Tanning: Is it really worth the risk?
By Kelsey Kitchens
Staff Writer
Summer of 2010 has unfortunately
come to an end. Summer
is a season full of long days in the
sun, whether it is at the pool or on
the beach. Before one steps out
into the sun, or decides to go to the
tanning bed, they do not realize
the risk they are taking. Explosion
of the body to UV rays can have a
deathly effect in the long run.
In the United States, more
than one million people a year
are diagnosed with skin cancer.
Ultraviolet rays from the sun, or
from a tanning bed can scramble
DNA and cause skin cancer. There
are hundreds of types of skin
cancer that can be caused by the
sun, or by tanning beds. The most
dangerous of them all is called
melanoma. Melanoma is a type of
cancer that begins in melanocytes.
If melanoma is not treated in early
stages, it has the chance to spread
to internal organs. Once the cancer
has reached internal organs, it is
in most cases fatal. So far in the
year of 2010, an estimated 68,130
people have died in the United
States from melanoma.
TOMS
These shoes are not only
the “hip” stylish shoes to wear, but
also have an amazing story behind
them. With every pair you buy, TOMS
will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need.
REDBOX
Problem finding great new
movies at a reasonable price? The big
red box outside of stores has all you need for the low price of
ONE DOLLAR.
PEOPLE BREAKING THEIR LEGS
Every direction you look,
there is someone with some sort of leg brace or cast.
It’s starting to seem like you need a cast to
complete an outfit.
80’s SWEATERS
The vintage look
is coming back, but nothing compares
to the rising popularity of 80s
sweaters. Just in time for the cold
season up ahead.
THE RACE FOR THE PENNANT
is possibly the most heated it’s been in a number of years.
With the battle in the AL between the Yankees and Rays, and
in the NL with the Giants and Braves, the baseball community
is in for quite an exciting October.
Opinion
Tanning beds are seen
as less harmful to the skin than
exposure to the sun. The truth is:
tanning beds are much more severe
than the natural UV rays that come
from the sun. When using a tanning
bed before the age of 35, the
risk of getting melanoma is increased
by 75%.
The tanning bed industry
is worth over $5 billion. About
thirty million Americans visit a
tanning salon every year, spending
approximately $7 at each visit.
Sun Tan City is the industry leader
in sun tanning and sunless tanning
services. They have over one
hundred sunless tanning salons
within eight states with an inviting
motto of “Let yourself shine.” With
a motto like that, who can really
resist? But think about modern
day knowledge of other guilty
pleasures that were before to be
known as acceptable. For example,
the tobacco industry. As recent as
the 1950s, highly known figures
such as news anchors, actresses,
and even presidents were publicly
seen smoking tobacco. Now that
the harmful effects of tobacco are
known, smoking tobacco is seen
as a health hazard, and a habit that
should be done away with.
A healthy glow is nice to
have, but should be achieved in a
responsible away. The effects of
obsessively laying out in the sun,
or going to tanning salons can
cause deadly skin cancer. So is it
really worth the risk?
SIZZLES and FIZZLES
“THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID” JOKES
Nothing seems to be more annoying then to hear one of these
jokes that were funny about……….. 5 years ago.
TWILIGHT SERIES
Is the talk of the school, but fades away after a period of time.
Then comes back alive once the movie is released in theaters.
Who cares about Edward Cullen or Jacob Black anymore? What
about Team Carlisle?
OVER-USE OF 3D MOVIES
3D movies were once considered a great way to invest 4 extra
dollars in. But now seems a waste of money because,
EVERYTHING IS IN 3D! Also, many people experience
nausea from having to sit through the intense special effects.
SOCKS WITH FLIP FLOPS
Flip flops are for bare feet and socks are for shoes. My dad
wears sandals with socks, and he does it because he is in his
mid 40s. Enough said…
SILLY BANDS
Was a great invention taking a simple rubber band, and
transforming it to cool shape. Are they so cool anymore?
Considering we maybe sharing the same trend with elementary
kids…
UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE FOOTBALL
has been on quite the unfortunate down cline this season. With a
narrow win against the University of Alabama Birmingham, and
an embarrassing loss to the LSU Tigers, the Vols look to be in for
a long season.
