What do campers do at Camp Terrapin?
Specific activities vary daily and weekly. Camp counselors
lead each group (determined by age of camper) through all of
their activities.
The different activity periods include:
• Indoor sports
• Outdoor sports
• Swimming
• Visual arts
• Performing arts
• Computers
• Science
• Music
• Games
SPORTS. Tampa Preparatory School has two full-sized
indoor, air-conditioned courts, two outdoor half courts, a soccer
field and a baseball field. Camp Terrapin utilizes all of these
state-of-the-art athletic venues. The “indoor sports” activity
may consist of one or more different games, depending on the
interest and age/skill level of our campers. These games are
led by our camp counselors and include (but are not limited to)
kickball, dodgeball, matball, capture the flag, basketball, tag,
hot potato, duck-duck-goose, mother-may-I, foursquare and
others! “Outdoor sports” may include (but are not limited to)
court hockey, tennis, baseball, soccer, kickball, field games,
flag football and more! Campers should wear closed-toe
shoes (sneakers) every day.
SWIMMING. Tampa Preparatory School has an eightlane
competitive-size swimming pool that can be heated in
the winter and cooled in the summer to keep the temperature
constant. The “swimming” activity period is a free-swim and
dive period. Campers must pass a swim test on the first day
of camp. If a camper does not pass this test, then they will be
asked to either wear a life jacket or be restricted to a certain
area of the pool. Certified lifeguards are on duty at all times.
Campers should bring their bathing suit, towel and sunscreen
every day.
VISUAL ARTS. The “art” activity period provides campers
with a directed study of different art media. Art instructors
create a different theme for each camp session. The theme
based art lessons allow artists of all levels to have fun with
drawing, painting, printmaking, clay and various 3-D materials.
Afterwards, campers may take their projects home.
PERFORMING ARTS. The Smith Black Box Theater
at Tampa Preparatory School is a high-tech theater that was
designed after the University of South Florida’s Black Box. The
“theater” activity period is led by a theater instructor or theater
major. This space provides a creative venue for campers
to learn about theater while performing different exercises,
puppet shows, improvisations, music, dance, skits and more!
COMPUTERS AND GAMES. The computer labs
at Tampa Preparatory School have upgraded Macintosh
computers with a variety of educational, non-violent games
installed on them each summer just for camp. In addition,
campers have access to “kid-friendly” websites for game play.
The Internet is heavily filtered at Tampa Prep and monitored
while the campers are on the computers. Campers may also
choose to play board games, card games, ping-pong or air
hockey during this activity.
SCIENCE. Jump into learning and adventure during our
exciting hands-on science activity time. Innovative and
interactive, our campers will have the opportunity to become
involved in the engaging world of science. Different themes will
lead them through a summer filled with exploration.
SPECIAL NON-DAILY ACTIVITIES. These include
theme days, special guests, dance, field and swim events,
movie and popcorn days and more!
OPTIONS. Counselors may offer campers an option of two
different activities, but for the majority of the time, campers will
stay with their group and participate in the planned activity.
Campers may also be grouped by gender, in addition to age,
during specific activities. The master activity schedule may
vary based on weather or other special activities.
LUNCH. Campers may bring or purchase lunch. Camp
Terrapin will offer “kid-friendly” meals. The lunch schedule will
be finalized in May 2012 and the order form will be sent in
your information packets. All lunch forms must be turned in
before the start of camp!
SNACK. All campers receive an afternoon snack break
during which they may eat a snack brought from home. Snacks
and beverages will also be available for purchase during this
time.
BEFORE AND AFTER CARE. Before and After Care
is offered for the convenience of our parents who need to drop
their campers off before 9:00 a.m. or pick them up after 3:30
p.m. This is a free play time for campers. Before and After Care
take place in the gymnasium. See registration form to register
for this service. Before Care begins at 8:00 a.m. and After Care
ends promptly at 5:00 p.m.
AFTER CAMP SWIM. Campers will be able to stay for
an extra swim period. This is a non-structured swim and dive
time. After Camp Swim runs from 3:30-5:00 p.m. daily. See
registration form to register for this service.
PARENTS NIGHT OUT Enjoy an evening out (or in!)
while we take care of the kids, Camp Terrapin-style. Kids will
