<strong>SOLASA</strong> <strong>SPORTS</strong><br />

<strong>QUARTERLY</strong> <strong>REPORT</strong> <strong>JULY</strong> <strong>–</strong> <strong>SEPTEMBER</strong> <strong>2012</strong><br />

PROJECT PREPARATION:<br />

Several meeting were conducted with the local leaders who include chiefs, village elders, area<br />

councilors, District Commissioner and Regional Provincial Commissioner. Meetings were also conducted<br />

with SHGs to prepare them for the new partnership between <strong>SOLASA</strong> and COGICHIS (SOLWOGIDI<br />

project) and formation of new groups.<br />

Meeting with the Kapsoya location village elders to sensitize them on SOLWOGIDI/Solasa project and social<br />

mapping exercise during SHGs formation in langas.<br />

COMMUNITY FACILITATORS AND BOOK WRITERS TRAINING:<br />

Seven community facilitators (CFs) were trained in Community Facilitations including Roles and<br />

responsibilities both at SHG level, organization level and the community at large. Both the CFs and 32<br />

book writers were trained in record keeping, roles and responsibilities of book writers and report writing<br />

at SHG level. The leadership at SHG is rotational and comprise of Moderators (chairperson) who rotate<br />

on weekly basis, the book writers who are two in every SHG and stay in office for not more than six<br />

months and the two group representatives who rotate on yearly basis. The training was very important<br />

to prepare the leaders on the SOLWOGIDI project.<br />

SOAP MAKING TRAINING:<br />

Four groups were trained in Soap making stage one: liquid soap and bar soaps and are expected to<br />

continue with more the stage two of the training: Disinfectants, toilet and beauty soap, shampoos and<br />

conditioners in the next quarter. The trainings were very successful and the groups have already<br />

started selling the soaps.<br />

Tumaini <strong>–</strong> SHG Ilula, followed by Ushirika SHG Munyaka and next is Faith SHG of Langas and the soap sample.<br />

PEER EDUCATION TRAINING:


Fifteen girls were trained in peer education as follows; 5 from Langas, 5 from Huruma and 5 from<br />

Munyaka. The topics covered included: Peer education Introduction, Sexual exploitation, trafficking in<br />

Persons, Reproductive Health including HIV/AIDS, Family planning and Drug and substance abuse report<br />

writing. The training took six days and was facilitated by Family Care Medical Centre of Eldoret. The<br />

training was very successful and resulted in a new partnership between SOlWOGIDI (Solasa Sports) and<br />

Family Care medical Centre. They will provide IEC materials to the peer educators and also be a referral<br />

point for for STI/VCT screening, counseling and Family Planning services.<br />

The Peer educators were issued Certificate during graduation and peer educator’s bags and IEC<br />

materials by Family care.<br />

BAKING TRAINING:<br />

One group was trained in baking skills and the areas covered include: bread making, Swiss rolls, all cakes<br />

and decoration, queen cakes, muffins, Biscuits, Samosas and scrisps. The groups started selling ready<br />

breads starting the 2 nd day of training and this has attracted more people and as the days goes by more<br />

and more people ask for more bread, snacks and cakes. The area councilor was also very impressed by<br />

the project the 1 st of its kind in the area and assisted the group to repair the drainage system and<br />

putting a temporary bridge to the bakery for the women.<br />

Plans are underway to launch the bakery officially in the beginning of the next quarter where<br />

stakeholders, local leaders and relevant government officials will be invited. Three more groups will get<br />

the training starting next quarter; the trainings could not be done at once because the same institution<br />

engaged will be doing the same training for 10 days for each group in their respective areas.<br />

ready for baking and finally the ready made breads and queen cakes.<br />

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT TRAINING:


Three groups were trained in Business management as follows: Faith SHG of Langas, Tamaini SHG Ilula<br />

and Ushirika SHG of Munyaka. Four more groups will be trained in the next quarter and three in the last<br />

quarter of the project those who are undertaking a sandal making training which will take two months<br />

complete.<br />

The graduation Ceremony will take place in the next quarter for the 7 groups where stakeholders and<br />

relevant government officials will be invited.<br />

working in groups.<br />

MONTHLY MEETINGS:<br />

a. Meeting with Peer Educators:<br />

One meeting was conducted with the peer educators where we discussed their individual activity<br />

reports two weeks after they completed training.<br />

Topics covered:<br />

� Reproductive health including STI/STD, HIV/AIDS, Family planning methods.<br />

� Teenage pregnancy and abortion<br />

� Sexual exploitation and trafficking in persons.<br />

� Drugs and substance abuse<br />

Issues raised during the activity:<br />

� Is use of Family planning method safe for persons above 40yrs.<br />

� Questions on safe and unsafe abortion<br />

� The community is very suspicious and were sometimes mistaken for Jehova witness preachers<br />

� Issues of tribalism some of the people could not listen to them because they did not belong to<br />

their tribe.<br />

� Youths <strong>–</strong> it was not easy to deal with youths who were either drunk or in peer groups<br />

� Some of the people were expecting payment to be educated


� Lack of IEC material and penal models<br />

� Some of the old people had problems being educated by the youth a challenge that they were<br />

able to overcome eventually.<br />

� Girls having problem with sanitary towels (pads) during their menstrual circle<br />

� Many cases of child sexual exploitation encountered very young girls as young as 13 with a child.<br />

Recommendations by the peer educators:<br />

� Need more Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials<br />

� Would like budges or IDs for Identification purposes<br />

� Penal and virginal models for condom demonstration<br />

� Sanitary towels for young girls from very poor background<br />

Planned for activities where it was agreed that the peer educators will work as a team until October 13<br />

when we shall have a big outreach activity in Langas.<br />

b. Meeting with the Community Facilitators (CFs):<br />

Held a meeting with the six community facilitators representing the 3 sites where the SOLWOGIDI<br />

/Solasa project is being implemented. Discussed SHG progress reports and planned activities.<br />

Challenges faced during implementation of activities and way forward for activities was also discussed.<br />

FOOTBALL ACTIVITIES:<br />

One of the <strong>SOLASA</strong> teams in the Division 1 League Furaha Ladies continued to lead the Eastern Zone by<br />

winning all its matches in the 1 st leg which has just ended . The other teams continued playing<br />

tournaments and friendly matches as scheduled. <strong>SOLASA</strong> was saddened by the sudden death of one of<br />

its players from Western Butere/Mumias an 18 year old Caroline Nambuka who died in an accident in<br />

Nairobi. Our heartfelt condolences goes to her family and her football colleagues in Western and<br />

<strong>SOLASA</strong> as a whole.<br />

SHG FOLLOW UPS:<br />

Follow ups were made to the 18 SHGs and group activities, progress and challenges were discussed.<br />

Groups were also informed of the planned activities and also selection of groups to be trained was<br />

discussed. The criterion used to select the SHGs was performance in all SHG activities where the first 10<br />

groups were selected.<br />

NETWORKING AND COLLABORATION:<br />

� Paid a courtesy call to the Huruma councilor who was very impressed with the work of<br />

SOLWOGIDI and visited the project site where the women are training and promised to repair<br />

the drainage system which was in poor condition and put a temporary bridge.<br />

� Held two meetings with the youth coordinator Family Care medical centre to introduce the<br />

SOLWOGIDI Project and to establish areas of Networking. The centre will facilitate the peer<br />

education training at a fee and provide IEC materials and other medical services free of charge<br />

for the very needy cases.<br />

� Held a meeting with the Director of Agape Hands of Hope an NGO empowering youth in the<br />

community and established areas of Networking.


� Held a meeting with Kenya Football Federation Secretary North Rift Branch on youth activities<br />

and discussed planned football activities in the region and SOLWOGIDI / Solasa activities<br />

including <strong>SOLASA</strong> end of the year tournament.<br />

� Held a meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Community Sports Foundation<br />

(KESOFO) and established areas of networking.
