News for the families of Bishop DuBourg High School
February—March 2012
Whole Kids Outreach
Jordan Quinlan, Senior Students Jordan Quinlan, Easlyn Molitor, Sara Hasty,
DB President Kirk Boschert, and WKO friends
Ellington, Mo.: January 2-6 and January 9-13
For the third year in a row, seniors from Bishop DuBourg traveled to Ellington, Mo. in the southeastern
portion of the state, near Popular Bluff. Nine seniors participated: Libby Elking, James
Haessig, Sara Hasty, Jake Hogan, Sarah Hudson, Easlyn Molitor, Natalie Osmack, Shaun
Peters, Jordan Quinlan. Several adults also chaperoned the project: Kirk Boschert, Ron
Elking, Melissa Hoffman, Dave Peters and Fr. Mike Lydon.
Whole Kids Outreach (WKO) is a faith-based nonprofit organization that reaches out to young
mothers, often single, who are pregnant or have young children. Often poor, these young mothers
need formation and education on how to be mothers. WKO also works on some home repair
and yard projects for residents in the area to build good will. WKO owns over 100 acres, including
twelve horses who need care. Sometimes referred to as “Missouri’s Appalachia,” WKO ministers
to five rural counties around Ellington.
Sr. Anne Francioni and her staff helped our students to care for the WKO grounds, find projects
and make visits to young mothers and their families. Some home repair projects included roof
repair, posthole digging, raking leaves, among others things. Feeding, grooming and watering
the horses, mucking the stalls, and other activities were tasks that needed to be done daily.
The students also shopped for groceries, cooked the main evening meal, and cleaned up afterwards.
A nightly spiritual reflection was also part of the schedule, helping the students to see
Christ in the work they did and the people they met. Their community life together was an integral
part of their experience. Being in a rural and poor culture was also fodder for reflection. On
the last night, a bonfire in the amply wooded area on WKO grounds was lit so that the students
could roast marshmallows and tell stories. Greg Clark of the WKO staff was our leader that night
and he also supplied some false scares in the woods!
Jordan Quinlan delivered a reflection at the Pro-Life Mass on Thursday, January 20, back at
Bishop DuBourg, along with three other students – Robbie Mard, Michelle Stein and Ryan
Bahr – who worked at different sites. Jordan reflected upon her WKO experience, citing several
people and activities that helped her see Christ in others and to appreciate afresh her life at home
in St. Louis
Dear DB Family,
As we enter a
new calendar
year, it is time to
start planning for
next school year.
The course selection process for
the 2012‐13 school year should
be completed on February 2rd.
Counselors will speak with any
student who did not accurately
complete the course selection
process. The administration will
also contact any student who has
not paid the fee. Once the course
selection process is completed
and the $200 fee is paid, students
will receive a Course Selection
Report in advisory on February
21st. Students must return a
signed copy of the report by
Monday, February 27th.
After the course requests have
been entered, the number of sec‐
tions, the teacher assignments,
and the schedule for next school
year is determined. Schedule
conflicts can occur because
From the Principal
courses may be offered only during
one period. When a schedule con‐
flict occurs, alternate courses will be
substituted into the student’s sched‐
ule.
In the rare occurrence that a student
should need to make a schedule
change, there is a $25 fee for the
schedule change. Changes should
only be made for academic reasons.
Not all requests for schedule
changes will be honored. If the
course change is teacher initiated,
the $25 fee will be waived.
It is very important for both stu‐
dents and parents to understand the
registration process and the courses
that are offered. If at any time you
have questions, please do not hesi‐
tate to contact the guidance counsel‐
ors, learning consultants or dean of
students. The DB faculty and staff
are available to answer questions to
ensure that the students have the
best courses not just for next year,
but for their remaining years at DB.
Easter Monday we will again host
our Cavalier For A Day. Last year
we had over 150 fifth through sev‐
enth grade students participate in
this day‐long event that provides an
in depth look at what it’s like to be a
Cavalier. We are hope for a great
turnout again this year. For more
information, contact Mr. Ryan
Sykora at 314.783.4419.
A special congratulations to all of
the students who made the Honor
Roll for their hard work and aca‐
demic achievements last fall.
The DB community is proud of our
seniors for their hard work on their
service projects. Listening to their
many stories has been inspiring. So
many of them have changed as a
person, changed their views about
other people, and changed their
whole outlook on life. Our goal is
for them to continue this service
throughout their lives.
In Service to Christ,
Adopt‐A‐Family
Religion classes at Bishop DuB‐
ourg joined forces with groups
of faculty who volunteered to
make Christmas happen for 15
families in need from St. Vin‐
cent DePaul Parish in St. Louis.
These families were given to
Campus Ministry by Sr. Jackie
Toebbin of St. Vincent’s. She
said that these families were in
need due to poverty often times
caused by family members who
are incarcerated. Sr. Jackie told
us that these familes often fall
through the cracks of social ser‐
vices who could possibly pro‐
vide funds for them and their
children. These families are of‐
ten times single parents or
grandparents trying to raise the
children.
Fifteen religion classes, as well
as faculty members formed
teams, collected money,
shopped, and wrapped the gifts
for their adopted families. Each
family was provided new cloth‐
ing items and toys for the chil‐
dren. “This was a wonderful
experience— seeing faculty
teams and students and their
religion teachers pour out their
love for others in need. It cre‐
ated the real meaning of Christ‐
mas spirit for the Bishop DuB‐
ourg Community.”
The 12 families that were
helped included over 60 people,
both adults and children. Cam‐
pus Ministers Mrs. Leibrecht
DB Connection
Faith & Service
and Mr. Driscoll, along with a
few of the religion classes
loaded three vans full of gifts
which were delivered to Sr.
Jackie on December 21, 2011.
Thank you for your continued
participation and generosity!
Pro‐Life Club
The Pro‐Life Club is back from the annual trek to Wash‐
ington, D.C. and all had a great time. This year, the club
went on a bus trip with the Office of Youth Ministry—
The Way, The Truth, The Life. They travelled to march
in protest of the Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade,
the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). In front of the Lin‐
coln Memorial, pictured above, our students, along with
St. Justin Youth Group, met up with DB alum Jeannie
Flynn Leavitt ’85. A great time was had, and many can’t
wait to go back and march next year!
Swing Dancers
The Swing Dancers were part of the Compton Heights
Band’s Christmas show at Powell Symphony Hall. The
dancers did two shows with the band. The swing danc‐
ers also provided the entertainment for the annual St.
Louis Hills Neighborhood Association Dinner. The
Swing Dancers will take their annual trip to Tan‐Tar‐A
Horn (Fontbonne University) and Rob Gutzler,
(former Ritter baseball coach and player for Har‐
ris Stowe on thier NAIA National Championship
team in the 80s), helped teach over 65 athletes
ranging from first through seventh grade! The
Sunday workshops focused on hitting, pitching,
fielding, batting, and catching! Just goes to show
that there is ALWAYS something new and excit‐
ing going on at DB!
Second semester is in full swing and Progress Report
Night is right around the corner. Hopefully, everyone
is in the study mode and doing well. Students should
be using Academic Hour to ask teachers for extra help.
Academic Hour was created so students can get any
and all extra help they may need or want to ensure
success. We also have Homework Club on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays after school.
Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors with credit make‐
up needs will be receiving information about DB Tuto‐
rial later in the spring. DB Tutorial for underclassmen
will be available in the summer only.
Seniors should be wrapping up their college search
and making decisions soon. Financial Aid forms
(FAFSA) should be completed as soon as possible.
Juniors have finished their college planning meetings
with their counselors. Parents, please ask them about
their meetings and the information discussed. College
planning takes a lot of time and research. The internet
is a great source of information. Helpful links can be
found under the Guidance link at
www.bishopdubourg.org
Sophomores and Freshmen received their PLAN and
EXPLORE results in class and they discussed career
options and choices. It was fun to hear them com‐
menting about skills/abilities needed and salary
ranges. Ask your sons or daughters what they learned
about themselves, college readiness and their testing
skills. ACT provides tons of information on these
score reports. Check out www.act.org for some spe‐
cific information for students and parents about both
the PLAN and the EXPLORE tests.
ACT Dates and Registration
The next ACT is April 14th. The registration deadline
is March 10th. After that, the next test date is June 9
with a registration deadline of May 5th. Juniors
should plan on taking this test in April and/ or in June.
College Rep Visits
College Representatives are again visiting the guid‐
ance office this spring to finalize plans with seniors
and to give juniors a start on their college planning.
Please encourage your son or daughter to visit with
college reps of interest.
Summer Enrichment
Summer Enrichment college programs are available.
These opportunities are announced and many will be
posted on Message Center. You may also contact your
son or daughter’s Guidance Counselor for more infor‐
mation.
We encourage parents to discuss your son or daugh‐
ter’s progress this quarter. We can’t stress how impor‐
tant it is to stay on track and keep up with classwork
and homework. You can get up‐to‐date grade and
assignment information online. Call the main office if
you forgot your codes/ passwords. If you have con‐
cerns about your son or daughter’s progress, please
contact his or her guidance counselor.
In addition, encourage your son or daughter to look
beyond the here and now. The more planning that
goes into their future, the brighter it looks. Talk with
them about their goals and post‐high school plans.
Feel free to contact his or her guidance counselor for
more information.
