GUTHRIE
FROM PAGE 4
Through the years I
have amassed a large collection
of Woody’s songs.
It is amazing after 75
years, the songs he wrote
in the 1930s and 1940s
describe the current situation
today in the United
States with the economic
and immigration issues.
Woody Guthrie’s songs
and life had a strong infl uence
on me in my college
years and continue to do
so today. So Happy Birthday
Woody; it’s been good
to know you.
Garden Club announces
three presenters
BROOKFIELD - A special program about
*”Theme Gardens”* will be presented at the
next meeting of the Brookfi eld Garden Club
to be held on Sunday, July 22. There will be
three presenters, who will each discuss a different
garden theme. Susan Selby will share
her ideas on designing a “ Mary” garden, using
plants containing “Mary in the fl ower name”.
Dawn Pettinelli will present her knowledge
for creating a “White” garden, containing only
plants with “white fl owers”. Nancy Gline will
give her expertise on making a “Fragrance”
garden, based on the fragrances of the plants.
The program is free and open to the public
and will be held at 3 p.m. at the Brookfi eld
Congregational Church. This will be an enjoyable
program for all.
Selby is currently an archives assistant at
the College of Holy Cross. She learned to love
gardening from her mother, who is a 99-yearold
master gardener in Colorado, and still
starts everything from seed. After a pilgrimage
to Fatima and Lourdes in 2002, she was
inspired to plant a Mary Garden. She didn’t
know at that time that there were so many
plants named for Mary....500 of them! After
the Reformation, the names changed so as
Pettinelli is an extension instructor in the
Department of Plant Science at the University
of Connecticut. She manages the UConn
Home and Garden Education Center and the
UConn Soil Nutrient Analysis Laboratory.
Both facilities provide information, testing
and advice to homeowners and commercial
clientele. Dawn was the master gardener coordinator
for Worcester County Cooperative
Extension in Massachusetts. A lifelong gardener,
Dawn was also a horticulturist at Old
Sturbridge Village. Since 1987 she has been
writing gardening columns for local newspapers
and is involved in adult and youth education
efforts focusing primarily on soil quality
and fertility. She has appeared on the Martha
Stewart Show, the History Channel, Fox
News and on local CT television stations. Her
articles have been published in Radius and
Connecticut Gardener magazines, and recently
she began the Master Composter Program
in Connecticut.
Gline has been interested in horticulture
since age 12, studied vocational horticulture
in high school and attended the Thompson
School at the University of New Hampshire
in Durham. She was a Horticultural intern
at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY for two
years and started her own fi rm, The Landscape
Designer, in 2005. Her ability to design
a landscape, using a balanced selection
of hardy deciduous, evergreen and perennial
plant materials leads her to design an everlasting
arrangement of beautiful shapes, texture,
color with outstanding seasonal interests. Her
select clients continue to be satisfi ed with her
original designs and the “low maintenance” results
as originally promised. Nancy’s installed
landscape plans are available for viewing and
located throughout Worcester County.
