Convocation<br />

This symbolic opening <strong>of</strong> the academic year includes an address<br />

by both President Gutmann and Provost Price which signifies the<br />

formal induction <strong>of</strong> the Class <strong>of</strong> 2016 into the Penn community.<br />

Faculty and staff, in full academic regalia, will be present, as will<br />

flag bearers for each <strong>of</strong> the College Houses. Convocation marks<br />

your entrance into the <strong>University</strong>’s academic community and<br />

serves as a bookend to Commencement, when you will once again<br />

assemble as a class.<br />

Experience Run! Super-Athletes <strong>of</strong> the Sierra Madre, an<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mexico, who are long considered to be the world’s<br />

greatest long-distance runners. Competing on mountainous<br />

terrain in daylong races stretching up to 100 miles, the<br />

Tarahumara people have maintained the strength, stamina,<br />

and isolation that has ensured their survival through the<br />

Join Ya’lla, the premiere Middle Eastern Dance and Drum<br />

troupe at Penn, as they put on an enchanting belly dancing<br />

The Penn Reading Project, sponsored<br />

through a single text. This year’s text<br />

is John Patrick Shanley’s play Doubt:<br />

A Parable, published in 2004, which<br />

raises provocative questions about faith,<br />

Penn Reading Project<br />

All freshmen will attend a presentation featuring the author and staged readings<br />

<strong>of</strong> scenes. In the afternoon, you’ll be assigned to small groups. In the first<br />

30 minutes, you’ll write a brief essay on an assigned topic related to Doubt.<br />

Blue books and pens will be provided; the essay will not be graded. A faculty<br />

member will then lead a discussion about your essay responses.<br />

With the kick <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> PRP 2012, the Office <strong>of</strong> New Student Orientation and<br />

Academic Initiatives will launch the Year <strong>of</strong> Pro<strong>of</strong>, featuring programs and<br />
