Sigmund Freud: 1899-1900 SIGMUND FREUD CHRONOLOGY The first copies of The Interpretation of Dreams appear, post- dated 1900. Freud spends the summer of 1899 in the farmhouse of Riemerlehen near Berchtesgaden, where he completes the final chapter of The Interpretation of Dreams. This book and the method of interpretation it sets out are to remain for the rest of his life his "royal road to the unconscious". It proved itself to be a part of my self-analysis, my reaction to the death of my father, that is, to the most significant event, the deepest loss in a man's life. After I had recognized this, I felt myself unable to cover the traces of this influence." Sigmund Freud: 1901 SIGMUND FREUD CHRONOLOGY Freud begins the analysis of the eighteen-year-old Dora. The eight-year-old Dora with her brother Otto Bauer The hoped-for recognition of The Interpretation of Dreams by his scientific colleagues fails to materialize, so that he describes his situation as one of "splendid isolation". As an example of the ignorance of the specialists Freud describes in his "Autobiographical Study" the behaviour of a Viennese colleague who publishes a very negative criticism of the book without ever having read it. "He had been advised, the critic later explained, not to read the book, the Viennese doctors having supposedly informed him that 'it was not worth the effort'." Freud publishes The Psychopathology of Everyday Life in which he demonstrates his thesis of the determinism of mental events through a series of examples of failed speech and actions, which reveal their hidden meaning. The title and motto he chooses for this work show that psychoanalysis is no longer bound to pathology alone: "Now is the air so full of ghosts, that no one knows how to escape them." At the request of a publisher he condenses the most essential conclusions of The Interpretation of Dreams in a popular booklet On Dreams.
