Humph raised number of non-financial
members attending trips, not filling out
temporary member forms. These people are
not covered if something goes wrong. President
acknowledged the problem and directed
that this start occurring. Gary highlighted
that the policy was attend one or two
trips as temporary member then they must
join to continue. This includes past members
who have lapsed.

Swanston Streets. Said he’d checked it out
and had good food/beer selection. President
stated he would check it out and decision
would be made by the Committee on next
CM location.

19 November.
President raised the issue of non-members
going on trips – they must fill out the forms
and pay their $10 otherwise they are not covered
for insurance. This will be enforced on
Christmas trip (+$5 for food; kid’s toys must
also be paid for).

immo’s brother Tim and
Dazza headed up around
lunch time on Friday. Matt and
Humph got on the road about
the same time as me and
Simmo; we raised them on the
UHF around Gumbyha Park
and caught up just after Sands
Rd servo. We stopped for a
comfort stop and some potato
cakes at Yarragon, well worth
the effort. Fueled up in Moe
after a short tour of Moe
Heights! Then it was on to Erica
pub for a meal and to wait
for Bear and Dave.
After we all had Dinner we
headed out towards O’Tooles
Flat, to meet up with Tim. We
followed the main rd out and
over the Dam wall at the
Thomson Reservoir, then
down Merringtons Tk. Bear
coaxed Dave into taking a
short cut track down to
Jorgensen Flat, while the rest
of us went around, cautiously
gazing back at the tomb stone
perched on the top of the short
cut track? Dave got down
safely, sometimes on three
wheels and at one stage, just
two! We followed Donnelly
Creek track, dropping into all
the campsites along the way
and calling Tim on the UHF.
Eventually we found them on
the bottom of
Army track at
Store Point Hut.
This was not a bad
hut, a bit dank inside
with bunk
beds and a hot water
system out the
back. Under the
veranda was a
good fire tub with
a chimney and
seats around the
edge. Friday night was pretty
full on as usual and a few sore
heads took a while to come
good in the morning.
After bacon and eggs, we
packed up and took off up
Army track.
Tim pulled
over for Dazza
to feed the
birds along
the way, then
turning off at
Williamson
Spur track.
We headed up
to Mt Useful
via McEvoys
track and
looped
around Green Hills Link Road
to keep us off the main road.
At Mt Useful we found some
light snow on the ground and
the view was a bit limited
through the low clouds. Dazza
was still feeling the effects
from the night before, so Bailey
sang him a few rounds of
“This old Man, He played one”
to perk him up a bit. We
loaded up Tim’s pie warmer
before taking off down the
main rd again, heading for
Black Range track. We went
down Burgoyne Gap track and
stopped for lunch at Macalister
Gorge Scenic Reserve…Still no
Dazza!

After lunch we headed across
the Macalister River and continued
up Burgoyne Gap track,
passing by the spot where
Simmo blew the front diff in his
Hilux a few years back! We
went passed V Steep & Rocky
Track where there is a secret
hut at the bottom. After crossing
the Heyfield Jamieson rd.
we went up Hickey Creek track
passing McMillans Lookout, a
huge rocky outcrop. Stopping
at the intersection of Mt Margaret
track we came across a
group of 4 wheelers from the
P.A.L.S. 4wd Club. Heading
down Mt Margaret track we
enlisted Bear, with his GPS to
help navigate because we went
off the edge of the Rooftops
map. Passing through Ben
Cruachen Scenic Reserve we
turned right onto Cruachen
Road and headed towards Huggets
Crossing. There was 8
fords on this track, no Holdens
or Nissans…….
(cricket,cricket,cricket)…..yep
still no laughs….
Coming into Huggets Crossing
there was an interesting side
track that went along a dry
river bed, we got out for a look
before opting to stick to the
formed track. Huggets is a huge
campsite with an awesome water
hole and a few long drops
scattered about. We picked a
good spot to erect the tarp, using
the recently modified poles,
(now they fit into the back of a
wagon) and hunted some fire
wood. After dinner we sat
around the convivial fire and
had a few drinks.
In the morning we packed up
and headed out towards Heyfield.
Simmo handed the front
spot in the convoy over to Tim
and Dazza, who took us to
Bruntons Bridge. We stopped
after crossing the river and ex-
plored the walking bridge.
Dazza took us down a steep
track that wasn’t marked on the
map that led us to Victoria’s
first Copper mine at Coopers
Creek. We checked out the old
mines here and the Smelter before
doing our last river crossing
for the weekend, then
headed out towards Rawson
and Erica.
Simmo led a great weekend,
good to see some different
members having a go and running
trips.

his unique pub is called
Mungerannie Hotel/
Roadhouse/Camping Ground,
its located about 180 km south
of Birdsville on the Birdsville
Track. Its Proprietors are Phil
and Pam, they are a great couple
and have a very relaxed way
of running the business (well
Phil does anyway). He has long
hair and beard and wears an
akubra all the time and he
never, ever wore shoes for the
whole time we were there (and
never does). We were there for
five nights, due to the massive
rains and flooding that occurred
all around the Eyre Basin
and desert regions of Central
Australia. So he sticks his
feet in a bucket of water each
night before going to bed, at
Pams request.
Phil and Pam shipped in a couple
of their mates to help out
during the week prior and the
week following the Birdsville
Cup. It’s their busiest time of
the year always and they get
their mates to help them out
each year.
The pub has a great outback
charm about it and lots of
memorabilia from passing travellers;
there are photo’s, number
plates, stubby holders locks
of hair, and a great collection of
akubra style hats. Each time
you look around you will see
something different.
There are several $5 notes
pinned to the wall, with names
on them, being an inquisitive
person I asked why they were
there with names on them??
Phil said its like investing your
money, you leave $5 on the
wall and next time you pass
through, it’s a beer waiting for
you….great investment idea
with inflation etc…which
makes perfect sense because
when were there it was $5 .50 a
beer, so those who came
through last year are .50 cents
better off. I forgot to leave my
$5.50 for next time…..bugger!
Pam and Phil area very nice
and hospitable, they go out of
their way to help you out in
anyway, when stuck for a few
days, and will make phone calls
and weather updates etc..
Phil loves a drink and is always
sipping on a drink and rolling a
smoke, Pam seems to run the

show, she tells Phil what to
do, she is also the cook, …
and man o man, she does a
great meal. There is your
usual pub style meal available,
from parma’s, to
steaks, to burgers, to stir
fried beef and noodles. All
meals are well cooked and
the side salad even has tomato(
in joke) and sun
dried tomato, fetta, nice
leaves and good dressing….its
a bit gourmet!
The important stuff…... the
alcohol! There is a wide
variety of beer to chose
from VB, XXXX, Swan,
West End, Coopers, lots of
CUB and Waterhouse
beers, JD, Beam, Bundy,
UDL’s and it’s always at a
nice cold easy drinking
temperature. There are a
few spirits in cans and bottles
of ladies drinks available
also and they have a
dusty top shelf of other
spirits.
The Pub/shop/info centre/
servo opens at 08:00am
and last drinks at 02:00am
unless Phil is in a drinking
mood it stayed open until
04:00am for us one night.
We were lucky to have a
great group stuck with us
for 5 nights, and there
were a few new friendships
made over that time. We
had a cop, a preacher, a
few farmers, a 4wd Video
producer, some nurses, a
dental nurse, a vineyard
owner, a few tradies—a
real good mix of travellers.
One lady pulled out her
guitar for a sing along, it
was a good night at the
Mugerannie Hotel, lots of
photos taken for Phil’s
‘Party Nights’ photo board
Prices:
Beer $5.50 any beer (if Phil
serves you its $5, he cant
be bothered with the
change).
Spirits $7.00 any spirit.
Wine by the glass$5.50.
Wine by the bottle average
$17.50.
Meals average $19.00.
Lunches average $15.00.
Rooms twin per night $65.
Stickers $5.
Fuel at $1.68 per litre.
Ice per bag $5…($7.50 at
Birdsville).
The Mungerannie Hotel is
a top spot to stop for a
quick beer when travelling
the Birdsville track. It’s almost
halfway between
Birdsville and Marree and
a great place to break up
the driving or a good place
to spend 5 nights.
It has a friendly atmos-
phere and is reasonably
priced considering it’s isolated
location.
I would suggest to anyone
travelling past to drop in
for a beer and say gday to
Phil and Pam
