Mother-Daughter Team’s Bath Line Infused with Global Consciousness Q&A with Rose Creamer and Stacey Guymer, Co-Founders of Sweet Leaf Bath Co. When MOMpreneur® learned about the dynamic mother-daughter team behind Sweet Leaf Bath Co. in St. Marys, Ont., their commitment to develop products with internationally sourced, wholesome ingredients caught our attention. When we learned they are only one of eight body care companies in Canada licensed by TransFair Canada to sell “fair trade certified” products, we knew we had to find out more… Rose Creamer and her daughter, Stacey Guymer launched their company in 2007 when the two realized a common desire to develop products that would somehow have a global benefit. Rose was recently retired and Stacey, at home with her two young sons, was ready to pursue something new. They had spent years in Rose’s kitchen experimenting making soaps and lotions. With Stacey’s background in aromatherapy, reflexology and herbology and Rose’s keen business sense honed through a 32-year career as a business manager, they created their line of globally conscious bath and beauty products. “We handcraft our entire line sourcing out fair trade raw ingredients to ensure that a fair price is paid to the producers in developing countries,” explains Stacey. “We have really tried to create a line that is ‘good for the world, good for your skin’ which isn’t just a tag line to us. We’re creating something that ultimately has lessened our carbon footprint, helped someone in another continent and smelled great to boot!” Sweet Leaf bar soaps, body scrubs, lip balms, body butters and Dead Sea bath soaks are all made without the use of synthetic ingredients. Pure essential oils scent their line and locally grown herbs add colour and texture. Here’s more of what they shared with us about their business, their relationship, and working as a fair trade licensee… Q: When you work are you still “mother and daughter”? Yes, that’s who we are and you can’t just check it at the door but we did need to find a balance. We realized early on that we both had our own strengths and weaknesses and once that was established we took on our own leadership roles within the company. We’re lucky because we have a fantastic relationship so this has worked for us. That’s not to say that we’re perfect; we are family after all and there have been “moments”. It’s how we deal with those moments that has made us and Sweet Leaf that much stronger. Q: How are decisions made? An unwritten rule for us is that if we don’t both agree then we don’t move forward with an idea. If I bring something to the table that my mom doesn’t like, it’s not dead in the water; I just have to find the right argument to convince her and vice versa. Somehow we always end up on the same page in the end though anyway. When you’re mother and daughter but also partners , it’s important that you both feel like you have equal amounts of respect, otherwise it won’t work. Q: Why did you decide to source your ingredients outside of Canada? When we made the decision to create a line that was fair trade, it meant we would need to source out ingredients from outside of Canada. Being a TransFair licensee we are required to purchase our raw ingredients from either a licensed producer or from a fellow licensee who has imported directly from the producer.
