German-Canadian Business Association Christmas Dinner 2010

Not only has the Business
Association’s Christmas Dinner,
over the years, become a much
cherished event for the
German-speaking community in
Ottawa “on the road to
Christmas”. It has also become
an event where the Association
sits down for some reflection
and recollection and tries to
identify those individuals in the
community who through their
special efforts and commitment
have made living in this town,
with its often harsh climate,
more pleasant, more enjoyable,
and at least more bearable.
These are the people who have
done much needed volunteer
work. They are the kind of
reliable folks who, through their
personal initiative, have - often
quietly – contributed and helped

where it is most needed.
Working behind the scene, they
have indeed been building the
“road to Christmas”. The
German-Canadian Business
Association has become the
institution in the
German-speaking community
that keeps track of such efforts
and has at the Christmas
Dinner, on behalf of the
community, conveyed a big
“Dankeschön” by, firstly,
awarding them with the “Citizen
of the Year” plaque and,
secondly, providing them with a
Carmen and Thomas Kroeger, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Brune, Walter and Wilma Jonke, Joe Grossman.

This year consensus was
reached to add Pater (father)
Ernst Schoenhammer (OMI) to
the Citizens’ Role of Honour.
Undoubtedly, Pater
Schoenhammer already makes a
major contribution to the
German-speaking community,
both social and spiritual, by
being the Pastor of the German
St. Albertus Catholic Church.
However, it was felt that a
special recognition was now long
overdue for his continuing
outreach into the wider
German-Speaking community,
helping those less financially
fortunate, visiting those sick in
hospitals and care facilities or
living alone. Pater
Schoenhammer patiently listens
to these people in need and,
therefore, knows what is needed
most in the community. Such
needs are often hidden. And, he
makes sure they get it or, at
least, get the advice on where
and how to get it or who to
contact etc.
