that the
Bishop DuBourg Cheerleaders
received the Grand Marshal Award for
their performance during the parade.
An award ceremony was held at the
Brentwood Legion Hall to present the
cheerleaders with this honor.
Cheerleaders Tricia Ederle, Susie Hark
JEANNIE (FLYNN) LEAVITT ’85
SPOTLIGHT ON…
“It was really nice having my
sister with me at school.”
Jeannie (Flynn) Leavitt graduated
from Bishop DuBourg High
School in 1985. She remembered
some of her favorite teachers from
her days at DB. “Fr. Suit for Religion,
Mr. Murray for Government, Mr.
Jobst for English and Mrs. Elliott for
Calculus were some of my memorable
teachers.” Jeannie and her
younger sister, Mary Jo (Flynn) Thierry ’86 went to school
together. “It was really nice having my sister with me at
school. We would discuss certain teachers and homework
assignments. I liked how we shared experiences. I was
preparing myself for Engineering, where Mary Jo was
preparing herself for Sports. Even though we were going into
different subject areas, we appreciated our Catholic education
and how Bishop DuBourg prepared us for college.”
After graduating from DB, Jeannie earned her Bachelor
of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from
University of Texas-Austin. She then went to Stanford to
earn her Master of Science degree in Aeronautics and
Astronautics. After graduating from Stanford, Jeannie went
into the Air Force. She went to F-15E Striking Goal training
in Arizona and received her flight time in North Carolina,
Idaho and Las Vegas. While in Las Vegas, Jeannie attended
USAF Fighter Weapons School at Nellis AFB, equivalent to
a Top Gun. In 1998, she would return to USAF Fighter
Weapons School to be an instructor for six months. She
also received her MBA from Auburn. Jeannie is the first
female fighter pilot in the Air Force.
Jeannie has been deployed to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait,
Turkey and South Korea. Her deployments were usually 3 to
4 months. In 2003 Jeannie married her husband Craig
Leavitt. While stationed Seoul South Korea, Jeannie and
her husband, welcomed the birth of their first child, a
daughter, Shannon Teresa.
Jeannie is currently a Lt. Col in the United States Air
Force and is stationed at Shaw Air Force Base in South
Carolina. Shannon, Craig and Jeannie will welcome a new
addition to their family in October, a baby boy.
RICH RIESENBECK ’62
“We established long term
family ties.”
Rich Riesenbeck graduated from
Bishop DuBourg High School in
1962. While attending DB, Rich was
involved in soccer and his parish,
Epiphany. Coach Finan and Fr.
Morris were some of Rich’s memorable
teachers. “Coach Finan was a
very nice person.” Rich’s brother
and two sisters also attended DB.
Bill graduated in 1967, the late Denise Riesenbeck graduated
in 1972 and Debbie (Riesenbeck) Hanak graduated in
1968. “It was great having my siblings and I attend the same
school. We had a lot in common with teachers and friends.
We established long term family ties. Bishop DuBourg High
School provides a quality education. You meet a diverse
group of people that prepares you for life.”
After graduating from DB, Rich attend Southeast
Missouri State to earn his degree in Marketing
Management. He then went on to work for Anheuser Busch
for eighteen years. “During my eighteen years with AB, I
worked in many Marketing areas.” In 1981, Rich bought
McDowell Distributing and changed the name to Golden
Eagle Distributing, a distributor of Anheuser Busch. Over
the years, Rich has bought many distributing companies in
Hannibal, Kirksville and Iowa and merged them with
Golden Eagle. Rich oversees the distributing companies.
With his business leading him to Hannibal, MO, his
brother and sisters remained in St. Louis. Bill ’67 has been
a very successful business man in his own right, focusing in
on investments as a profession. Debbie ’68 had two sons
Scott and Tim that attended Bishop DuBourg High School
in the mid 90s. Rich’s family has always been very tight,
even more so during the long battle with cancer that Denise
’72 forged during the 90s.
Rich has three children, Karen,
Michael and Chrissy. All three are
accomplished in both family and business.
It’s especially neat for Rich to have
his daughter Chrissy overseeing the Iowa
location of Gold Eagle Distributing.

staged and choreographed the production.
“When we undertook this
of the challenges ahead. This cast and
crew have been the closest tight knit
group of any I have directed. The crew
has dedicated themselves to the perfection
of tech work. I personally
thank each and every cast and crew
member that put up with my vision of
this show; the first Guild member to
be entrusted to direct. I humbly
bestow the honor and the honor was
Goes Hollywood
Bishop DuBourg is hitting the big
screen! In early October, a film crew
affiliated with Warner Brothers began
shooting the family film Alice on campus.
The movie is about an adolescent
girl named Alice who is trying to
deal with the perils of middle school.
The movie is based on the Alice book
series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and
broaches many topics, such as families,
friendships, and understanding.
Alice stars Alyson Stoner, who played
Sarah Baker in the recent “Cheaper by
the Dozen” movies, as well as Penny
Marshall, Luke Perry, and Ashley
Drane. Drane, the wife of World Series
MVP David Eckstein, had the Cardinal
Shortstop on campus for four days
after the championship run. Alice is
set to be released later in 2007.
Career Day
Each year, Career Day is held during
junior week. Alumni return to Bishop
DuBourg to speak to juniors about
their area of expertise. This past year,
nineteen alumni spoke to the class of
2007. The students listened and asked
questions. Many students commented
on how enjoyable it was to
hear stories about the alumni’s DB
experiences. “It was great to get a
glimpse into areas that interest me. I
am not sure what I want to be, but listening
to different areas gave me new
perspectives. Plus, it is neat to hear
stories from the alumni,” Bobby
