Annual Conference in Atlanta Meets,
Exceeds Expectations of Sonographers,
Educators, Students, Vendors
By Beth W. Orenstein
Arielle Szabo, RDMS, of Wellsville, N.Y., had
two reasons for attending the SDMS Annual
Conference at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta
earlier this month – both of which she easily
satisfied.
Szabo, who works as a sonographer at a small
hospital near her home, will be taking her
credentialing exam in echocardiography in a few
weeks. “I thought some of the sessions in the
Cardiac Track would be good review,” she said.
She could have taken courses online, she said.
“But I’m more of an ‘in-person’ person, I need to
hear it and see it.”
Szabo also wanted to see the latest ultrasound
equipment. The only one who does
echocardiography at her hospital, Szabo thought it
would be helpful to bring some information back
to her administrators who are looking to update
their department’s ultrasound equipment.
SDMS Exhibit Hall
She found all she needed at the Exhibit Hall,
which featured a wide variety of vendors with
the most up-to-date trends, products and
services in sonography.
Szabo is just one of 1,046 who attended this
year’s SDMS Annual Conference and found it
was not only good for their careers but also their
minds and their clinical responsibilities.
The sonographers, educators and students who
attended were not only able to listen and learn
from luminaries in their fields, they also earned CME
credits, saw old friends and made new ones. And then
there was the fun – at the annual SDMS and SDMS
Foundation Awards Dinner at the Oceans Ballroom in
the Georgia Aquarium and at the House of Rock Party
at Atlanta’s famous Tabernacle.
SDMS House of Rock Party at the Tabernacle
What a blast to see your ordinarily staid coworkers,
who came dressed as their favorite music icons,
dancing up a storm. Lady Gaga was in the house as
was Sonny and Cher – and who was that Michael
Jackson?
Keynote speaker Ron White
White was followed by
Cindy Rapp, BS, RDMS,
RDCS, FSDMS, FAUIM, of
Denver, who gave the
McLaughlin Memorial
Lecture on professionalism.
She stressed the need for
sonographers to behave
like professionals so that
they will be treated like the
professionals they are.
Friday morning, attendees
learned how to improve
their memories from
Ron White, the nation’s
number one memory
expert. His tips included
forming a picture in your
patient’s names and
eating brain foods such as
blueberries.
Cindy Rapp, BS, RDMS, RDCS,
FSDMS, FAUIM
Conference-goers also heard Phillip Bendick, PhD,
RVT, FSDMS, talk about the potential for bioeffects
SDMS News Wave September 2011 2
from sonograms. While
no adverse effects have
been reported in humans,
Bendick said, researchers
using diagnostic medical
equipment have found
measurable effects in
laboratory animals. That’s
why, he said, sonographers
need to understand
Phillip Bendick, PhD, RVT, FSDMS
bioeffects and how to
minimize their potential. “You don’t want to be the first
sonographer to report bioeffects,” he said.
Chance to Network
Like Szabo, many of those who attended the four-day
conference said it met their expectations and more.
Ted Whitten, BA, RDMS, RVT, an advanced practice
sonographer in Manchester, NH, and newly installed
member of the SDMS Board of Directors, really
enjoyed the opportunity to network. “That’s equally as
important to me as learning,” Whitten said.
He was able to meet up in person with some
sonographers whom he had been communicating
with via email.
Marlene Arnold, BS, RDMS, and Janice Glasper, RDMS,
RVT, educators for the College of Southern Nevada in
Las Vegas, came anxious to hear about the latest in
general and cardiac sonography. “We just wanted to
hear what’s out there and make sure that our students
are getting what they need,” Arnold said.
Glasper was happy that representatives from American
Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS),
Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) and
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
were on hand so that she was sure she was presenting
her students all their credentialing options and,

personally, to hear about the upcoming requirements
regarding recertification from ARDMS.
Kathleen Holland, RT, RDMS, RVT, of Lake View, NY,
who works as a sonographer for a vascular surgeon,
acknowledged that her main goal in attending was
to earn her CME credits. But the annual conference
always provides more, she said. “You’re learning from
the best,” she said. “That’s how I feel.”
Live Scanning a Bonus
A popular feature this year was live scanning, and
Shari Marsh, RDMS, RDCS, RVT, of Nashville, TN, who
works for a mobile company, thought the addition
was terrific. “It’s really helpful to watch and see where
they put the transducer on the patient when they’re
scanning,” she said.
This was the first year, too, that attendees were able
to sign up for a Registry Review – the course held on
Thursday provided a broad overview of the topics
those preparing for the registry exams need to know.
The topics that were presented were aligned with
major outline topics in the SDMS series of National
Certification Examination Review (NCER) books. It was
a big hit with those who attended.
“It was really informative,” said Megan Blackwood
of Midwest City, OK, who graduates in May from
the Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center. “It
helped me better understand some of the harder
concepts we learned about in class.”
Her classmates, Kendall McMurrian of Kiefer, OK,
and Lacey Lantz of Oklahoma City, who took the
physics and instrumentation review, agreed nothing
they heard was totally new to them, but they found
it helpful hearing the information from different
instructors.
SDMS News Wave September 2011 3
“Our teachers are great but it was just good to get
another person’s spin on it,” McMurrian said.
Also, she said, seeing that she knew most of the
material was a confidence-booster. “I think I feel
pretty confident after my classes and that review,” said
McMurrian, who wants to work in echocardiography
when she graduates.
Review Encouraging to Test Takers
Lori Labriola of Reeders, PA, who graduated from the
sonography program at Northampton Community
College in Bethlehem, PA, in August, is taking her
abdomen credentialing exam next month.
She was excited about the registry review because,
she said, “even though I’m a recent graduate, there are
still pathologies that aren’t in the front of my head. It
was good to be reminded about things that may be
on the test.”
The new Registry Review tutorial
Also, she said, she welcomed the opportunity to ask
any questions participants wanted and found the
answer the instructors gave to her inquiry about a rare
gall bladder condition very informative.
In another student group, Kelsey Davis of Norman,
OK, also felt more confident after the Registry Review
sessions she attended. She’s planning on sitting for
the physics exam in December and said, “I feel now I’m
ready to take it and get it done.”
Erica Lehr of South Lyon, MI, who will graduate from
her sonography program at Grand Valley State in
April, finds the annual conference to be very student
friendly and hopes to come back when she’s working
in the field.
Shannon Singer, RDCS, of Grove, OK, who works as a
sonographer in a physician’s office, finds “everyone
to be real friendly” and likes learning about new
products and techniques from colleagues.

Singer was personally interested in more information
on appropriate use criteria and was given resources
where she might find what she’s looking for.
The Atlanta conference was the second that Tracie
Runyon, RDMS, of South Point, Ohio, had attended.
“The first time I came, I came as a student,” she said.
“Now I’m an educator so I’ve been on both sides.”
Runyon was impressed with the quality of the sessions
she attended – especially the Ob/Gyn and Vascular.
“They were very informative,” she said. “I’m going to
bring some of the information I gathered back to my
students.”
Laura McIntyre, RDMS, who came with colleagues
from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, said that most of what
she heard was review. But that was good, she said,
“because after a while you start to go on auto pilot
and so it’s nice to be reminded why we do things the
way we do.”
Also, she said, it’s always reaffirming to hear that the
educators in Canada face the same challenges that
those in the United States do.
Vendors Happy Too
Vendors also welcomed the opportunity to meet with
sonographers who are in the trenches.
Molly Ciliberti, RN, is marketing manager of Hokanson
of Bellevue, WA. Long-time exhibitors, Hokanson was
promoting its equipment that makes a difference
SDMS News Wave September 2011 4
in the lives of vascular sonographers who perform
venous reflux testing, she said.
Those who stopped by their booth and learned about
Hokanson’s rapid cuff inflator “were going to go back
and tell their doctors how great it is,” Ciliberti said.
As the events ended on Sunday, many left hoping to
attend next year’s annual conference Sept. 20-23 at
Washington State Convention and Trade Center in
Seattle and see how SDMS can possibly top this year’s
– somehow it always does, they said.
Beth W. Orenstein is a writer for SDMS.
Awards Dinner attendees enjoyed fantastic views of sharks, beluga whales, rays and fish at the Georgia Aquarium.

Among the 1,046 attendees at the 2011 SDMS annual
conference in Atlanta was Saidi Kayiranga, one of two
sonographers in all of Rwanda.
Kayiranga attended courtesy of the SDMS Foundation
and the efforts of Leif Penrose, BA, RDMS, RVT, RDCS,
RT (R)(CT), of Rome, GA.
Penrose, director of ultrasound programs at Georgia
Northwestern Technical College in Rome, had met
Kayiranga in 2008 while fulfilling a lifelong dream to
work overseas.
Kayiranga worked as a radiographer and CT
technologist at King Faisil Hospital, Kigali, Rwanda,
where Penrose had gone in May and June of that year
to teach sonography.
“Saidi had a very strong interest in learning to do
sonography,” Penrose recalls. What little sonography
was done in Rwanda was done by physicians and was
limited exams.
Kayiranga and Penrose quickly became friends.
Rwanda has no sonographers and no programs to
learn sonography. Because it was too expensive and
almost impossible with all the red tape to bring an
African to America to study sonography, Penrose
helped Kayiranga enroll in a sonography program
associated with Thomas Jefferson University in
Philadelphia in neighboring Uganda – The Ernest
Cook Ultra Sound Research and Education Institute
(ECUREI).
“Saidi was sponsored by me and my wife, our school in
Georgia, and our students,” Penrose said.
For a good part of his two-year training, Kayiranga
would work a 40-hour weekend shift at King Faisil
and then board a bus for a 10-hour ride to ECUREI in
Kampala. He’d reverse his steps after class on Fridays
so he was home in time to go to work at the hospital.
For the last six months of his training, he was able
to stay in Kampala - courtesy of Penrose and his
supporters.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in sonography,
Kayiranga returned to Kigali, where he worked at King
2011 SDMS Annual Conference Brings SDMS
Member Saidi Kayiranga All the Way From Rwanda
Saidi Kayiranga and Leif Penrose, BA, RDMS, RVT, RDCS, RT (R)(CT)
Faisal performing abdominal, vascular, small parts and
ob/gyn sonograms.
Rwanda has but two cardiologists and no one who
does echocardiography. The cardiologists wanted to
know if Kayiranga could learn.
Unable to find a school that taught echocardiography
on the African continent, Kayiranga was able to
come to America in August and study at Georgia
Northwestern. “Because the credits he earned don’t
transfer and because of other immigration issues, he
can’t be a regular full-time student so he’s a guest
student auditing didactic classes at our college and
attending clinical courses,” Penrose said.
Kayiranga takes echocardiography classes on Mondays
with seniors and on Tuesdays and Thursdays with
juniors; Wednesdays he does clinicals at Floyd Medical
Center in Rome and on Fridays at Memorial Hospital in
Chattanooga, Tenn. Kayiranga lives with the Penroses
and commutes with Penrose – who travels 65 miles to
work in Rome and 35 miles to Chattanooga.
“Saidi is here until December and hopefully will be
able to take his ARDMS boards before he leaves,”
Penrose says.
The SDMS Foundation provided an Annual Conference
scholarship, SDMS membership, and National

Certification Exam Review (NCER) support so that
Kayiranga could attend the SDMS Annual Conference
with Penrose, a regular attendee. Kayiranga, 35, who
is soft-spoken said everyone has been so nice and
welcoming and he appreciates all that the SDMS
Foundation and the sonography community has done
for him.
He was overwhelmed by all he saw in the Exhibit Hall
and heard in the different tutorials, he said.
Kayiranga has been on a whirlwind since meeting
Penrose, but is excited to be able to learn sonography
and soon to go back to his country and start doing
echocardiography. “When I return, I will be the first
cardiac sonographer in a country of almost 12 million
people,” he said.
Kayiranga said Rwanda, where the average life
expectancy is 56.8 years, has a growing need for echo
cardiographers who can do screening and diagnostic
exams. While Rwanda has only two cardiologists, Team
Heart, a team of cardiologists, echocardiographers and
nurses from Boston, visit regularly to assist them in
open heart surgery operations three times a year.
When asked to comment on his appointment as
the next Editor for the JDMS Dr. Bendick said; “I look
forward to being able to serve the SDMS membership
as the journal’s Editor. The JDMS is one of the world’s
premier journals for sonographers and we hope
to capitalize on the advancements in 21st century
medical imaging for the benefit of our association
members and the patients we serve. Medical imaging
modalities are no longer stand-alone technologies,
ultrasound will continue to be integrated with
technology advances to create more timely and
accurate diagnosis that will ultimately lead to better
patient management. I hope to continue the excellent
work reflected in the journal and insure that we
remain a cutting edge source of knowledge and
information for sonographers throughout the world.”
Dr. Bendick further offered his view on the need to
support SDMS members with Continuing Medical
Education (CME); “My objective is for the JDMS to
be the primary CME resource for SDMS members
throughout their career. We will be the source for
state-of-the-art ultrasound clinical updates and
applications.”

SDMS Fellow
Spotlight
Terrence Tye, MS, RDMS,
RDCS, FSDMS
Current Position: Contract
sonographer for Northern
Inyo Hospital in Bishop, CA
Awarded fellow status:
2008
What inspired you to make
a career of sonography?
I entered the profession through the back door. I
had wanted to attend medical school and that didn’t
work out. After a number of years working for myself
in a small business, I got interested in looking into
sonography. I actually spent a day with a woman at a
children’s hospital who was doing echocardiography.
At that time, about the only scanning they were doing
was M-mode. At the end of the day, I remember a
doctor bringing in this newborn who was blue and
asking this woman, whose name was Rose, if she
could tell him what was wrong with the newborn’s
heart. She did this very brief M-mode scan and told
the doctor that the child had a tetralogy of fallot, a
congenital heart defect. The doctor said, “If that’s what
you’re telling me is wrong, that’s good enough for me,”
and took the newborn to surgery. I thought that was
pretty impressive.
After spending the day with her, I started making
phone calls, and one of the first calls I made was to
the SDMS office. They gave me information about
some educational programs. I already had a bachelor’s
and masters at that time. They put me in contact with
Andrea Skelly at Seattle University. I went to Seattle
and visited her. I got into the program there and
got my second bachelor’s degree. I did my clinical
internships at the University of Washington with Dale
Cyr. Then I went to Stanford and did my internship in
echocardiography where I worked with Dr. Richard
Popp. When I finished my internship at Stanford, I
was employed there. I spent 10 years working there
with Dr. Popp. Then I moved onto the Palo Alto
Medical Foundation, where I spent the next 15 years.
A year ago July, I left Palo Alto to move to where I am
This is a continuing series of interviews of
our distinguished SDMS Fellow members.
now, a small town out in the California mountains.
I have developed a business here doing contract
echocardiograms for a small hospital, and now I’m
working part-time.
Did you have a memorable role model/teacher?
Who was it?
Andrea Skelly was a wonderful role model for me while
I was a student at Seattle University. Dale Cyr was my
clinical instructor while I was doing my OB internship
at the University of Washington and was very
inspirational. Dr. Popp at Stanford, medical director
of the echo lab, taught me everything there was to
know about echocardiography. I think of Joan Baker
and her husband, Don, as very inspirational people.
Her husband taught one of my courses at Seattle U.
I have a lot of admiration for Don Haydon, the SDMS
CEO, and what he has done and is doing at SDMS.
And all the others I’ve met along the way. There have
been so many people who contributed personally to
my career, including all the people I met while serving
on the boards of the ARDMS and SDMS. They’re all
role models. For about 10 years now, I served on the
Government Relations Committee for SDMS – from
2006-2008 as chair – and I believe the members of this
committee do really important things and the people
on the committee deserve recognition.
What was the most significant advance in
technology that you directly experienced?
That’s a tough question because so much has
happened in echocardiography in the last 26 years.
But probably the single most significant advance that
I witnessed as a greenhorn in the business was the
researching and then the widespread use of spectral
Doppler and then after that came color Doppler. And
then there were big movements forward with the
miniaturization of transducers. Most recently, some of
the most remarkable advances are what they’re doing
with transducers and beam formation and harmonics
to selectively receive portions of the returning signal.
Were there any memorable developments, cases
or events that changed the way you practice
sonography?

Again, the list is so long. There are literally hundreds
of patients and cases that I saw that shaped the
way I view the profession and my role in it. Some
of the most significant in my personal history and
development as an echocardiographer were my
participation as an item writer, a board member and
the treasurer for ARDMS for 11-plus years and the 20
or more years that I participated in committee work,
liaison work and serving as a board member with
SDMS. What makes those experiences particularly
memorable is that Andrea Skelly nominated me to
be a board member at ARDMS only a year or so after
I entered the profession. I quickly saw that what I was
deriving as a professional came from the hard work
of the people that came before me to try to increase
the acceptance of people doing sonography as
health-care professionals and not just technologists.
I was very impressed by that because these people
dedicated a lot of their time and I decided I was going
to do the same thing, and, so for probably 22 out of
the 26 years I’ve been in echocardiography, I have
done volunteer work with ARDMS and the SDMS.
What changes do you predict in the immediate
future?
I think it’s pretty well understood that technology is
marching forward and, with the miniaturization of
computers, that’s going to play a big role with what
happens with sonography and the profession. Instead
of pushing around 500 pound machines, some people
are walking around with laptops that have transducers
attached to them and doing ultrasound imaging. One
SDMS News Wave September 2011 11
thing I think will have a huge impact on the profession
is the passage of something like the CARE Bill that
will create a federal mandate for all sonographers to
become credentialed. When that happens, it’s really
going to change the profession because there are
a lot of people who have been in the profession 10,
20, 30 years and never taken the time to become
credentialed. If the bill becomes law and you don’t
have credentials you won’t get hired. No one will
hire you because they won’t be reimbursed for the
work you do. I do believe that will happen in the next
couple years.
What advice would you give to students/ future
sonographers?
My advice to people who want to get into the
profession is to study hard. Work hard. Be determined,
and absolutely dedicate yourself to the idea of
patient care and taking care of each individual patient
that comes before you. I also would encourage all
sonographers to consider volunteering with ARDMS
and SDMS and to get involved and become part of the
professional societies because they’re what move the
profession forward.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
Without any question, my favorite part is and has
always been working with patients. Second on the list
is I have a real passion for teaching new sonographers
the hands-on aspect of sonography. I think that’s why I
was selected to receive the Fellow award.
Iran, Belgium, Mali, and Peru are just a few of the countries
Sonographers
Around the Globe
Dr. Khalid works as a sonographer consultant in a clinic
connected to the pre eminent South City Hospital in
Karachi, Pakistan. Their patients are usually referrals
but include some walk-ins as well. Additionally Dr.
Khalid is on-call for hospital emergency scans round
the clock, 24/7.
The most popular exams she performs are obstetric,
including antenatal scans, nuchal and anomaly scans
for multiple and high risk pregnancies, Doppler scans,
neonatal brain scans, and trans-vaginal scans for
viability, pelvic masses, and follicular monitoring. She
also carries out breast, abdominal, and thyroid scans
and performs ultrasound guided amniocentesis and
amnioreduction as well.
Dr. Khalid studied sonography at King’s College
Hospital in London. She was a doctor who had always
been interested in radiology. When her two young
SDMS News Wave September 2011 15
children came along, she wanted to change things
up a bit and decided on ultrasound, and it was
just the fit! She greatly enjoys being able to “see”
inside the body and what that means diagnostically
for her patients. Her favorite part of her job is the
overwhelming response of a couple seeing their baby
via sonogram for the first time.
When asked about significant advances she has
witnessed in the field of sonography, she responded,
“The digital multi-functions of box zoom, rotatory
zoom, post-processing, high resolution, and
tissue harmonics are amazing.” As for changes
she anticipates in the field of sonography in the
immediate future, she is excited that 4D scanning
may become as fast as live B-mode scanning but with
less cost.
Dr. Khalid joined SDMS in order to obtain CME
credits needed before the end of her triennium but
regrets not doing so earlier. She enjoys the variety of
specialties covered through the CME activities offered
as well as the fact that CME credits are sent directly to
ARDMS via the SDMS CME Tracker.
SDMS wishes to express its sincere thanks to Dr. Khalid
for sharing a bit about her career in Pakistan. It was our
privilege to learn about your experience, Dr. Khalid!
