The illustration of the tree on the cover of
this Annual Report shows very strong roots,
a strong and firm trunk, and many limbs
that are expanding. It is reflective of our
outreach with a very stable foundation,
linked to Baystate Medical Center and
Baystate Health, as it branches out in a
number of clinical specialties, clinical
programs, and communities.

A message from
Loring S. Flint, MD
President, BAPO, BMERF, and BVS
and
Gordon W. Josephson, MD
Chief Operating Officer, BMP
2009, what an exciting year! Despite the recession, the performance of the Baystate Medical Practices, on all
measures, was the strongest in our history. Our quality measures are now ranked with the best nationally. Patient
satisfaction reached its strongest levels in a decade. Our fiscal performance, despite the recession and meager
increases in managed care rates, was also strong. These accomplishments are remarkable and reflect the ongoing
commitment and dedication of all our practitioners and practice associates to our multiple missions.
We will look back at this period as a time when we chose to renew and refresh our entire practice enterprise.
Most important has been our decision to consolidate all of our physician entities into a single multi-specialty
practice and to commit to performance improvement in a wide range of areas. This is a unique opportunity for
our organization. We are, by far, the largest group practice in western Massachusetts with the widest geographic
reach, with numerous strengths to cultivate success:
• Outstanding clinicians
• An academic and educational focus unique in our region
• Leading edge technology
• Hospital and outpatient facilities second to none
However, these factors alone will not predict or drive our success, particularly in light of dramatic changes in our
health care environment. Behind these important building blocks, we must show strength in three important areas:
1. External/Customer Service
This includes both the patients who honor us with their trust to care for them and their families, as well as
our colleagues who rely on us to share in the care of their patients. Access to care and patient satisfaction
are key in this important area.
2. Coordination of Care
Our care must be seamless. This will demand crisp handoffs and timely communication.
3. Value
Our care must be cost effective with outstanding clinical outcomes.
Organizations that are committed to excellence in these three areas will thrive in the future. We are poised to
become one of these organizations, but to do so, we must transform ourselves from, in the words of Jim Collins,
“good” to “great.” We need strong leadership and commitment to excellence. We need a sustained effort. We
need provider and leader accountability. In the end, we need nothing less than a major cultural transformation.
It is truly our distinctive honor to have been able to lead these organizations during this past year and throughout
a portion of our long and rich history. It is remarkable that it has been 23 years since the first annual member
meeting took place for the BMERF organization. We’ve had 18 years of community-based service from our BAPO
organization, and a two-year evolution of the BVS programs. Collectively we have seen millions of patients,
authored thousands of research articles, reviewed millions of dollars of research, and provided an incredible
number of services to the neediest citizens in our community.
Now, as we evolve and create new and exciting Baystate Medical Practices, we look forward to working diligently
with you to build on our legacy of care and caring.
Baystate Medical Practices
Our Story, Our Growth
The Baystate Medical Practices (BAPO, BMERF, and BVS) have experienced phenomenal growth since the humble inception
of BMERF in 1986. At the first annual meeting, there were 35 practitioners present, organized in seven departments of
Medicine, Pediatrics, Ob/Gyn, Surgery, Pathology, Ambulatory Care, and Psychiatry. Many changes have taken place over
this period of time.
One of the key growth strategies for Baystate Medical Practices has been to support the ongoing development of programs
for the community in its support of Baystate Health’s mission. Over the years, various individual practices have consolidated
into regional centers of excellence, such as the Baystate Regional Cancer Program with Baystate Surgical Program. In each
annual report, there are a number of new programs that have been offered to our community that have been developed and
supported by members of our medical practices. As we are now emerging as one unified physician organization, we have
much to be proud of in our history and development. The strength of an organization lies with the individual and small
group contributions. It certainly has been our history, one that we will continue to grow and expand as we now move
forward into a new successful era.
While practice name changes, program consolidations, and program expansions make it difficult to outline an exact history,
our legacy has been and continues to be the dedication and commitment of all of the practitioners in the Baystate Medical
Practices. The quality of exceptional education, research, and community service has been unwavering from the beginning.
Provider Growth
Our extraordinary growth since the mid-1980s
and retention of dedicated providers and staff
are just two examples of the commitment to the
Baystate Health mission.
As we strive to be the workplace of choice, it
is the dedication and hard work of these
providers, our practice staff, and administrative
leadership, that has transformed BMP from its
humble start in 1986 to the largest multispecialty
group in western Massachusetts.
We continue to be dedicated to improving the
health of the people in our communities every
day, with quality and compassion.
The first residency training programs, internal medicine
and surgery, began at Springfield Hospital (later named Baystate
Medical Center) in 1948. The newest residency program is
psychiatry, which in July 2009 recruited the first four residents
in the four-year program. Baystate Medical Center currently
sponsors 10 residencies and 15 fellowship programs that are
accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical
Education (ACGME).
Over the past quarter century, since 1985, the number of ACGMEaccredited
residency and fellowship programs has grown from
11 to 25, and from 131 trainees to 319 trainees projected for
2010-2011. Our residency graduates go on to highly competitive
fellowship programs as well as clinical practice in the region,
across the United States, and around the world.
Extramural research funding (total, including both direct
costs and indirect costs) for members of Baystate Medical
Practices, by academic year from 2006 to 2009.
There is variation in funding as shown because awards are
recognized in the year awarded, even if the project is across
multiple years. There is additional extramural funding for
community service grants and contracts (not shown).
The number of peer-reviewed publications from Baystate
Medical Center beginning in 2005 shows a doubling during this
period. Most of these publications include members of the
Baystate Medical Practices, and many of these publications
represent collaborations across departments (each publication
is counted only once). In addition to the contribution to the
discovery of new information, the scholarly work represented by
these publications is also an important component of the residency
and fellowship graduate medical education programs at Baystate
Medical Center. Faculty can submit and also review their
individual publications using the institutional publication database,
which is at http://scholarlypubs.org/pubdatabase/.
