There’s nothing like doing
business with an icon
Uluru is such a breathtaking destination.
I was proud to be able to offer our most
valuable team members this once in a
lifetime experience. Our group went
from one inspiring experience to another.
From guided walks at sunrise and learning
more about Aboriginal culture by creating
our own dot paintings, to dining under the
stars – this was an event none of us will
forget. And memories weren’t the only
things our team brought home with them.
Their new found motivation, ideas and
energy lasted long after our return.
Heathrow Airport’s new $NZ8billion
Terminal 2 moves step closer
Emirates Opens Gateway
EMIRATES HAS LAUNCHED the fi rst direct air bridge
between the Middle East and America’s Northwest, as its
inaugural service from Dubai departed for Seattle-Tacoma
International Airport.
With two dynamic and fast-growing regions now more
closely linked, Emirates’ Seattle service will generate a host
of economic benefi ts; from boosting imports and exports to
creating new markets for business and tourism.
Emirates operates the latest Boeing 777-300ERs on three
of its four daily services from New Zealand to Dubai and
beyond via Australia (the fourth service is operated by the
A380 superjumbo).
Flight EK 229 leaves Dubai daily at 9.50am and arrives at
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport at 1.10pm (local time).
Flight EK 230 departs Seattle at 5.10pm, arriving in Dubai
at 7.40pm the following day (local time).
THE TH NEW TERMINAL, which will be capable of handling 20
million mil m passengers a year, is part of a $NZ12 billion construction
project pr pro that has just had its ‘topping off’ ceremony completed.
To T minimise disruption to passengers, construction of
Terminal Ter 2 is taking place in two phases. The fi rst phase, to
open ope in 2014, sees the creation of the main terminal on the
site sit site of the old Terminal 2 and Queen’s Building.
It also involves the construction of a satellite terminal with
additional aircraft parking stands and passenger gates called
Terminal 2B.
The second phase will extend the main Terminal 2 building
northwards onto the existing Terminal 1 site.
This phase, which will also include the construction of a
second satellite building (T2C), will increase the capacity
of Terminal 2 from 20 million passengers to 30 million
passengers annually.
Opened in 1955, the old Terminal 2 shut in 2009 and was demolished
in 2010. It was Heathrow’s fi rst terminal, originally
called the Europe Building.
Originally designed to deal with 1.2 million passengers a year,
it was dealing with 8 million annually when it closed.
WELLINGTON’S INTERNATIONAL
DEPARTURE FEE GONE
WELLINGTON AIRPORT has confi rmed
the removal of the International Departure
Fee for passengers from 1 April 2012.
The International Departure Fee, known
to many as the Departure Tax, has been
in place at Wellington Airport for over 20
years.
The new prices ensure that travel to and
from Wellington is competitive, with international
charges set to reduce by 39%
over the 5- year period. The reduction in
international charges, combined with incentives
for growth, is expected to help
promote new routes and additional services
to the capital.
The airport has also confi rmed its plan to
invest $65million in aeronautical assets
over the 5-year period. Following the
opening of the Airport’s dual use terminal,
The Rock – ranked 4th best in the world
– the next signifi cant capital development
will be the Southern Terminal expansion.
This will provide increased gate lounge
space and new toilets. The expansion of
the Southern Apron will increase aircraft
capacity to accommodate growth.

“The idea of a Chef’s Table is to present guests with an insider’s pass to the world of
refi nement of the culinary arts.”
Available for a maximum of eight guests, the personalised menu can be of eight to twelve
courses. To add to the enjoyment, the sommelier at the hotel can recommend wines to
The exclusive experience includes Find and his selected team of chefs (minimum three)
COMO HOTELS &
RESORTS OPENS UMA
PUNAKHA IN BHUTAN
COMO HOTELS AND RESORTS will open a sister lodge
to its Uma Paro property in Bhutan to create a new twocentre
opportunity for those seeking cultural discovery
and physical adventure in this remote Himalayan region.
The intimate, 11-room Uma Punakha, a new lodge opening
September 2012, will give guests the opportunity to
explore the enigmatic kingdom of Bhutan at a deeper
level while enjoying the same understated luxury they
have come to appreciate at Uma Paro.
The hotel is situated on a hillside in the verdant Punakha
Valley a 5 hour drive from Paro. This new pairing opens
up the country yet further to COMO guests who seek to
combine the company’s luxury hotel at Paro with Uma’s
trekking itineraries.
Punakha is one of the most precious valleys to the
Bhutanese for it sequesters two of the country’s great
historical attractions: the Temple of the Divine Madman, a
14th century fertility temple dedicated to the Tibetan
Buddhist Saint Drukpa Kuenley, and the Punakha Dzong,
a fortress temple and one of the Kingdom’s administrative
centres where the current King Jigme Khesar Namgyel
Wangchuk and his bride Jetsun Pema were recently
married. Uma Punakha therefore offers a gateway to
this important cultural region, as well as opportunities for
white-water rafting, hiking and cycling under the expert
supervision of Uma’s qualifi ed English-speaking guides.
As to the lodge itself, the location towards the head of
the valley is exceptionally peaceful and an ideal place to
practice yoga. Steep vehicular access to Uma Punakha
is rewarded with bird’s eye views. Bright green terraced
fi elds spread out below, graduating down towards a
dramatic bend in the river, the Mo Chu. Comprised of pale
blue glacial waters, the Mo Chu (female river) joins the Po
Chu (male river) a few miles downstream, the confl uence
marked by the Punakha Dzong. Only a few localstyle
houses are in the viewshed, along with spreading
jacaranda trees and orchards laden with apples. Visit
UNITED FLIGHT
870 – P.S. CLASS
(PREMIUM SERVICE)
FLIGHT REVIEW
By Rob Prince
SAN FRANCISCO – NEW YORK
We had the privilege of fl ying San Francisco to
New York on United Airlines new P.S. (Premium
Service) Class. With lounge access offered with
this service, the journey started out with a relaxed
feel to it. The Boeing 757 we were fl ying on was
confi gured in three classes: First, Business and
Economy, the P.S. Class being First Class.
This is what United refers to as its coast to coast
service and operates between San Francisco
(SFO) – New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX) –
New York (JFK).
Once onboard I was offered a pre-fl ight champagne.
The meal served shortly after our departure
was excellent and after an entrée of prawns,
I chose Fillet Mignon as my main, which was
cooked extremely well and could be said to be
of good restaurant quality. With a dessert of
handmade ice cream out of the way we fi nished
with handmade chocolates and champagne.
United offers infl ight internet service on all
premium service transcontinental fl ights. Simply
launch your web browser while you’re infl ight.
After registering, you will be able to browse the
web or catch up on email on your WiFi enabled
laptop. I found the infl ight entertainment
system to be excellent and the noise reduction
headphones were a plus.
United Airlines advertises the Premium Service
as being selective as it only applies to a trio of
cities. New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco
and that it adds a sophisticated touch to provide a
better experience to bicoastal business travellers.
I for one after experiencing the P.S. service can
certainly recommend it. I think United has got it
right.

HSBC, CHIEF ECONOMIST PAUL BLOXHAM
explains the world’s economic centre of gravity is
returning to the east.
This will not surprise most of us – at a superfi cial
level. We can all see the growth of Asia and
we can all postulate that China and India are
becoming superpowers, but to have the centre of
gravity shift permanently to Asia? Get used to it. It
is happening and has been for 30 years.
A long-term study by HSBC shows that China
and India – respectively the largest and second
largest economies in 1870 – will regain their high
rankings by 2050, with China at number one and
India at number three. And this signals massive
opportunity for the tourism industry – New
Zealand’s included.
Paul Bloxham, told a recent breakfast for selected
bank customers, at Auckland’s Langham Hotel,
that the world’s economic centre of gravity was
moving steadily and inexorably eastwards, from
mid-way between North America and Europe in
1980. It is now to the eastern edge of Europe and
heading into Asia.
This sustained, permanent, polar shift is being
exacerbated by the fi nancial crises in the west.
Europe may have edged back from the abyss,
Paul Bloxham says, but largely as a result of
European Central Bank intervention to become
lender of last resort to other banks. This has
brought stability of a sort but all-important
structural change is yet to be tackled. Not helping
is that the last quarter of 2011 shows Europe’s
economy, as whole, is now in recession.
Greece, Paul Bloxham says, is not going to be the
showstopper; what happens elsewhere in Europe,
after the write-down in Greece’s debt, could be.
All in all, even if Europe can keep heading in the
right direction, it’s going to take some years to
be certain that the oncoming light isn’t another
express train – which will exert a dampening
effect on Europe in the immediately foreseeable
future.
America’s recovery seems equally tenuous. For
example, employment fi gures may appear to be
heading north but this masks the “discouraged
labour force”: people who have simply withdrawn
from the labour market and are not showing up
in the stats.
Worldwide, real growth is currently coming from
the emerging economies: 5.3% growth, compared
with 0.6% in the developed world. New
Zealand’s recovery is good (ish). There has been
a structural shift away from a debt-driven to a
trade-driven economy. Commodity prices are
high and the economy will get a shot in the arm
from the Christchurch reconstruction – when it
gets going. At $30 billion it will represent about
15% of our economy.
This will have a similar effect to that for Australia
from new investment in mining. Advanced
projects in the mining investment pipeline in
Australia account for 15% of that economy.
That represents an unprecedented boom.
Nevertheless, Australia has a two paced economy
– mining and non-mining – with tourism being at
the weakest end of the non-mining sector.
world
TRADE
“RE ORIENTING” OF THE WORLD ECONOMY
By Dai Bindoff
Asia is leading growth internationally. Furthermore,
both China and India look set for a soft
landing this year, with China’s being the softer.
Both are successfully bleeding infl ation out of
their economies. China has made signifi cant
internal changes in emphasis and is in better
shape than it was in 2008/2009 and is looking
at 8.6% growth. Furthermore, it is also much less
dependent on Western economic stimulus. Not
so long ago, about one-third of the stimulus was
from external demand, today that fi gure is almost
nil; China’s economy is being driven almost
entirely by domestic demand.
Riding on the back of the general rise in Asian
wealth, is a matching growth in the Asian middle
classes with discretionary income and an
increasing taste for the fi ner things. These include
travel and tourism to places greatly different from
their own, that know how to look after people both
culturally and in terms of service and material
comfort (and where there are goods that don’t
have “Made in China” on them – because they
can get all they need of those, at home).
Furthermore, the exchange rate won’t necessarily
be the only factor with these people. They already
are, and will continue to be, seriously wealthy.
The urge to pay well to buy the best is very strong
and so, their decision to purchase may not be
driven by how inexpensive something is, but by
how expensive (and value for money, naturally).
Currently, around 500 million Asians fall into
this category; they will number 1.7 billion by
about 2020. And, New Zealand, they are on our
doorstep.
QUEENSTOWN -
“ONE DESTINATION TO BEAT THEM ALL”
By Dai Bindoff
32 nzcorporatetraveller ISSUE 21

queenstown
FEATURE
ATTENDING THE PRO AM makes sense: turning that into
a golf holiday makes even more sense for the fact is, that
Queenstown is not just the golf destination to beat them all,
but the destination to beat them all. It has everything. It surely
has more choice and more difference than any other single
place on earth.
Everything is set within the awe-inspiring alpine landscape that
was Middle Earth in the 11 Oscar winning, Lord of the Rings
trilogy. Mountain ranges create the skyline in every direction,
jagged and imposing in summer, soft and white with snow in
winter. These are home to world-class ski fi elds in winter and
yet it is possible to get from the powder to any one of four
championship golf courses within an hour or so of stepping off
the piste. Where else in the world?
ISSUE 21 nzcorporatetraveller 33

queenstown feature
34 nzcorporatetraveller ISSUE 21
Half of that time is spent getting off the
mountain but if you haven’t been there these
four superlative courses are within half an
hour of each other: Kelvin Heights, the more
recent Jack’s Point, The Hills, and of course,
its near neighbour Millbrook Golf Estate.
These fabulous venues are complemented
by an array of excellent club courses within
easy driving distance throughout “The Lakes
District.”
With rare exceptions and incredibly given how
close the snowfi elds are, most of these courses
are open year round – making Queenstown
and environs, the ultimate golf destination. It
would be very easy to lose a fortnight here,
playing golf on venues whose qualities and
settings are unparalleled – and indulging the
local lifestyle which ranges from the affordable
to the super luxurious and fi t for a king.
Surely, to paraphrase Lord of The Rings, if
there was one ring to bind them, all this would
be “the one golf tour to beat them all”?
But why stop at golf? Queenstown and
surrounds is more than just golf or skiing. It
is an exhilarating pot pourri of choice in all
seasons and if the world has one destination
to beat them all – at almost anything - it must
be Queenstown.
There’s a children’s story that goes: “The little
bear went over the mountain and what do you
think he saw? He saw another mountain.” It
must have been written here. Behind every
mountain range is another more beautiful than
the fi rst for hiking and hunting country in the
warm seasons, ski-ing country in winter.
In the snow free valleys between, there are
dozens of vineyards producing world-class
red and white wines, offering a cellar door
tasting experience and even, in many cases,
a restaurant to please even the Michelin
inspector. They provide an actual feast and a
visual feast: in summer you look out over the
golden tussock lands and green vineyards; in
winter over an unbroken carpet of snow.
From Queenstown the visitor can tour the
country in pampered luxury limousines (on
and off-road) – or by helicopter; they can
drive, trek and cycle through the vast open
spaces; fi sh the crystal waters for trout and
salmon; tour the historic gold mines that made
Otago fabulously rich. Adrenaline addicts
have options in bungy jumping (the modern
concept was invented right here), sky-diving,
paragliding and jet boating.
In and around the town itself, quality and luxury
are the bywords. Queenstown knows it has
caught the attention of the world’s wealthiest
and its discerning travellers at all budget
levels. It remains affordable and comfortable
for the backpacker and yet at the top end it
boasts 5-star resorts, lodges and hotels, the
equivalent in luxury lake cruising and limousine
services, helicopter and aeroplane services
and adventures, restaurants, vineyards and
food and wines.
A bad day here is better than a good day
anywhere else this side of heaven.
ARROWTOWN
The gold rush that overwhelmed Arrowtown 150 years
ago this year will be brought back to life in a full scale reenactment
on the exact anniversary, as part of a weekend of
celebrations and commemorations.
The New Zealand gold rush was one of the world’s great gold
booms and Arrowtown was and remains among the most
picturesque of the old gold towns. Many have ceased to exist
but Arrowtown has worked itself into the national psyche, so
much so that 8000 people turned up in 1987 to celebrate
the 125th anniversary.
Celebrations are planned to start on Friday 19 October
and run through a packed ‘bill of fare’ to conclude with a
golf tournament the following Monday. The gold rush reenactment
is planned for the Saturday with a ball in the
evening.
Unoffi cially, the celebrations will start to become scruffi ly
evident around mid-August with men urged to grow a
luxuriant beard in the early Victorian style, to be offi cially
shaved off as part of the weekend’s festivities.
GIBBSTON VALLEY WINES –
BIRTHPLACE OF AN INDUSTRY
WHEN FORMER TV JOURNALIST Alan Brady
planted the fi rst grapes at Gibbston Valley in the
1980s, he had a dream that Central Otago could
be “the Rhine of New Zealand”. That dream has
come true. From that (much derided) inspiration
has grown the entire, internationally acknowledged,
Central Otago wine industry.
Christopher Keys, Chief Winemaker since 2006,
has met the challenge of instilling something of his
own within the bottle while retaining the quality for
which Gibbston Valley is renowned and which has
seen it win more than 300 national and international
awards. From his knowledge of Central Otago, Keys
has created the multi-award winning Expressionist
series, a selection of outstanding wines that overdeliver
in taste and complexity.
Recent accolades include Pure Gold Elite at the
2011 Air New Zealand Wine Awards for the 2010
Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir while the 2008 Reserve
Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir was the Trophy Champion
With a quality restaurant open between noon and
Gibbston Valley Winery has a well deserved
reputation on the Central Otago wine trail among
gourmets, wine connoisseurs and plain old
hedonists alike.
The Wine Cave is well worth visiting – tours operate
on the hour between 10am and 4pm, offering
the opportunity to taste 3 of the winery’s release
wines inside the cave. Private lunches with the
winemakers can be arranged.
The winery has also become an events centre for
the region with its summer concerts and Harvest
headline concert acts were the Doobie Brothers
and Little River Band. Last year it was CCR and Dr
40 nzcorporatetraveller ISSUE 21
AS WE LEFT THE WAKATIPU GRILL at Hilton’s Kawarau Village Hotel, my
touch enchanted by Jarryd).
Originally from Bombay, young and bursting with knowledge, Jarryd was our Hiltontrained
us being distracted from the gorgeous view from the terrace across the lake to
Frankton. Waves moving away from us soon made it apparent that the Hilton is built
with “its back to the wind”, pleasantly sheltering us. It’ll be cosy in winter.
Two settled on scallops as entree, the third for seared tuna. The former were
delicious but the tuna was sublime – the best ever to pass across these tunaloving
taste buds. And Jarryd was spot on: Clearview 2010 Chardonnay was a deft
complement.
He was right again with the slightly more muscular Wooing Tree 2010 Chardonnay
for the salmon, Escarpment 09 Pinot Noir for the Bill French lamb and Gibbston
Valley Blanc de Pinot Noir 2011 for the chicken.
I can’t imagine life without salmon but I’m diffi cult to impress; the last time I went
weak at the knees was 40 years ago, on the fi rst Island Princess – TV’s “The Love
Boat”. It happened again this night. Enough said.
Normally, I won’t touch lamb but this was billed as “eco produced” Bill French
lamb and it came medium rare. Curious, I deigned to sample a morsel and humbly
confess that, between the eco producing and the kitchen, extraordinary things had
happened. So extraordinary I might even be tempted to try it again.
Desserts included a deconstructed cheesecake, in an Agee preserving jar (different)
while the chocolate on chocolate on chocolate confection was an unashamed way
to overdose on ..... chocolate. Some people’s ideal way to die.
Overall? Superb in all departments: exquisite location; friendly, attentive, people
expert in their craft; and sublime food and wine. Executive chef Peter Thornley,
JACK’S POINT THE EQUAL OF AUGUSTA NATIONAL
JACK’S POINT is the newest championship course in the Queenstown area
– and according to gold legend Sir Bob Charles, the fairways are the equal
even of Augusta National with the greens not far behind.
It’s across the lake from Queenstown itself with the impossibly jagged
Remarkables on one side and the great Lake Wakatipu on the other.
Like Millbrook, Jack’s Point is the centrepiece of a larger community being
developed over 1200 hectares on a site above the golf course itself. Master
architect of the development is the renowned Ian Athfi eld. The course
architects were John Darby and Partners whose impressive record already
includes Clearwater, venue for the New Zealand Open, and The Hills, home
to the new NZPGA Pro Am launching this year
The course offers four tee positions with the longest (championship course)
being 7200 yards, par 72. Darby’s have designed it around the natural
contours, landforms and obstacles of the terrain, with minimal human
interference. This has resulted in a track that traverses wetland and the lake
ALL THE DESCRIPTIONS of Kelvin Heights
Golf Club start by saying that it is one of the
most picturesque courses in New Zealand if
not the world. They are undoubtedly right but it
might also do an injustice to the fact that it’s a
championship quality course that despite being
short by modern standards (a tick over 3000
metres), it yet remains par 72.
So the view might be terrifi c (which it is) but the
course itself is not be taken lightly and will hold
attention delightfully even on a bad day.
The course is one of two that form the
Queenstown Golf Club. It was established in 1973
and designed with advice from Commander
John Harris who had just built the world-famous
Wairakei Course at Taupo. Considering that
edge, steep bluffs, and throws up many traps for the unwary in including
the indigenous vegetation augmented with careful plantings to complement
the natural environment.
Century-old stone walls have been left in place as a link to the past when this
was high country farming territory
It is defi nitely a challenging golf course but one that does give golfers a
fi ghting chance if they pay attention and apply themselves – not the easiest
of tasks, however, given that each hole is aligned to take full advantage of
stupendously beautiful views.
The Jack’s Point development has been 12 years in the planning and
when complete will have some 1300 private homes, a lakeside village with
accommodation, restaurants and a luxury lodge that is predicted to be “a
diamond in the rough” – all designed on sustainable principles.
Kelvin Heights tight and challenging in the king of locations
its only local competition at the time was the
Arrowtown Club, it was ahead of its time and has
stood up well in relation to later developments. It
remains today, accepted in the same company
as The Hill’s, Millbrook and Jack’s Point as one of
the four premier courses in the region.
The course rambles across the very tip of
the Kelvin Peninsula across the bay from
Queenstown itself. This means it’s almost
completely surrounded by the fabulously scenic
Lake Wakatipu and, seen from the Queenstown
side, is set against the backdrop of the jawdropping
Remarkables.
Although surrounded by the lake, it only becomes
a water obstacle on the magnifi cent 5th hole. The
fi fth curves to the left and any hook or pull is likely
to end with a gentle “kerplunk” and a lost stroke.
The elevated 7th is also a serious challenge.
The majority of the holes are par 4, with three
par 5s. Some say it has a lot of “blind holes” –
others say that that’s what sorts the golfers from
the triers. Certainly it doesn’t stop people from
coming back.
Convenience also runs in Kelvin Heights’
favour. It’s the closest championship course to
Queenstown and can be accessed by way of a
brief water taxi ride across the lake. The drive out
takes you through Frankton, home to the other
facility operated by the Queenstown Club – a
9-hole course, driving range and golf academy.
MILLBROOK -
27 HOLES OF STUNNING GOLF RESORT
MILLBROOK HAS BEEN the best golf resort in
Australasia for the last two years. That’s according
to the prestigious World Travel Awards voted for
by 183,000 travel agents worldwide.
As a bonus, the World Travel Awards voted it the
best Golf Resort in New Zealand this year as well.
And it has been named best golf course in the
world by a leading Australian travel magazine.
The fi rst win, in 2010, coincided with Millbrook
becoming a 27-hole course – with the addition
of the Greg Turner-designed Coronet Nine
to complement the supremely challenging
Remarkables Nine designed by the legendary Sir
Bob Charles and the Arrow Nine.
The original 18 formed the links course that
attracted international renown and attracted
players the world over.
Having 27 holes opens a huge range of choice,
giving the option of any two sets of 9 for a round.
It is even possible to select so many holes from
all three to arrive at the 18. This mix and match
option means that you may never play the same
combination twice, for months if not years.
It also means that Millbrook need never be closed
for maintenance because it can take 9 holes out
of service at any time and still leave 18 holes in
operation. Historic Millbrook is, however, more
than an international golf course. It is a 5-star
luxury resort and community in its own right, with
a huge choice of accommodation, a day spa, the
Millhouse fi ne dining restaurant and bar and a
conference venue.
The spa is stand-alone – it is not attached to
either the hotel or the golf course per se, and is
there for non-golfers and even the general public
– and is acknowledged as one to the 10 best spas
in the world.
The accommodation ranges from studios, suites
and villas, to cottages and Fairway homes of up to
four bedrooms. Some have year-round residents,
some are available for guest hire – all sumptuously
appointed, all recently stunningly refurbished in
a multimillion dollar upgrade. And they are all
remarkably affordable – giving real effect to the
Japanese owners’ vision that Millbrook shall be a
place for everybody.
These facilities along with a health and fi tness
centre, sauna, hot and swimming pools, tennis
and volleyball, yoga and exercise classes,
members’ only tournaments golf coaching and
three-day golf schools are elements that comprise
the Millbrook Country Club.
Remarkably, in light of all that it has to offer –
and a further 500 acres under development
– Millbrook is still 95% open space, providing a
tranquil oasis next door to historic Arrowtown,
beside picturesque Lake Hayes, nestled at the
foot of Coronet Peak.
It is itself historic. The land is a former wheatfi eld
established to supply the thousands of miners
packing into the area following the discovery of
gold at Arrowtown 150 years ago this year and
somehow retains a golden glow in summer.
Millbrook was the original fl our mill and the
history has been lovingly retained.
The resort may have been here but 20 years,
but the trees lining its iconic access avenue are
150 years old. The original millwheel is still here
and still turning (and showing how remarkably
good those 19th century engineers really were).
The Millhouse fi ne dining restaurant is another
connection with the past and the entire resort
is testament to the generosity of the Ishi family
of Japan, who wanted to create something to be
the envy of the world and yet remain a place for
everybody.
NZPGA and The Hills launch
the New Zealand Pro Am
THE WORLD HAS A NEW INTERNATIONAL
GOLF championship: The $500,000 NZPGA
Pro Am Championship to be played at The Hills
at the end of March, and to form part of the
Australasian PGA Tour for the next 5 years (with
an option for a further 10).
This event – a partnership between the NZPGA
and The Hills – will well and truly cement the
Queenstown area as one of the world’s great golf
destinations. And that’s just for starters. This year
the Pro Am will be staged between Thursday 28
March and Sunday 1 April at The Hills.
The offi cial cocktail party is being hosted on 30
March, at the architectural jewel that is the new
5-star Hilton Queenstown in Kawarau Village,
offi cial accommodation provider to the event.
Like Sir Michael Hill – the founder of The Hills
– the partnership’s chairman John Hart (former
All Black coach) is not one to think small and
rapid growth is planned. Inspired by Scotland’s
Alfred Dunhill Links Championships which is
played over several courses, the New Zealand
Pro Am may be played in future, over up to
three world-class championship courses around
Queenstown. It is also intended to be part of the
44 nzcorporatetraveller ISSUE 21
lucrative OneAsia Tour by as soon as next year –
all of which will be a magnifi cent boost for New
Zealand golf as a whole (no pun intended).
This year it will be contested between 64 professionals
and 64 invited amateurs/celebrities. The
pros will play four rounds and those making the
cut, will be joined by the amateurs over the fi nal
two rounds. It has already attracted a class fi eld.
At the time of writing, the well performed New
Zealand and International golfers signed up
included South African David Frost, Australian
Brendan Jones, New Zealand’s Phil Tataurangi,
and current poster girl for women’s golf, 14-yearold
Lydia Ko.
So a top class fi eld will be going head to head at
a golf course judged by Sir Bob Charles as the
best golf course in New Zealand.
The Hills’ is 7000 yards from tip to tip, sprawling
over 500 challenging acres in the foothills of
Coronet Peak – in winter one of the world’s great
ski fi elds.
According to Sir Bob Charles, you can beat the
course but you can’t lose your concentration
and beat it. No two holes are similar, no two
fairways are in parallel. It has a lot of water, a lot
of tussock for rough, characterful sculptures and
mountain ranges in every view shaft.
It gives its address as Arrowtown, one of New
Zealand’s most historic settlements. Arrowtown
fl ourished fi rst as a centre in the 19th century
Otago gold rush.
Driving out here from Queenstown (possibly in
a RR Silver Shadow or Bentley Flying Spur from
Black ZQN) you arrive at an intersection that can
bring on palpitations in a serious golfer, for this
is Millbrook Corner. Decision time: do you turn
right to The Hills or left to the famous Millbrook
Golf Resort, now with 27 holes, just 500 metres
away?
In terms of reputation, The Hills is already
“getting up there”. It developed an international
reputation as the intensely scenic and challenging,
host to three consecutive New Zealand
Opens and now is set to build on that reputation
through the NZPGA Pro Am, an event that
world’s top golfers will want to do – if only once
to allow them to die happy.
RETURN OF MAIN STREET FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL
MAIN STREET is a food and wine festival showcasing the best the region
and New Zealand has to offer. The festival made its fi rst appearance when
the New Zealand Open was at The Hills. Now it’s back for the Pro Am.
The new Main Street will be between the 14th and 15th fairways with about
15 stalls. This and a kids’ area offers something for those not obsessed with
every shot being played and helps turn the tournament into an “experience”
with something for everyone. Offi cial accommodation provider Hilton Hotel
plans to extend the Main Street concept even further by offering its 5-star
day spa experience in a marquee on Main Street (and and is also setting up
its Me and Mee Noodle Restaurant there).

NZ CORPORATE TRAVELLER INTERVIEWS
DARREN MCGOLDRICK, MD OF EXECUJET AUSTRALASIA
Tell us briefl y about your job and your career background.
I have been with ExecuJet for over 10 years, and was appointed Managing
Director in 2010. Prior to this I held the dual role as Finance Director and
Deputy Managing Director responsible for the fi nance, commercial and
support services side of the business in Australasia.
I have over 25 years experience in various commercial, fi nancial and
management roles commencing with Chartered Accountants, KPMG, and
have since worked in the commercial arena in the construction, hospitality
and aviation industries.
If you were fl ying your own aircraft, would you use ExecuJet and why?
What differentiates your services from those of others?
Absolutely, our facilities and staff are the best. Without any doubt. I see the
passion and commitment of our staff on a daily basis
as they constantly strive to offer the highest
quality service to our clients.
Is branding important to you and
ExecuJet?
Yes very, we have built a strong
brand and worked very hard
at connecting with our customers and the
Business Aviation Industry at large. They
recognise and associate our brand as a premium
quality service provider.
We are making sure that every location has the
ExecuJet look & feel and there is consistency
in our service offering. This is what it means to
be a global, recognisable brand. It is not just
the colour of your brochures but the level of
service and the attention to detail that make
the difference.
Darren McGoldrick,
MD of ExecuJet Australasia
ExecuJet has just opened two new Fix Base
Operations (FBO) in Australasia – in fact the fi rst FBOs in the region even
though you have been present in Australia for a while now. Why now?
For the Wellington FBO the timing was right with the construction of a new
facility by Wellington Airport and the management of our client’s Gulfstream
550 relocating to New Zealand.
With regards to Melbourne, we had a pressing need to expand our workshop
and offi ce facilities. It made sense to add the FBO into the facility at this time
and to be able to offer this additional service to our growing client base in
Melbourne.
ExecuJet Hangar in Wellington
ExecuJet’s Melbourne FBO
ExecuJet facility in Melbourne and Gulfstream GIV-SP available for charter
In both locations we felt there was a gap in the market for the offering
of a world class FBO service.
Wellington is a beautiful city but do you think it is the right place
for an exclusive FBO? Which clientele do you expect to use the
facility?
Yes, we agree Wellington is a beautiful city that we are very happy to
be associated with.
Wellington International Airport wanted to have a world-class facility
to handle business jets, VIP movements and heads of state visits in
a manner appropriate to the New Zealand capital.
ExecuJet were appointed after a tender submission process, to
manage a purpose built FBO and maintenance facility.
Given that it is a small market with low movements, we felt the
best business model was to form a strategic alliance with Capital
Jet Services an existing, well established and well respected FBO
operator. Capital Jet Services would relocate its FBO business into
the new facility and run the FBO on a daily basis, but become part
of the ExecuJet network of FBOs (16 ExecuJet FBOs operating in 4
continents).
This, along with having a hangar facility for our Wellington-based
managed Gulfstream G550, made the decision to be in Wellington
a viable one.
Whilst movements are relatively low in Wellington, we believe that
having a world-class facility for the New Zealand capital, will see
additional FBO traffi c. We are also confi dent that locating the
Gulfstream G550 to Wellington will increase charter activity.
We certainly will be looking at opportunities to manage additional
aircraft in the region and to identify prospective owners and users of
business jets and to assist them in the acquisition process.

Capital Jet Services are located at Queenstown and Christchurch in addition to
Wellington and work in co-operation with Air Centre One in Auckland. ExecuJet
will be working with Capital Jet Services in these locations as our preferred
handling agents and FBOs.
What are the challenges of opening facilities in different regions of the world?
Aside from their cultural diversity, each location has its idiosyncrasies and
ensuring a standardised, high level service consistently can present its
challenges on a daily basis. Recruiting staff is a critical element for the success
of any business. Finding the staff who understand the requirement to handle
corporate aircraft and provide fi rst-class professional service with a ‘can do’
attitude is a challenge everywhere.
What do you think most people still do not know about private aviation? What
advice or insight would you like to give them?
I think the whole industry is still battling the mis-conception of business jet travel
being purely a luxury service. There are many advantages to private jet travel
and, while it is true that private jet travel can be luxurious, the real advantages
of fl ying on a private aircraft are convenience, effi ciency, privacy and security.
Especially if we talk about regions like Australia or New Zealand, one aspect that
I guess most people will understand is that private aviation offers you access to
remote locations which are not serviced by commercial airlines.
What are your goals in life – professional and / or private?
To lead ExecuJet as a successful aviation company in the region offering the
best service across all aspect of our business and for ExecuJet to be fi rst of
mind in our customers or potential customers seeking aviation support solutions
in aircraft management, sales and acquisitions, charter, maintenance and
FBO services.
SYDNEY, one of the busiest commercial hubs in the Asia-Pacifi c region and perennially in lists of the
10 best cities in the world, is reconfi rming its position as a premiere destination for major international
events with the creation of the Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct.
The new 12-hectare development will have at least 40,000m 2 of world-class facilities encompassing
exhibition space, fl exible plenary spaces with a combined capacity for up to 10,000 delegates, capacity
to host sporting, musical and theatrical events for up to 12,000 people and banqueting facilities for a
minimum of 4000 people.
The new precinct complements a world city that already offers visitors a huge variety of top-class
tourist attractions, designer boutiques and fi ne restaurants. Sydney’s natural beauty and world-class
infrastructure and facilities make it the ideal business event destination. With internationally renown
icons like the bustling harbour, the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, there’s no wonder visitors
return to Sydney time and time again. There is not just the city, but also the nearby regions of the
Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Hunter Valley – all within a couple of hours of the central business
The Sydney Opera House, on its heritage location at Bennelong Point, is one of the world’s most
memorable venues. Functional as well as beautiful, it offers a choice of magnifi cent spaces for any
style of event, from product launches, corporate dinners, conferences, celebrations and gala dinners
to unforgettable events of grand scale.
The much anticipated opening of Park Hyatt Sydney in February 2012 showcases the most
stylish venues for up to 150 guests. The Gallery features art works commissioned from renowned
Following an $A860 million redevelopment, Sydney’s Star City Casino has re-launched as The Star, a
A 3000m 2 extension houses a new dining area with 20 new restaurants, bars and cafes, all set on an
The Darling, a new 5-star hotel, has also launched as part of the redevelopment. The new hotel added
171 rooms and suites to the existing apartment-style and tower hotel offerings, a day spa equipped
with 16 private rooms delivering an array of Asian and European-inspired treatments and a 25-metre
swimming pool with outdoor cabanas and bars. A sophisticated new retail collection of more than 20
retail stores is home to some of the world’s leading luxury brands.
The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre unveiled a spectacular new website late last year,
packed with new features including a 3D Sydney fl y-over and a virtual restaurant for cooking up
delicious events.
The new site brings the Centre’s acclaimed cuisine to the fore, allowing event organisers to design
their own custom menus from hundreds of beautifully presented dishes by Executive Chef Uwe
Pullman Olympic Park Sydney –
Gold Medal Performance
By Janice Burmaz
54 nzcorporatetraveller ISSUE 21
THE PULLMAN OLYMPIC PARK SYDNEY shares a unique location. This destination hosted
what many still consider to be the ‘best ever’ Olympics back in 2000, but today its fame comes
largely from a very different source – as one of Australia’s largest and most successful corporate
parks and business events venues.
Olympic Park is situated on the outskirts of Sydney, approximately 14km drive from downtown
along the M4 Western Freeway via Parramatta. The Pullman hotel sits opposite a precinct
famous for its gold-medal sporting achievements, Sydney’s Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. You
can achieve your personal best at the golf driving range, cycling and jogging tracks. Enjoy quiet

efl ection in the reading nook, a guided exercise programme in the sanctuary
of your private guest room, or an inspired session in the 24-hour fi tness centre.
The Pullman will certainly get your heart racing.
After a busy working day in the city, the personal welcome I received at the
Pullman front desk was more than just friendly, making me feel like I was a star
Olympic performer but without entourage. After checking into my executive
suite, I was invited to enjoy a happy hour drink on the 16th fl oor. I sat and
contemplated how best to utilise my time while enjoying the panoramic views
over the park woodlands and back towards the cityscape.
Wasting no time at all, it was back to my room for my sports shoes and a quick
change to go and check out the fi tness centre facility. Hotel guests (business
club) get complimentary access to the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre,
pools, gym, spa and sauna. Nearby there is also golf, tennis, cycling, sports
events, concerts, shopping, hockey, archery and walking tracks.
Passing through the lobby I caught a glimpse of the chic signature restaurant
‘Bacar’ with its open kitchen and wine bar in the most contemporary looking
design. The wine bar is perfect for casual dining over tasting plates, offering a
great selection of fi ne wines and Sommelier ‘samples’. The restaurant can seat
up to 100 guests, including a chef’s table for ten and a private dining room
with seating for up to sixteen. After my visit to the Aquatic centre, I ordered a
Chicken Caesar salad from Bacar to be delivered to my room so as not to miss
out on the stunning views from the 20th fl oor.
The Pullman is exceptionally well set up for seminars and group meetings.
The rooms are designed around quality and innovation, three meeting rooms
will hold up to 220 delegates all with superior connectivity raising the business
‘bar’ with wireless/broadband internet throughout the hotel and the personal
support of an in-house IT Solutions Manager. I had reason to call him up and
he was oh so helpful.
Central to all attractions, The Pullman at Sydney Olympic Park sets the
environmental benchmark in upscale accommodation. Contemporary in style
and unmatched in attentive service, check in and chill out here, it defi nitely
performs well above its 5-star rating. Visit pullmanhotels.com
MERCURE SYDNEY - central to the city
By Janice Burmaz
TWAS THE WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS…… arriving at Sydney airport at such a
busy time of the year I was well prepared for my working week. I signed for my rental
car, collected it from outside the terminal front doors and in just under 20 minutes with
directions from my Australian speaking Tom Tom, I was pulling up outside the Mercure. A
smiling concierge and a speedy check in made for one of the most seamless hotel arrivals
yet. My room was well set up with a large fl atscreen LCD television, broadband internet
and offi ce desk and pulling back the curtains, fantastic views of the city. I ventured up to
the rooftop fl oor to scope out the indoor swimming pool and gym to fi nd an even more
amazing vista. Guests can work out on their treadmill while taking in the panorama of the
central business district through fl oor-to-ceiling windows. This is such an uplifting place
to start or end your day and contributed a great deal to my busy week.
Four Elements Restaurant and Bar is conveniently located on the 1st fl oor of the hotel
and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, providing a wide range of delicious local and
international cuisine. At street level you can sit back and
experience the lively atmosphere of Eve’s Place while
you enjoy a beer or shake up a cocktail or two from the
bar menu.
The Mercure really is perfectly located making it so easy
to work or explore this vibrant city. The Capitol Theatre,
trade feature
Sydney: Gateway to Australia and the World
By Tim Groser, Minister of Trade
AUSTRALIA IS A CRITICAL MARKET for
New Zealand when it comes to achieving our
economic growth targets, including lifting exports
and building more internationalised fi rms. It is
our largest market accounting for a fi fth of our
exports and 16% of imports.
The relationships between our two countries
is exceptionally close and next year we will
celebrate 30 years of Closer Economic Relations
(CER) – once described as “the world’s
most comprehensive, effective and mutually
compatible free trade agreement.”
CER creates a common market of 27 million
people who have a natural affi nity based on
geography and shared historical links, values and
institutions. It increases the effective size of New
Zealand’s domestic market six-fold, and provides
Australia with access to another market the size
of Queensland.
Following up on CER, successive New Zealand
and Australian governments have committed
to one day creating a Single Economic Market
(SEM) to make doing trans-tasman business as
easy as doing business at home.
The (Australian) Bureau of Resources and
Energy Economics reports that in the six months
to October 2011, investment in the resources
sector reached a record $A231.8 billion, up from
$A173.5 billion in April. Such growth generates
enormous demand for specialised plant and
machinery, engineering services and other
industry solutions. The mining boom, in particular,
is creating opportunities for manufacturers.
New South Wales’ (internationally signifi cant)
economy is a microcosm of Australia’s. Over
80% of industry income is from services and
NSW also has the largest manufacturing sector in
Australia and it is the base for many of the smaller
mining operations serviced by New Zealand
60 nzcorporatetraveller ISSUE 21
manufacturers. Other opportunity sectors are
food, beverages, and health
The bilateral goods trade between New Zealand
and New South Wales is over $A15 billion
(Australian Bureau of Statistics 2011) and local
governments have 10-year plans for making NSW
an easier place to do business and developing
infrastructure.
Sydney is specially important with 7.3 million
people. It provides approximately 25% of
Australia’s total GDP, “home” to 90 banks and
half of Australia’s top 500 companies, and 500
multinational corporations.
It has opportunities for New Zealand companies
in virtually every sector and is a potential stepping
stone to other markets. It’s also great place to
gain experience and build scale before tackling
markets like China
Typical of Australia’s eastern cities, Sydney is
so accessible that it can be quicker to source
products from New Zealand than from within
Australia, with many New Zealand companies
running a ‘just in time’ air freight service to
Australian customers.
Connections and Opportunities
Furthermore the relationships are not based on
commercial ties alone. The strength of personal
and family connections across the Tasman is
unique. Accessibility is also two way and the
number of Sydneysiders holidaying in New
Zealand has increased sharply, with the benefi t
that many Australians now perceive New Zealand
as offering sophisticated, quality products and
experiences.
Our goods are well regarded and given preferential
treatment with many entering Australia duty free.
There are also no currency restrictions or visa
requirements. continued over
Not to be Taken for Granted
Being cousins doesn’t mean the business
approach should be less painstaking than
for markets with which we are less familiar.
Complacency in New Zealand’s approach to
Australia has also been counter-productive
to some extent. Underestimating size, labour
market, the regulatory environment, business
culture, complexity and competitiveness is a
common mistake.
Apart from being bigger, Australia has a US-style
state-by-state individuality. Even within New
South Wales, there are 13 business districts not
including Sydney itself.
Many Australian businesses operate out of New
Zealand, which gives Kiwi businesses strong
alignment with Australia, but it doesn’t work
both ways. Most Australians don’t deal with New
Zealanders every day. Successful companies front
their business in Australia with Australians (often
Kiwis who have lived and worked in Australia
for some time). They’ve also been patient and
persistent.
Thus, to better integrate into Australia and improve
export growth, New Zealand companies should
consider setting up in Australia, establishing joint
ventures or buying into distribution chains.
New Zealand fi rms that have succeeded in
Australia have looked to maximise synergies
and leverage differences. Exporters not selling in
Australia should ask why not and those that are
should examine whether they are getting the most
out of the market.
To help fi rms looking to export to and/or build a
business in Australia, NZ Inc agencies like the
Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade and New
Zealand Trade and Enterprise, businesses can
provide high quality advice, market information,
networks, trusted intermediaries and capital.

Singapore’s Marina Bay area now boasts a stunning new Cruise Passenger terminal and the threepart
Gardens By The Bay, Universal Studios’ Transformers – The Ride and a world-class maritime
museum at Resorts World Sentosa.
The new $500 million International Cruise Terminal commands a prominent waterfront location at
Marina South, allowing cruise ships to glide into the hub of central Singapore and moor within 5
minutes drive of the city, 10 minutes of Sentosa Island and 20 minutes of Changi Airport.
Operational this year, the new terminal is two-berth and can accommodate the bigger cruise
ships of around 360 metres long and process about 6000 passengers at one time. It doubles
Singapore’s dedicated cruise liner capacity which currently handles more than 1000 ships and
920,000 passengers a year. The new terminal is expected to be handling 1.6 million passengers
a year within a couple of years.
Gardens By the Bay has the 54 hectare Bay South and the 32 hectare Bay East Gardens linked by
a 3km waterfront promenade called Bay Central. Among its many attractions, Bay South features
Supertrees – vertical gardens of 9 to 16 stories high. It also includes a range of themed gardens
and the Gardens Hub with events and retail. Bay East has food gardens, an edutainment centre
and a water sports arena.
Transformers – The Ride (self-explanatory) opened late last year, several months head of a similar
attraction at Universal Hollywood.
The Maritime Experiential Museum and Aquarium (MEMA) is a fantastic structure, like a massive
up-turned boat. Like good modern museums it is interactive. It specially explores the maritime
silk routes aboard life-size replica ships including replicas of 15th century Chinese Admiral Zheng
He’s massive treasure ship, Bao Chuan and also the Jewel of Muscat, a replica of a 9th century
dhow wrecked off Belitung Island in 830 AD.
The museum is a literal treasure trove of 60,000 Tang Dynasty artefacts salvaged from the Belitung
shipwreck, recovered and conserved by New Zealand’s Seabed Explorations Ltd.
Wenlock
IT’S A MASSIVE YEAR for Britain with the Olympics and
the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee making the UK – and London
in particular – the only place to be this (northern) Summer.
This is going to be possibly the ultimate blend of the ultra
modern and historic pomp and splendour. The Shard – the
tallest building in Europe – and the Thames Gateway Cable
Car will open in May. Two months later road cyclists will
time trial around Hampton Court, where Henry VIII fi rst saw
Anne Boleyn, home to the famous maze and Britain’s oldest
recognisable tennis court.
Historic Horse Guards Parade is becoming a “beach” (for beach volleyball)
while half a dozen events will fi ll the mighty Millennium Dome. Cricket’s
hallowed turf at Lords will host archery – and of course, it’s a short walk to
“that” pedestrian crossing and an irresistible opportunity to graffi ti the wall
out front of Abbey Road studios. Rowing is at Eton Dorney (yes that Eton)
and wheelchair racing is at Brands Hatch. Greenwich is the place by which
the whole world sets its clocks; Greenwich Park will host equestrian events.
Hyde Park is both the fi nish for the triathlon and hosts marathon swimming
(in the Serpentine).
The Games themselves, opening on 27 July, are London’s third and it’s the
only city to host three. Indeed, the whole idea for the modern games may
have been sparked at the town of Much Wenlock – hence Wenlock as a
mascot. The other is Mandeville (after Stoke Mandeville where the idea for
Paralympics originated). In all, the athletes of 204 nations are expected to
make this the biggest fortnight ever, for the “greatest show on earth”.
Britain and London seem to be impressively on top of both accommodation
and transport. London has 100,000 hotel rooms, added to which are the
68 nzcorporatetraveller ISSUE 21
Britain’s Olympian Diamond Jubilee
serviced apartments, B&Bs and what have you. The visitbritain.com website
is brilliant, covering a wide range of information and providing many new
places in which to start looking.
Plans are to have 90% of the Olympic venues served by three or more
types of public transport and 80% of all spectators arriving by rail, with a
proportion on the new Javelin bullet trains, Britain’s fastest (140 mph).
The special Olympic Javelin Service will whisk passengers from St Pancras
to Stratford International Station inside Olympic Park, in just 7 minutes.
Indeed, the Park will be served by ten separate railway lines. All in all,
an additional 4000 train services will run during the Games, bringing a
combined capacity of 240,000 passengers per hour.
But, the Olympics are not the only massive celebration. It’s also the Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee – three more years and she’ll be the longest serving British
monarch ever.
Celebrations across the UK lead up to June’s Diamond Jubilee weekend,
culminating in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant in Battersea Park on 3
June. Billed as one of the biggest events ever held in London, it’s expected
to attract up to a million spectators.
On the Thames Gloriana, an 88-foot rowbarge with 18 oarsmen, will lead a
massive fl otilla of at least 1000 boats and small ships. This fl otilla will take
90 minutes to pass and will be separated into ten sections by music barges
– the fi rst of them being a fl oating bell tower, whose peals will be answered
by church bells along the route. That alone will be worth being there for. Her
Majesty will travel on the Royal Barge, the Spirit of Chartwell.
Next Generation –
Inner City Country Club
leading the way in recreational health and fi tness
By Janice Burmaz
STEPPING INSIDE AUCKLAND’S NEWEST health and fi tness club will have you
thinking that you have arrived at a 5-star hotel lobby. Instead of fi nding a regular health
club, you will feel as if you have escaped to an inner-city country club. Next Generation
Health and Racquet Club is situated on the fringe of the Domain and downtown
Auckland. Extensive fi tness facilities are complimented by racquet, aqua, social and
relaxation areas that are welcoming and uniquely different to traditional health clubs in
New Zealand. From its original base in Adelaide, Australia, the Next Generation Group
now includes one club in Sydney, two clubs in Perth and opened its doors to Auckland
in September 2011.
This club will appeal to both individuals and families alike. Whether you are looking to
lose weight, tone up or increase your general fi tness, socialise or just have fun, everything
is possible here. Home to Auckland Tennis Club, the new facilities include international
class tennis courts and recently hosted the ASB Classic and Heineken Open. Everyone
can enjoy tennis lessons with a range of programmes catering for all ages and levels run
by a team of tennis professionals and a social player’s night on Wednesdays.
Newly appointed General Manager Kym Fell says that the club is family orientated,
offering unrivalled facilities and service levels to its members. “We have state-of-the-art
exercise machines, indoor and outdoor pools and a total of 72 group fi tness classes to
choose from each week.” In addition to this there is also a Peak Pilates studio offering
one-on-one physiotherapy and rehabilitation programmes.
The multilevel complex has purpose-built rooms that make it a suitable venue for
whatever type of function or event you are planning. All of the event spaces have
picturesque views over Centre Court and the leafy Domain with fl oor-to-ceiling windows
making the most of the views and the natural light. Boardrooms with balcony space can

e set up to cater for small groups of 10 to 250 people. The outdoor areas can host up
to 600 guests and can include the courts, rooftop skyline pool and deck.
Fell’s background in hotel management will make use of the venue’s unique function
spaces, which he says can operate in isolation to the main club area. It’s exciting
to be in a position to offer a new generation of daytime corporate health and team
building activities.” For the package ‘Fitness for Functions’, you can choose either
thirty minutes to an hour as a break out option with an exclusive fi tness class or health
seminar by one of the club’s qualifi ed personal trainers,
As well as fi tness packages Next Generation has its very own creative culinary team
headed by award-winning Chef Glen Rockhouse. The daytime ‘build your own café’
menu and banquet packages have all been designed exclusively by Rockhouse with
your best of health in mind. The in-house licensed café and lounges are kitted out
with free internet access and views across the tennis courts. There is a crèche, a
regeneration room with spa, steam and dry sauna.
Joining the club has benefi ts beyond any gym or recreational facility that you would
usually expect or experience anywhere in New Zealand. There are two levels of
membership available with or without tennis. Or you can upgrade to a Premium
membership which includes access to the regeneration spa, free towel and parking.
There’s an online Club Lounge portal to manage your timetable and book your exercise
classes – saving time and allowing you more time to enjoy all the club facilities. This is
a distinctly different health and fi tness club. Once you become a member you will not
lack motivation to exercise – you will want to come here on a regular basis.
Pullman Hotel Auckland
reaches new heights
74 nzcorporatetraveller ISSUE 21
AUCKLAND’S 5-STAR PULLMAN HOTEL has unveiled one of
New Zealand’s biggest and most expensive presidential penthouses
– said to be the best yet provided by the up and coming Pullman
brand which currently has sixty hotels worldwide.
The architect-designed Presidential Penthouse gives 286m 2 of
opulent living with a further 85m 2 of terraced balconies. It covers
two levels on the top fl oor of the hotel’s Residence Tower and comes
with a price tag of around $NZ10,000 a night.
Pullman Auckland general manager, Rob McIntyre, says the
penthouse responds to the experience throughout the Pullman
Group, of an increasing need for accommodation appropriate to
visiting international celebrities, musicians, the sporting elite, as well
as royal guests.
“Pullman hotels worldwide including Paris, Bangkok, Shanghai and
Sydney all include Presidential Suites. However, our penthouse will
surpass all of these in terms of quality and design aesthetic. No
expense is being spared,” he says.
The lower fl oor includes a kitchen, lounge and king-size bedroom
as well as expansive living space with a sweeping staircase to a
mezzanine level with more living spaces and two king suites with
opulent bathrooms.
“Both the lower and mezzanine fl oors are designed to take full
advantage of panoramic city and harbour views,” says McIntyre.
“Guests have unobstructed views of the entrance to the Hauraki
Gulf Island and Coromandel Peninsula to the east, as well as the
upper reaches of the Waitemata Harbour to the west”.
The penthouse is an ideal venue to host any corporate functions
Berkeley River:
Magnifi cence at the ends of the earth
76 nzcorporatetraveller ISSUE 21
THE BERKELEY RIVER, Australia’s newest luxury resort – and likely to remain one of its
most remote – is due to open in April.
The Berkeley River offers a true Outback experience – in air-conditioned luxury – some
150km NNW of Wyndham, and about as far north as you can go, on Western Australia’s
Kimberley Coast. You can’t drive there – there are no roads.
Set on the edge of a glorious landscape half as old as time, Berkeley River’s 20 airconditioned
chalets and central lodge (designed to complement the environment), look
out over the Timor Sea from atop a 100-metre sand dune.
The resort has indoor and outdoor dining – calling upon a well stocked cellar and a
seasonal 5-star menu that includes freshly caught fi sh and produce pulled straight from
the garden. Each chalet comes with a king bed, a balcony with day loungers, and an openair
shower and bath. This emphasis on the al fresco tells you about the climate but opens
the question of why would anyone shower when they have the option of lying back in the
bath, cocooned in the warmth of an Outback night, gazing up into a sky that is strewn
horizon to horizon with stars of almost impossible brilliance?
From this luxurious nest, the pampered visitor can take river cruises and wonder at the
wildlife; go heli-fi shing or explore in the comfort of the Bell 407 chopper – picnicking,
fi nding dramatic waterfalls, reliving history on the land or at the Kalumburu Museum,
being awed by 40,000-year-old rock paintings – maybe the oldest of all human art and an
eerie link to an unbelievably distant past.

Or guests may just kick-back on an empty tropical beach awaiting
the appearance of dolphins, mantas and/or sea turtles. Take
champagne and fruit to watch sunrise paint the sky. Take guided
treks in the hinterland. Swim in a local waterhole or crystal clear
waters – or use the resort’s 20-metre lap pool.
Above all, they can glory in a landscape hammered, sculpted
and painted by nature over millions of years, into an everlasting
majesty and drama.
Or do nothing.
The thing you can’t do is use your cellphone. And there’s no phone
in your room. Satellite phone connections can be arranged. If you
must go on the internet, you can do that in the library. Computers
are even provided. Swimming in the sea or river is discouraged
(except by the saltwater crocodiles, which are always there if not
always seen).
It’s monsoonal and so there are two seasons. The Wet and the
Dry. Neither is recommended ahead of the other but the Wet –
November to March – is when the waterfalls throw themselves
most dramatically and thunderously over their towering precipices.
Reaching Berkeley River is straightforward. You fl y to Kununurra (with
Qantas, Airnorth or Skywest) and transfer to the resort in a modern, four- or
eight-seat fl oatplane. Broome has the nearest international airport.
There is, however, a 10kg baggage restriction for the transfer fl ights and
the hosts provide a complimentary travel bag designed for the planes. Any
excess baggage can be safely stored at Kununurra. This limitation needn’t
be challenging; long cotton shirts and trousers should suffi ce year round,
along with pool-wear, maybe a light jacket, sandals, a broad brimmed hat
and something smart casual for the evening.
Something warm is recommended for the “cooler” months but who defi nes
“cool” isn’t specifi ed. As a guide, the average minimum temperature
hereabouts, through June, July and August, can be a “chilly” 15–16°C. The
average maximums at this time are a positively freezing plus 30°C.
Two-night packages are $2500 per person (on a twin-share basis). This
encompasses accommodation, all meals (but not alcohol), a personalised
itinerary of Berkeley experiences and adventures and the fl oat plane
transfers from Kununurra. Special package rates are available for stays of
OCEANIA CRUISES M/S REGATTA
AMAZING AMAZON
82 nzcorporatetraveller ISSUE 21
WE WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH to be leaving
New York just before the winter set in. Checking in
at the cruise terminal was effi cient and in no time
at all we were in our suite on Regatta – fl agship of
Oceania Cruises fl eet – awaiting a 27-day adventure
encompassing ten Caribbean ports and three on the
Amazon River.
The attraction of booking this cruise – apart from
the opportunity to explore deep into the Amazon –
was curiosity about how well Oceania Cruises has
managed to set itself apart from other cruise lines.
After 27 days I can report that they have succeeded,
with a satisfying experience combining in equal parts,
the pampered life aboard Regatta and the extremely
well-chosen itinerary.
Oceania Cruises caters more for the refi ned set,
achieving a remarkable blend of country club casual
– even down to dress code – and refi nement. You
won’t fi nd art auctions every second day but you will
fi nd a string quartet playing in the Upper Hall and a
pianist in Martinis.
Two sea days to the West Indies gave us time to
explore Regatta which, with just 684 passengers
on a ship of more than 30,000 tonnes, is spacious
and luxurious and we found, dedicated to our
comfort and service. The suite was distinguished
by lovely neoclassic furnishings, very fi ne linen and
every possible convenience including – last word in
opulence – a butler service.
It was also the opportunity to embark upon the
epicurean experience on which Oceania Cruises
pride themselves. We could have dined in style,
“en suite” but one should become part of the ship’s
life – no matter how luxurious the suite and even if
it has its own balcony (as 70% of Regatta’s suites
and staterooms do). We surrendered to the lure of
the four open seating, fi ne dining restaurants. Open
seating is defi nitely a boon as it offers choice and
variety to suit yourself at no extra cost.
Regatta is able to enter many ports of call – and
this adds an extra piquancy to the experience. For
example, we docked in the heart of Bermuda where
the sights and sounds and fragrances of the town

were all around us – houses painted in their green, pink and blue pastel colours
and a charming mix of old England and modern day. Two days in port gave us the
opportunity for extended sightseeing (although we eschewed the organised tours), in
Bermuda and Hamilton and lunching on Bermudian lobster.
Gustavia (St Barts) gave us a day in town and Sunday at the beach with white sands
and crystal clear waters and a balmy 31°C. At St Lucia, we reminded ourselves that
sampling local dishes is a traveller’s duty. Accordingly we chose to while away our day
with a long lunch of Pepper Pot Stew and Callaloo Soup.
Port of Spain in Trinidad, capital of Trinidad and Tobago, has been the centre of much
history. It’s hard, today, to equate this charming town of 50,000, with the deeds – both
dark and heroic – which helped shape so much of the history of both the Americas
and Europe.
Thus we came to the river port of Santarem in Brazil – the meeting of the waters – where
the blue waters of the Rio Tapajos fl ow side by side with the muddy brown Amazon.
First established as a Jesuit mission in 1661, Santarem today has a population of about
a quarter of a million inhabitants.
It is here our odyssey to Manaus, 900 miles inland on the bank of the Rio Negro,
begins. Manaus became extravagantly wealthy during the rubber boom from 1890–
1920. The inhabitants celebrated by building the lavish Teatro Amazonas opera house.
Fifteen years in the building and opened in 1897, this astonishingly beautiful theatre
was created from only the best of European materials, from Italian marble to Scottish
cast iron. The theatre was restored to its former glory in 1990.
After four unforgettable days in the Amazon we made our way to the infamous
former French prison, Devil’s Island, in French Guiana. Rocky and palm-covered and
for a century from 1852, hell on earth for many prisoners, Devil’s Island achieved
infamy in 1895 with the publicity surrounding French army captain Alfred Dreyfus,
wrongly convicted of treason. Its notoriety was revived in 1969 through Papillon, the
autobiographical story of the prisoner Henri Charrière.
Now with historical buildings restored, the island welcomes more than 50,000 tourists
each year.
Finally we made a leisurely return to Miami via Bridgetown Barbados, Fort de France
in Martinique, Spanish Town, British Virgin Islands and La Romana, Dominican
Republic. It was, quite simply, a magnifi cent cruise aboard Regatta and we’re doing
what you should do, checking our travel agents for Oceania Cruises’ latest specials.
