Heart Attack: 

Know the Signs 

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart 

is blocked – usually by a blood clot. If this clot cuts off the 

blood flow completely, the part of the heart muscle supplied 

by that artery begins to die. 

Your heart is your body’s most important muscle. When 

it’s in trouble, every second counts. Knowing the signs of a 

heart attack can help you or a loved one get help as soon as 

it’s needed. 

According to the American Heart Association, typical signs 

of a heart attack include: 

• Chest discomfort – Most times this occurs in the center 

of the chest and lasts more than a few minutes, or goes 

away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable 

pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. 

• Discomfort in other areas of the upper body – This can 

include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the 

back, neck, jaw, or stomach. 

• Shortness of breath – This may be, but isn’t always, 

accompanied by chest discomfort. 

• Breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. 

If you think you or someone you know may be having a 

heart attack, call 911 as soon as possible and chew on a 

325-mg aspirin tablet to prevent further blood clotting.

Questions to Ask 

Preparing for surgery can be a scary time of unknowns. 

When it comes to learning more about your options, you 

may not even know where to start. The first step is finding a 

surgeon whose guidance and care you trust. Then, talk openly 

about your treatment and concerns. 

Here are some possible questions: 

What options are available? Options may include open 

surgery, laparoscopic surgery, da Vinci robotic surgery, or, in 

some cases, nonsurgical options. Learning about the risks and 

benefits of all options will help determine which is best 

for you. 

What is your experience? Look for a surgeon who has 

experience with the surgical procedure you are going to have. 

What kind of outcomes have they seen? 

What can I expect pre- and post-surgery? What kind of 

anesthesia is required for the procedure? How long will the 

procedure take? What is the recovery process and does it vary 

by surgical option (open, laparoscopic or robotic)? What are 

the risks of my particular surgery? 

Is the surgery covered by my insurance? Talk with your 

insurance provider and make sure you communicate with your 

surgeon about your insurance provider and coverage. This may 

alter your surgeon’s recommendation so that you get the most 

cost-effective medical treatment.

Orthopaedic Surgery: What’s It Like? 

Fear of the unknown and potential pain may even cause individuals to delay needed 

orthopaedic surgery or refuse it altogether. But when joint pain interferes with 

daily activities, surgery may be the key to regaining a healthy and active life. When 

surgery is recommended, knowing what to expect can ease anxiety and build the 

foundation for a positive experience. 

It’s important to know that there are many treatment options – both surgical 

and nonsurgical – for knee, hip and joint pain. Before surgery, your orthopaedic 

healthcare team will discuss with you the benefits and risks of the type of surgery 

that has been recommended for you. They will explain what to expect before, 

during and after surgery and provide tools to help you prepare for your surgery and 

recovery at home. 

After your surgery, a team of nurses and physical therapists will help you start 

moving again. Most patients are able to walk or move with support after one day. 

You’ll also begin your physical therapy in the hospital. During your recovery – both 

in and out of the hospital – your physical therapist will help you with exercises to 

strengthen your body and prevent future injury.

Is Sleep Leaving You Breathless? 

A good night’s sleep makes all the difference in the way you perform

perform at your peak. Unfortunately, people with obstructive sleep apnea may 

not get a good night’s sleep. What’s worse, they may not realize it. 

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) means “being without breath.” It occurs when 

the upper airway repeatedly “closes” during sleep, sometimes hundreds of times 

nightly, causing the sleeper to gasp for breath. Many conditions contribute to 

OSA, such as being over 40, being overweight, having high blood pressure, and 

having a larger neck circumference.

The only way OSA can be detected is by a sleep study, like those performed at 

select ProMedica hospitals. OSA is associated with an increased risk of heart 

attacks and stroke. It also contributes to everyday accidents and car crashes. 

Thankfully, sleep apnea is treatable. Most often treatment involves a continuous 

positive airway pressure machine – called a CPAP machine.

and support.
