New and Upcoming Project
Chemistry for Kids/Little Chemists
2010-2011 Coordinator: Christopher Robinson, MD/PhD Student
Chemistry for Kids/Little Chemists provides underprivileged students the opportunity to
experience science in practice but yet in fun and exciting ways. By conducting the science
experiments interactively, the goals for the program is to provide students an opportunity to
explore their interest in science, inspire them to become future scientist and/or doctors, and
demonstrate that science can be enjoyable.
This past academic year, Chemistry for Kids/Little Chemists did not have any events as they
are in the process of contacting schools where they can hold their events.
Science and Medicine Enhance Program (SMEP)
2010-2011 Coordinator: Rolake Alabi, ‘14
The science and Medicine Enhancement Program (SMEP) provides sixth grade students an
opportunity to learn about health and diseases interactively and through a multi-disciplinary
approach. The students are from the Science and Medline Middle School in Canarsie, New
York. They are broken up into three to four students and paired with medical students to
learn about hypertension and the circulatory system in four sessions. During the program,
the students will learn the material through research, clinical skill sessions, reading, writing,
and presentations.
In the 2010-2011 academic year, SMEP was held in March, April, May, and June 2011 and
had accepted 15 students. The June 2011 session was held during the Travelers Summer
Research Fellowship Program’s “Careers in Emergency Medicine” lecture. For next year,
SMEP will have a sixth and seventh grade curriculums. The sixth grade curriculum will
remain the same and the seventh grade curriculum will focus on the digestive system and
high cholesterol. It plans to include an eighth grade curriculum in two years.
