Freud studies under Claus and Bruecke.
In 1876 Freud works in the Institute of Comparative Anatomy and
receives a research scholarship to work at the Laboratory for
Marine Zoology in Trieste. There he studies the sexual organs of
eels and produced his first publication on this subject but is not
happy about the inconclusive results.
The drawing of Freud's study at the zoological station in Trieste,
which he sent to Eduard Silberstein in 1876.
After his return from Trieste he begins work as assistant in the
Physiological Institute directed by the eminent scientist Ernst
Bruecke. Here he says, "I found rest and satisfaction -- and men,
too, whom I could respect and take as my models." One of these
models is an older colleague and future friend Ernst von Fleischl, a
physiologist who played an important role in the beginning of
Freud's scientific career.
Prof. Ernst von Fleischl-Marxow (1846-1891)
