First we were introduced to special engineer
vehicles to understand the capabilities of the
engineer troop. Then we were transported by bus
into the battle field area where battle field
sequences were shown. Tanks, anti mine tanks,
air force, artillery and air born troop showed
impressive pictures in action. Very impressive was
the station camouflage and deceive. It was
impossible for us to differentiate between a real
tank and a false one. Because of the material
being used even professional reconnaissance is
not able to identify vehicles covered by a special
camouflage net.
At 13.30 hours we were transported to the big tent
area for lunch. After lunch brigadier General
Kullak and his brigade commander, Colonel
Dahmen introduced us into more details of the
exercise, before we were transported to the
Donau. Captain Lau used the opportunity to thank
General Kullak and his brigade commander,
Colonel Dahmen for the invitation and the
impressive performance of his troop. As a small
gift both persons were given a NATO School coin,
which they appreciated very much. The engineers
had build up a huge stand seat direct at the river
Donau. Before we approached the river area we
were advised to use the “anti mosquito balm” to
be protected. Later on the ones who ignored the
advise were really suffering.
We saw a tank battalion building a bridge across
the Donau river. Under enemy air force and
artillery fire the tank battalion successfully crossed
the river, supported by helicopter fire. This
performance was a highlight which we all will not
forget that fast. At 18.00 hours the exercise was
finished and we proceeded back to
Oberammergau. We did a “pit stop” in the area of
Murnau at the Museum’s restaurant “Glennleiten”
where we had a beautiful view into the valley and
the sun set with some Bavarian beer.
