NEWSLETTER
13 August 2012 (Week 1 Secondary Timetable)
As I missed writing last week’s due to illness, I
didn’t have an opportunity to thank everyone
who joined us for the fabulous Education Day
Celebration. After an excellent Ecumenical Service
conducted by Reverends Beth and Robert
Bowman, featuring our Scripture classes, a very
special Assembly took place which acknowledged
those students, teachers and community
members who made major contributions to our
school over the past year. Special congratulations
to Sharon Milsom, Donna Lane and Effie
Fergusson who received extra special acknowledgement
from the staff at Dunedoo Central
School. The scrumptious morning tea and
“lunch on the lawn” contributed to making the
day even more special, by bringing families together
with teachers and students. Congratulations
to our Education Day Commiittee.
Thankyou for your great organisation and the
contribution you have made towards raining
awareness of what schools do in the 21st Century.
Year 11 were very excited this morning as they
departed for their annual pilgrimage to Mt
Selwyn. The Year 11 Ski Trip is a very important
component for team bonding as students get to
know each other on a more personal basis whilst
enjoying the challenge of attempting a new
sport. Most of our students have never seen
snow let alone skis so it’s quite an adventure
with everyone starting at the same level.
We had an exceptional Olympics Day last
Thursday, despite the weather, which was very
reminiscent of London. There were many positive
comments from students and staff were
very happy with the attitude of students towards
the activities. Besides a range of interesting
sports, students learnt about other countries and
their athletes, the importance of events like the
Olympics for promoting world peace and friendship
and sportsmanship in general.
Commiserations to our u/16 Dunedoo/Coolah
Rugby League players who were beaten by the
slenderest of margins by St Anne’s Temora (22-
24) , in the Grand Final of the Small School’s
Rugby League Knockout at Bathurst last week.
The game was in the balance right up to the final
whistle, and was a credit to both sides who gave
their all. Congratulations to St Anne’s on their
win and congratulations to our boys for being
contenders.
We are at present moving a great deal of accumulated
pre-loved equipment to the Hall in
preparation for our ‘Trash & Treasure “ Day on
the 26th August. Besides the sale of school
items there will be a Car Boot Sale to allow
community members to sell their preloved items
on the day. WE know there are many events
taking place on that weekend, but hope that everyone
can spare a half hour or so to view items
and make a bid or a purchase.
Kindergarten stole the show at last week’s Friday
Assembly, with another rendition of “the
Red Red Robbin comes bob bob bobbin along”.
It is always a happy assembly when Kindy “run
the show”, and fantastic to see so many parents
and family members join us.
I attended a Reference Group Meeting on the
new Australian Curriculum last week. At this
stage, there will be a great deal of preparation in
2013 for implementation in 2014. Teachers will
be supported through a range of staff development
programs. English will be brought into
the Primary School in 2014 followed by maths in
2015. In the Secondary School, English, Maths,
Science and History look like being introduced
in 2014, followed by other courses in the following
years.
Good luck to Year 12 Industrial Technology
students who had to submit their practical project
to day for examination by the external markers.
Good luck also to Year 12 who begin their
Trial HSC Exams today.
This week there is a Merit Assembly today, visits
by our Speech Therapist on Tuesday, students
participating in Moorambilla Choir go to camp,
the Australian Ballet visits Thursday with some
Workshops and the Premier’s Youth Advisory
group who will be interviewing our SRC and
other school leaders. Twenty Four students will
be representing our school at the District Athletics
Carnival in Dubbo on Friday. Good luck to
all students involved in activities this week.
Enjoy your week!
On Friday at lunchtime, our illustrious team of Claire Moorhouse, Joshua Rookyard, Codi Page and
Kyle Lewis played their first online games. We had only played one game against St. Mary’s Wellington
but had managed to make it to the fourth round because two other teams had forfeited. We met
Dubbo Christian School at www.chesshere.com for virtual chess. Everyone was ready with no idea
what our opponents looked like or how to size them up. It was all about the game. Claire, Codi and Joshua were all defeated
and Kyle theoretically won because his opponent timed out. We have finished up in the Country NSW Junior Chess tournament
for this year but will continue training for the next chess event in Dubbo in September.
State Touch Football Carnival
Last week I went to Parkes to play touch football as part of the
Western Region Primary Girls team. The state touch football carnival
was held over 3 days with teams competing from every region in
NSW. We played 12 games in two and a half days with the semis
and finals being played on Thursday
afternoon. The Western team was
made up of girls from Orange, Parkes,
Lithgow, Forbes, Kandos, Rylstone,
Gilgandra and of course Dunedoo. We
were very competitive over the tournament,
improving with each game, and
finished 9th overall. I really enjoyed the
experience, learnt new skills, made
some new friends and scored 2 tries!
Emma Gallagher
Chaplains Chat with Rev. Beth
What do I do? My task is to supply pastoral, spiritual, emotional and social support and comfort to all
members of the Dunedoo Central School community regardless of faith or belief systems.
Chaplaincy is a bit like sitting at the crossroads of life where the different lines of life experience clash with
one another. There are 3 models of caring involved in chaplaincy:
Pastoral care aims to provide physical & emotional support rather than a purely spiritual focus;
Mentoring or walking alongside another – a bit like Gandalf and Frodo; and,
Enabling is being there to assist and support members of the school community (Student, Staff,
Family& Friends) to be who they are to their fullest potential.
I am not the School Counsellor, (though I do share his office) and am not here to “Christianise” the School.
My role is supporting the whole body of Dunedoo Central School as an added resource with a different skill
set and approach to a professionally trained teacher. The position is funded by the Federal Government’s
School Chaplaincy and Welfare Programme and is for the period 2012-14. For the rest of 2012, I’ll be at the
school and its functions for 20 hours a week, then my hours will revert to 10 hours a week (400 hours per
annum) next year. I’ll be undertaking Personal and Professional Development and Training as part of my
support role in the school.
Dunedoo- Coolah Under 16 Rugby League almost Snag a Country Title.
After a great run to make the Country finals the Dunedoo - Coolah boys travelled to Bathurst’s Carrington
Park last Wednesday to face St Anne’s of Temora in the final to determine the Country’s best. Quietly confident
with their own form, the boys also knew they would face a good challenge from a mainly unknown opponent.
And challenged they were!
Temora came out absolutely on fire and made a few big inroads into the Dunedoo- Coolah defensive line early,
but the defence led by awesome displays by Hamish Kitchin, Sam ( Rambo) Foran, and Sam Christensen
held, and both sides showed great skill and control in the early stages. The fast pace of the match began to tell
and in the 16 th minute Temora staged a well structured raid and found the line for a converted try to lead 6 nil.
Almost immediately Nathan Brown struck back with a magnificent 80 metre try, Tim Trainor converted and
the teams were on level pegging.
The boys worked themselves back into Temora’s half and after a kick Harley Stevenson stole the ball and we
attacked again with Jake Besgrove showing great agility and strength crashing over the line, Tim was on target
again and Dunedoo- Coolah had a 12 – 6 lead five out from halftime.
The restart was part of a horror few minutes as we gifted Temora a quick try and then with some speedy play
from their backs they were over again to take a 12 – 16 half time lead.
At halftime the boys were confident that they could still take the match and set about the second half with a
lot of energy. A couple of nervous errors gave Temora another good opportunity and another try and looking
down an eight point deficit was a genuine challenge for the boys. They rallied and for the most part dominated
the next 25 minutes of play.
With halfback Tim Trainor and five eighth Jake Besgrove calling the shots our big forwards Anthony Kaperonis,
Sam Christensen, and Jacob Pottbury were driven on by inspired leadership from skipper Hamish
Kitchin and lifted the tempo. A scrum feed on the Temora 20 saw Nathan Brown again breach the line and
dive over next to the posts. Scoreline 18-22, and well on top!
A lucky scrambled try from a kick on one of their few visits to our half saw Temora extend their lead to 18-26
with about 12 minutes to go. In this period everyone really lifted and with Anthony Kaperonis leading raid after
raid we were unlucky not to be awarded two additional tries, before Nathan Brown capped off a great day
with his third try off a very clever Tim Trainor kick to get us to 24 – 26 with 5 minutes left on the clock. Again
we were denied two more good shots, and with Blake Carlyle disallowed another try with two minutes to go
we were extremely unlucky not to get the points needed to claim the Country Championship Title. A case of
the better team losing in the eyes of many observers.
This was an excellent game, one the Dunedoo- Coolah boys were extremely unlucky to lose, and a credit to the
whole team. Anthony Kaperonis was named the “man of the match”, being just one of many great efforts in
the team. This dose not usually happen, the losing side winning most valuable player.
Other considerable efforts were young gun Brenden Solberg, being only in year 8 showed great determination
and fighting spirit, and another great effort from Luke ( HOGS) Hogden, and James Copelin were what kept
us in the match.
Well done to all the players, and thank you to the coaches, managers and
all the parent and family supporters who were at the game.
WISHING YOU ALL A GREAT DAY!
I have some exciting news ‐ we are trialing some new prod‐ 17/8 Nola 24/8 Nola
ucts. Some of which are “Green” canteen approved varie‐
ties are Spaghetti Bolognese, Macaroni Cheese and Beef Lasagne. The same company also has
Pizza Slabs which are slightly bigger than a pizza single. Please see below to read about the new
products on trial and a brief explanation of “Green, Amber and Red” categories. These items will
be placed on next terms menu based on popularity on sales. So if they don’t sell they won’t be
added. I am looking forward to feedback regarding these products.
A shame some of my volunteers have been sick themselves or sick children, so I hope everyone
gets well soon. Thankyou to Jenni Yeo and Nola for your help last week. Thanks Jenny
LOOK!
We have some new products on trial:
Macaroni Cheese 200g serve $2.90
Spaghetti Bolognese 200g serve $2.90
Beef Lasagne 200g serve $2.90
All of the above are GREEN approved meals.
Pizza Slabs 160g serve $2.70
These pizza slabs come in: Hawaiian, Margherita, Supreme & BBQ Meat Lovers
The Pizza Slabs are AMBER approved.
What does GREEN and AMBER mean?
GREEN means we can have as much as we want, it has to dominate the menu
such as fruit and vegies, salads, sandwiches and rolls, low fat dairy products, water
etc.
AMBER means we can have these in moderation and should not dominate the
menu such as low fat or lite pies, sausage rolls etc. They are also in smaller portion
sizes such as the “snack size” 28g packet of chips. Certain ice creams come
into this category as does full fat dairy products and fruit juices.
RED means we cannot sell these items at our canteen on a daily basis, we can only
sell these items on one day of the term, which is our disco. These items are
“sometimes” foods such as lollies, chocolate, most ice creams, fizzy drinks such as
coca cola, fanta, biscuits, cakes and so on.
Any questions please ask me and I will be happy to assist.
